Nissan To Launch Subscription Service – A Different Car Every Day – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Nissan Switch.

From series and film streaming to playing video games online to watching wrestling, to getting a variety of bacon delivered to your home every month – the future demands you have a subscription to something.
So why not a subscription to a car, or many cars?
“Changing up your ride is as easy as binge-watching your favourite show,” says Nissan.
On Wednesday the Japanese car manufacturer says that it would launch a subscription service that allows drivers to switch to a different car as often as every day, reports Business Insider.
“Nissan Switch”, the name of this new service, is scheduled to launch in the Houston area as a test run, says Nissan in a release. There are two tiers to the service, namely the “Select” and ‘Premium” tiers at $699 and $899 a month, respectively.
When choosing the Select tier, you will gain access to models like the Altima sedan and Rogue crossover. Premium is offering access to the Maxima sedan and the Armada SUV.
To join the program, subscribers will have to pay a fee of $495 on top of the first month of their chosen service. The subscription includes “unlimited switches as often as a new vehicle each day,” delivery, cleaning, insurance, roadside assistance, and regular maintenance.
Subscribers wishing to switch to a new car have only to use the Nissan Switch app or text your “personal concierge” to schedule your switch, according to the program’s website. The vehicle will then be delivered within an area pre-specified.
“Nissan Switch is another way that Nissan is testing alternatives to the notion of traditional mobility without long-term financial commitments for our customers,” Andrew Tavi, Nissan’s VP of external affairs, said.
“For those who want a sedan during the week and an SUV or sports car, like the GTR, on the weekends, Nissan Switch provides the solution.” With the GTR available for an extra $100 per day, for a maximum of seven days.
However, an analysis of the car marketplace by Edmunds, a car research and review company, says this new subscription will be much more expensive than traditional car leases over the course of three years.
Other manufacturers like Audi, Lexis and Mercedes-Benz are also currently working on plans for Netlfix-like subscription services in the future.

Nissan’s new vehicle subscription service lets you swap your car ‘every day’ – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Subscription services are all the rage these days. Platforms like Netflix, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, and countless others charge a monthly fee in exchange for ongoing access to their respective content libraries. However, this monetization model has use cases that extend beyond the digital world. In a press release published today, Nissan announced its first baggage-free car subscription service: “Nissan Switch.”
Nissan Switch is the carmaker’s attempt to bring “on-demand driving” to the public, allowing users to drive a wide variety of vehicles on a month-to-month basis with no long-term agreement or contract required. There are no loans to pay off, no leases to worry about, and no maintenance disasters to contend with.
“Nissan Switch is another way that Nissan is testing alternatives to the notion of traditional mobility, without long-term financial commitments for our customers,” Nissan executive Andrew Tavi said in a statement. “This program provides more choice, convenience, and flexibility. For those who want a sedan during the week and an SUV or sports car, like the GTR, on the weekends, Nissan Switch provides the solution.”

So, how does Switch work? If you’re in a supported region — just Houston, Texas for now — you sign up for Switch, download the app, select your use case (custom requests are possible) and vehicle model, and a “concierge” (employed by Clutch) will deliver a car to you within the “Select Service Area.” For now, the Select Service Area consists of the 20-mile radius around the South Main Neighborhood in Houston. You can see a full coverage map on the Nissan Switch website.
If you decide you don’t like the vehicle that was delivered to you, you can switch it out for another one at any time, with no limits. There’s no charge to do so, and your concierge will help you transfer luggage, groceries, or other objects from vehicle to vehicle.

Nissan’s Switch car line-up includes EVs, sedans, SUVs, trucks, and sports cars, and they all fall under one of two core subscription packages. Nissan Switch Select is $699, in addition to a one-time $495 “activation fee.” Select gives you access to the Nissan Altima, Rogue, Pathfinder, and Frontier.
Nissan Switch Premium is $899, and it includes the same set of vehicles, in addition to the Nissan Leaf, Maxima, Murano, Armada, Titan, and 370Z. The GT-R can be driven for an “additional $100 per day” (but no more than seven days at a time).

No matter how you look at it, even the base plan’s $700 (plus roughly $500 out of the gate) monthly fee is a lot of money for a lot of people. However, there are a few benefits to using the service. Aside from the convenience of being able to swap your car out at any time, Nissan throws in free roadside assistance, full detail washes, ongoing maintenance, and a “sustainable liability insurance policy” with no out-of-pocket deductibles for drivers.
Nissan is positioning Switch as an alternative to the standard lease-and-drive, or buy-and-pay-off car acquisition methods US citizens are used to. The company even has a chart that compares buying or leasing a vehicle to “renting” one with Switch (see that above).
At any rate, you can learn more about Switch on its official website. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the concept. If you had the money, would you take advantage of a “car subscription service” like this one, or would you prefer to stick to what you know? Tell us in the comments.

My smart car rental was a breeze – until I got trapped in the woods | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

On Saturday morning, I used an app on my phone to unlock a vehicle from Gig, a car sharing startup, and set off for a Valentine’s Day weekend trip to northern California with my partner.
By late Sunday afternoon, we were sitting on the side of a remote highway, a software issue on our smart car rendering it unusable. It was getting dark, we had no way of getting home, and I was contemplating the limits of the sharing economy and the ultimate costs of convenience.
Gig is a company that rents a fleet of hybrid Toyota Priuses and electric Chevrolet Bolts in the Bay Area and Sacramento to 65,000 users, according to a spokesman for the company. It is part of a growing field of car-sharing services – including Zipcar, the now-defunct Share Now, and recently Uber and Lyft – that allow users to rent standardized vehicles on the go. Other peer-to-peer car sharing companies such as Getaround and Turo allow users to rent their own cars to one another.
The services make it incredibly convenient to hit the road – no paperwork or trips to the rental company required – but come with their own costs, as I learned this weekend.
We had stopped the car for a quick hike down to the beach and when we returned found we could no longer use my phone to start the car. A customer service representative told us by phone the car’s software could not be remotely reset as it was out of cellular service range. It needed to be towed.
“Does this happen often?” I asked the representative, incredulously. “On that highway, yes,” she replied. I later discovered this particular stretch of US Highway 1 has no cell service for an approximately 40-mile radius.

Kari Paul (@kari_paul)
today in sharing economy struggles: our app powered car rental lost cell service on the side of a mountain in rural California and now I live here I guess pic.twitter.com/XoqqMpEwdN
February 17, 2020

According to an email from Gig sent that afternoon – which I did not receive until much later – to offer customers the “best experience”, cars are re-synced automatically every 24 hours; in other words, the car needs to update its connection to the cloud for security purposes. Without the ability to re-sync the car, customer service agents cannot remotely assist members, the company explained to me in a separate follow-up email.
However, the car cannot be re-synced easily if it is more than 50 miles outside of the “HomeZone”, out of cell range, or if the vehicle is moving.
A software engineer with experience in the field told me this was common with such technology: the longer the car goes without an update, the more vulnerable it becomes to security issues.
“It works great if you have a dependable cell connection,” the engineer, who asked to be quoted anonymously because he works at a company similar to Gig, said.

So we waited, and waited. I had enough cell service to send futile tweets about the saga but not to extricate myself from it. Eventually, Gig had us towed back to our Airbnb, where our wifi was useless in restarting the vehicle, which needed to be synced through the cellular network.
We pleaded with Gig employees to send us a second tow truck and then pleaded with them to reset the car after they told us we had already reset it the maximum number of times that day. We had to explain to numerous American Automobile Association (AAA) representatives and one rural tow truck driver what a connected smart car is.

Kari Paul (@kari_paul)
six hours, two tow trucks, and 20 calls to customer service later apparently it was a software issue and the car needed to be rebooted before we could use it @internetofshit pic.twitter.com/LZBZQwRJk8
February 17, 2020

Finally, five hours, two tow trucks, and more than 20 phone calls to Gig’s customer service line later, we got the car to start again. “Can I give you one more piece of advice?” the customer service representative said to us after the car finally turned back on. “Get the hell out of there – now.”
Driving a smart car into rural California seems, in retrospect, ill-advised. But others have told me they experienced similar issues, even within the city limits of Oakland and San Francisco.
Kate Wolffe, a reporter at KQED, said she had been stranded a few weeks ago at Redwood regional park in Oakland and walked for an hour and a half to get a Lyft after abandoning the car. One Twitter user told me she and her friends got stranded in Muir Woods – about 16 miles outside of San Francisco – and pushed the car, in neutral, to an area with cell service. When that didn’t work, they abandoned the car and had Gig retrieve it later.
This time last year, a Reddit poster shared a an experience similar to mine, in which his car stopped working when it lost cell service on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. In September 2019, the Atlantic’s Annie Lowrey wrote about getting stranded by Zipcar in a similar fashion.
In the aftermath of the saga, a customer service representative from Gig alerted me that users can order a radio frequency identification (RFID) card to lock or unlock the car in areas of poor cell service. Buried in the company’s website it suggests users order one, which takes two weeks to ship, before they “roam far” outside San Francisco. In the more than 40 times I have used Gig car since August 2019, I had never heard of the RFID card, and that precaution appears pages below the company’s promises to let users “sign up instantly” and “get going”.
A spokesman from AAA, which is the parent company of Gig, apologized by email for the experience.
“We are committed to improving our service and customer care, and will assess this situation for learnings,” a spokesman, Sergio Avila, said. “One immediate action is to improve communication to our Members about the important role that Gig Cards play in helping start a vehicle no matter where or when they need to use them before a trip even begins, so they are not dependent on cell service or Bluetooth alone. Our review of this Member experience is ongoing, and we will continue to identify ways to improve.”
“Our goal is to always have Members reach their destinations and we did not meet that expectation during your trip,” he said.
Ultimately, I was refunded for the trip and given an $85 credit for my troubles; I’m also being sent a Gig Card for long trips in the future. And when I walked outside this morning, the car I had gone through hours of trouble with was gone – someone else had checked it out and taken it on its way.

‘Taking one for the team’ to debut first driverless car in aged care sector – Projects- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Autonomous vehicles have long been touted as an opportunity to increase mobility and accessibility among the elderly, but so far IRT Group is the only aged care provider to make it a reality.
The project kicked off at its Kangara Waters lifestyle village in Canberra where IRT essentially had to build everything – including the government approval processes – from scratch.
Executive general manager of IT, John Vohradsky, said the opportunity to deploy a driverless shuttle was identified through the organisation’s “push-pull” IT strategy of meeting the pull of IRT’s needs across its business streams while continuously identifying opportunities to push new technologies.
“We were looking to push the new driverless technology to see how we could meet three main challenges pulling on the organisation, like the isolation the elderly can feel when their family and friends move away or people they know pass away,” he told iTnews.
That issue can be compounded by mobility issues resulting from either an injury or the loss of a driver’s license, both of which can greatly impact on seniors’ independence and their ability to connect to vital community services.
“Before introducing the shuttle, some of these people hadn’t left their units in months.
“The only people they’d have contact with would be IRT staff,” Vohradsky said.
However, IRT knew from the outset that the initiative would be a loss-leading exercise.
“You can’t just go down to the corner store and buy a driverless shuttle. These things aren’t cheap to buy or rent, and there isn’t anywhere you can buy them in Wollongong or Sydney.
“And you can’t just put one on the road and have it go. You need to do tests and deal with the fact that every road rule in Australia assumes a human driver is behind the wheel.
“We decided to take one for the team because we were confident this solution would benefit our residents, but also the wider industry.”
Part of that involved working with the ACT government to develop an approval process, which essentially turned IRT’s submission into a template for future work. Even still, the project had to receive ministerial approval and a signature from the police commissioner.
Vohratsky also had to contend with a very conservative user base who weren’t thrilled with the reports fatal car crashes connected to Tesla Autopilot, electric vehicle fires or Uber’s fatal collision with a pedestrian.IRT worked with French autonomous vehicle manufacturer Easymile to modify the standard operating software to make it safer for seniors and fit for the Kangara Waters Lifestyle Village’s mixed-use roads.
While IRT had initially thought of using an ad hoc, Uber-style offering, a routine shuttle bus on a closed loop proved to be easier to set up and more effective.
Residents who hadn’t left their units for months became unexpected regulars at the local coffee shop, and staff who were concerned about the disruption found it easy to modify their schedules.
Vohradsky said the positive outcomes showed how this kind of innovation could become “the new normal” in an industry often regarded as being at the back end of the tech adoption bell curve.

Hacker creates new device that can unlock any luxury car- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

A hacker named “EvanConnect” has developed a device which helps users break into any luxury car that uses a wireless key fob system. He named the device “keyless repeater” which he sells for $9,000 and demonstrated that how it works in a video which he released recently.
The video shows him approaching an unattended car which belongs to his friend who gave him permission to use it and using the small handheld device with an antenna to unlock the driver’s side door of the car and start the engine, dailymail.co.uk reported.
In the video, he admits there is no guarantee as to how his customers might use the device.
He said in an interview that his device works on all luxury cars except for those that use frequencies between 22 and 40 khz, such as Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Rolls Royce models released after 2014.
Additionally, he also mentioned about the upgraded version of the same for $12,000 which can unlock any car that uses a wireless fob system.
“Honestly I can tell you that I have not stolen a car with technology, it is very easy to do, but the way I see it, why would I get my hands dirty when I can make money just selling the tools to other people,” he said.
Samy Kamkar, a security expert Vice after reviewing EvanConnect’s footage, said the keyless repeater technology is commonly known in the field.
“I ca not validate that the video is legitimate but I can say that it is 100 per cent reasonable (I have personally performed the same attack on more than a dozen vehicles with hardware I’ve built and very easy to demonstrate),” the report quoted Kamkar.

Tesla restores autopilot features it remotely disabled in second-hand car – Blog – 10 minute

A hot potato: Never underestimate the power of bad publicity. After Tesla removed driver assistance features from a second-hand Model S 75D following its purchase from a dealer, the company has restored the Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self Driving, blaming the incident on a “miscommunication.”
Last week brought news of an anonymous consumer who bought a 2017 Tesla on December 20 last year from a third-party dealer. Sold at auction, the car was listed with the driver assistance features, which cost around $8,000 when adding them to a new vehicle.
What the buyer didn’t know was that three days after Tesla sold the car to the dealer, it performed a remote audit and flagged the features for removal. It was only after the car was sold that Tesla pushed out a software update that disabled them. When the buyer contacted Tesla, they were told the car was “incorrectly configured for Autopilot versions that they did not pay for.” The company even offered to re-add the features for a price.
While there have been reports of similar incidents in the past, Tesla dealers insist that features wouldn’t be removed if they were listed as part of a second-hand car’s specs. Now, the buyer in this case has had them reinstated.

Writing on Tesla Motors Club forum (spotted by TNW), the buyer said they were contacted by a Tesla rep who “apologized for my troubles, told me that Tesla has restored all missed options.” The reason the features were disabled? A miscommunication, apparently.
While this case was resolved, other people who don’t get any media exposure could be experiencing the same problem. Hopefully, Tesla will learn from this incident.

Fiat Chrysler partners with self-driving car startup AutoX to bring a robo-taxi service to China by Q3 2020 – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: As the novel coronavirus continues to spread throughout China, some foreign companies are limiting their operations in the country. Even many Chinese businesses closed down temporarily in response to the virus. However, not every company is slowing down its operations in the Asian country. Fiat Chrysler has just revealed plans to roll out a robot taxi service in China later this year.
That’s a surprisingly quick timeline given the regulatory hurdles that will come with such an ambitious move, but Fiat Chrysler won’t be going it alone. The Detroit automaker will have some local expertise thanks to their new partnership with Chinese self-driving vehicle startup AutoX.
AutoX was started back in 2016 by Jianxiong Xiao, and his team is composed of engineers from top universities like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and UC Berkeley. AutoX’s claim to fame is its “game-changing” autonomous vehicle technology, which combines real-time camera vision, sensors, AI software, and “multi-sensory inputs” to help vehicles drive safely and efficiently. It sounds like pretty standard stuff for this industry, but perhaps AutoX has a few unique tricks up its sleeve.

AutoX’s goal will be to “enable” Fiat Chrysler by implementing its “AutoX AI Driver” technology into its partner’s Pacifica minivans (the same vehicles Waymo uses for its own robo-taxi service). These minivans, which will be called “AutoX Pacifica RoboTaxis,” will hit the streets of Shenzhen and Shanghai, carting citizens around for a fee.
The vehicles have been tested in the US already, but China’s major cities will present plenty of new challenges for AutoX’s AI to overcome. Nonetheless, the company seems confident that it (and Fiat Chrysler) can deploy the first RoboTaxis as early as the first half of 2020.

Nuro’s R2 vehicle has been granted the NHTSA’s first regulatory exemption for a custom self-driving car – Blog – 10 minute

Self-driving cars: Nuro is a well-known entity in the autonomous vehicle industry. It’s partnered up with companies like Kroger and Dominos in the past to offer driverless food and grocery delivery services via its “R1” generation of vehicles. Now, Nuro has unveiled its R2 vehicle model, designed from the ground up to be safer and more accommodating to other drivers on the road.
The Nuro R2 features several improvements over its predecessor, including a more durable body designed to help the vehicle handle “inclement weather,” updated sensors, more storage space, better internal temperature control, and a few other important changes that we’ll get to in a moment.
First, a quick note about a key difference in the way the vehicles are being produced — instead of handling design and development in-house, Nuro is partnering up with Roush, a “full-service” product development supplier. Roush’s primary goal is to help Nuro produce the R2 at scale, using their own assembly expertise.

Returning to the other tweaks mentioned earlier, the Nuro R2 houses multiple “safety innovations” that wouldn’t have been possible without some help from the NHTSA. The organization, which aids in the regulation of the self-driving car industry, granted Nuro a US-first “regulatory exemption” for the vehicle.
This exemption allows the R2 to operate without some of the normal requirements attached to traditional vehicles. For example, thanks to the NHTSA’s decision, the R2 does not have (or need) a windshield, nor does it house any side mirrors. Further, its rear camera can stay enabled at all times, even when the vehicle is moving forward.

Typically, the NHTSA requires rear cameras to be shut off when a vehicle isn’t backing up, to prevent its human driver from becoming distracted. Since the R2 does not have a human driver and thus cannot be distracted, there’s no need for that rule to apply here.
Obviously, Nuro is pleased that it was able to obtain these exemptions, but the company recognizes that it’s not an ideal way to solve the problem. The transportation industry as a whole is changing, and Nuro hopes that core regulations will adapt outright, instead of simply bending to accommodate the occasional innovative vehicle.

iPhones and Apple Watches could soon replace your car keys – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Smartphones can perform a multitude of functions, and they might soon be able to unlock, lock, and even start a vehicle. The feature, which has been discovered in the beta version of iOS 13.4 for developers, allows iPhone and Apple Watch owners to use the devices as car keys with NFC-compatible vehicles.
9to5Mac discovered references to a “CarKey” API in the beta of iOS 13.4. According to the files, users will only need to hold their iPhone/Apple Watch near a vehicle to use it like a key.
It was also discovered that the feature would exist within the wallet app, and, as is the case with Express Transit Cards, it doesn’t require Face ID after the initial pairing; this means that CarKey will work even with an iPhone or Apple Watch that’s out of battery power.

No more wondering where you left your car keys
Those interested in using the feature will require an NFC-compatible car, of course, and will need the vehicle manufacturer’s app installed. Users have to place their iPhone on top of the car’s NFC reader during the initial setup, and CarKey will appear in the wallet app. It can then be added to the Apple Watch.
Another aspect of CarKey is that it can be shared with friends and family members. Users can invite them via the wallet app, at which point they’ll see a message reading: “%@ invited you to use their %@ with unlock access. This allows you to use your iPhone and Apple Watch to unlock/lock the car.”
It’s believed that Apple is already working with some car manufacturers to implement CarKey, but there’s been no official announcement from the company about the feature yet. Assuming everything goes to plan, expect to see it once iOS 13.4 officially arrives.

Jaguar develops a shape-shifting car seat that simulates walking – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: It’s no secret that our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, largely occupied by hours spent sitting in front of a computer screen and commuting through traffic jams for work, pose several risks to our physical and mental health. The World Health Organization estimates over 1.4 billion adults are at risk from a lack of physical activity, which can lead to diseases like dementia and type 2 diabetes, obesity, weak pelvic and back muscles, as well as heart problems. To address this issue, British automaker, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is exploring the idea of using shape-shifting car seats that move your body muscles to simulate walking.
Cars have had massaging seats for a while now, but researchers at Jaguar Land Rover have come up with a new prototype seat technology that “makes you think you’re walking.”
JLR calls it the ‘morphable’ seat, currently being experimented in the company’s Body Interiors and Research division. It uses a series of micro-adjustable actuators placed in the seat foam to activate the pelvic area, making occupants feel like they’re walking, even though they might actually be stuck in a traffic jam or munching miles on the motorway.

A future model of this 2021 F-Type might one day be offered with Jaguar’s ‘Morphable’ seat
These pelvic oscillations, says Jaguar, can also be tailored to suit individual passenger and driver needs. “The wellbeing of our customers and employees is at the heart of all our technological research projects,” said JLR’s chief medical officer, Dr. Steve Iley, adding that the company is using its engineering expertise to develop innovative technologies, like the morphable seat, for tackling an issue that affects people “across the globe.”
It remains to be seen if a shape-shifting car seat could interfere with the brake, clutch or accelerator pedal since the leg movement seems to be more pronounced. However, future advancements in autonomous driving technology may get rid of the argument altogether by negating the need for any pedals in the footwell.

Given that the morphable seat is still in its research phase, those concerned with improving their posture behind the wheel right now can take a look at the company’s video guide above to help them find the “perfect driving position.”
