It was on this day in 1980 that one of gaming’s most iconic characters made his debut. To celebrate, here are 40 facts about the ravenous yellow circle and his proud, pill-popping legacy …
1. Pac-Man was created by game designer Toru Iwatani – he was just 24 at the time. The idea for the character came to him when he removed a slice from a pizza.
2. He was also partly inspired by the onomatopoeic phrase paku paku meaning “chomp chomp” and the kanji symbol for the word taberu meaning “to eat”.
3. In 2010, Iwatani told Wired that Pac-Man particularly targeted female players. “When you think about things women like, you think about fashion, or fortune-telling, or food or dating boyfriends. So I decided to theme the game around ‘eating’.” There is absolutely nothing problematic about this statement …
4. To make the game more kawaii (“cute”), Iwatani designed the ghosts in bright colours and gave them large doe-eyes.
5. The ghosts are called Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde and they each have their own personalities based on AI routines. Blinky constantly chases Pac-Man, Pinky attempts to ambush him, Inky is randomised depending on Pac-Man’s position and Clyde will get close to the player then attempt to flee to the bottom left corner, potentially cutting off escape routes.

6. The idea of eating a power pill to give Pac-Man super strength came partly from the cartoon Popeye and his love of spinach, and partly from the Japanese concept of kokoro (“spirit”) or life force. It’s considered one of the first examples of a “power up” in video game history.
7. Pac-Man manufacturer Namco installed the first machine in a movie theatre in Shibuya, Tokyo, on 22 May 1980.
8. The game was only a moderate success until its blockbusting US launch the following October.
9. It was originally called Puck Man, but the US distributor Midway was worried that the word Puck could easily be modified by mischievous vandals into something ruder. Hence, Pac-Man.
10. The game features short animated sequences between levels, showing Pac-Man being chased by the ghosts. This was one of the first examples of a non-interactive video game “cutscene”.
11. Martin Amis was a fan of the game and in his 1982 book Invasion of the Space Invaders claimed to have spent weeks in “a Pac-Man-fed stupor […] unwilling and unable to think about anything else”.
12. Within a year of Pac-Man’s launch, 100,000 units had been sold and 250m games were being played every week. Pac-Man became gaming’s first marketable mascot, with licensed merchandise including lunchboxes, joke books, T-shirts, board games, pyjamas and, for the romantic gamer, Valentine cards.

13. A strategy guide to the game, Mastering Pac-Man by professional blackjack player Ken Uston, sold more than 1m copies.
14. With its simplified maze and blocky visuals, the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man is widely considered one of the worst arcade-to-home console conversions of all time. Although it sold 7m copies, the game was so wretched it has been widely blamed for the 1983 video game crash, alongside the similarly poor title, ET.
15. Japanese toy manufacturer Tomy made a famously beautiful, handheld Pac-Man game in the shape of an enormous yellow blob with an LCD display. This advert for the device is quite a rush.
16. The tribute song Pac-Man Fever by artists Jerry Buckner and Gary Garcia reached number nine in the US charts in March 1982. An album of video-game-inspired songs followed. It was not good.
17. The game’s distinctive electronic music and sound effects were also an inspiration to early hip-hop pioneers. Notable examples include Jonzun Crew’s Pack Jam and Newcleus’s Jam on Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song).
18. The game gave us this Marcus Brigstocke joke: “If Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.”
19. In 1981, Japanese manufacturer Shoei released a terrible “erotic” version of Pac-Man called Streaking. It was later heavily featured in the movie Joysticks, which belonged to the 1980s teen sex comedy genre popularised by Porky’s. Here is the movie trailer. Please don’t watch it.
20. The movie also featured preview footage of Super Pac-Man, Namco’s official sequel to the original game.
21. In a 1982 episode of the sitcom Taxi, Louie (Danny DeVito) installs a Pac-Man cabinet in the garage and Jim (Christopher Lloyd) becomes addicted to the game. The scene is effectively a how-to guide and an advert for Pac-Man rolled into one.

22. Pac-Man was a major element in the appalling Adam Sandler comedy Pixels, with Toru Iwatani getting a cameo as an arcade repairman. But let’s just forget about that, shall we?
23. In 1999, Billy Mitchell became the first person to obtain a perfect Pac-Man score of 3,333,360, eating every dot, power pill, ghost and bonus on every level without losing a single life. However, Mitchell was later accused of cheating by video game records supervisor Twin Galaxies. The record was equalled by David Race in 2012.
24. It is impossible to score higher than that because of a bug in the game that turns the screen to gibberish on the 256th screen.
25. The success of Pac-Man inspired US distributor Bally Midway to create a series of mostly identical sequels: Ms Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Jr Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man (which added a mini pinball table under the monitor) and Professor Pac-Man.
26. Professor Pac-Man was a quiz game depicting Pac-Man in a mortar board and glasses. It was not a success.
27. In 1982, Hanna-Barbera produced a Pac-Man cartoon series. It features Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man, their child Pac-Baby and their cat Sour Puss as they attempt to elude the evil Mezmaron who is obsessed with power pills. The intro sequence is a work of hallucinogenic brilliance.
28. In his book Trigger Happy, writer Steven Poole suggested Pac-Man was a precursor to survivor horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill due to its confined, maze-like map, supernatural enemies and emphasis on evasion.
29. In corporate parlance, “the Pac-Man defence” is a strategy in which a company targeted for a hostile takeover attempts to turn the tables and purchase the acquirer.
30. Ms Pac-Man is widely considered a better game than Pac-Man, due to the more varied maze design and improved ghost AI.
31. However, it is most remembered for the image on the side of the game cabinet, which depicts Ms Pac-Man with high heels, red lipstick and fluttering eyelashes, making her the decade’s most bizarre and confusing sex symbol. And, bearing in mind we’re talking about the 80s, that’s really saying something.

32. In the Friends episode The One Where Joey Dates Rachel, Phoebe gives Chandler and Monica a pristine Ms Pac-Man cabinet as a late wedding present – a generous gift as it would have cost about $2,500.
33. Namco has regularly attempted to update and expand the Pac-Man concept. Sometimes this has worked (scrolling platformers Pac-Land and Pac in Time, and the isometrically viewed Pac-Mania); sometimes it really hasn’t (risible party game Pac-Man Fever and mystifying off-road driving sim Pac-Man World Rally).
34. Pac-Man has also appeared as a playable guest character in many other games, including Everybody’s Golf, Mario Kart Arcade GP and Street Fighter X Tekken. He stars as the world’s cutest racing car in Ridge Racer Type 4.
35. Swiss tech company ClearSpace is developing a satellite capable of orbiting Earth and gobbling up space junk. The project leader nicknamed it “the Pac-Man system”.
36. In 2004, New York University students created a real-world version of Pac-Man entitled Pac-Manhattan, in which a player dressed as Pac-Man had to run around the city avoiding students dressed as ghosts. The game used mobile phone GPS signals to track their positions.
37. French street artist Invader has created several mosaic works featuring the Pac-Man character and ghosts, notably in Paris and Bilbao.
38. For his spring/summer 2009 collection, fashion designer Giles Deacon dressed the models in gigantic Pac-Man helmets and had dots painted along the runway.
39. In 2012, Pac-Man was one of 14 video games brought into the collection at MoMA in New York and displayed in its architecture and design gallery.

The main thing that you have to remember on this journey is just be nice to everyone and always smile. Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture.

I’m not sure if it was the sheer size of the place, or whether the masses congregated in one area and didn’t venture far from the main church, but I didn’t feel overwhelmed by tourists in the monastery.

We were exhausted after a long day of travel, so we headed back to the hotel and crashed. I had low expectations about Sofia as a city, but after the walking tour I absolutely loved the place. This was an easy city to navigate, and it was a beautiful city – despite its ugly, staunch and stolid communist-built surrounds. Sofia has a very average facade as you enter the city, but once you lose yourself in the old town area, everything changes.

CTI Digital celebrates Alton Towers’ 40th birthday with Model My Map campaign- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Alton Towers Resort and CTI Digital have launched an interactive content feature to kickstart celebrations for Alton Towers’ 40th anniversary.
The first activation of the 2020 campaign series will be an interactive quiz, Model My Map, which will invite users to design their ideal theme park. Users can choose thrill rides and activities from the past, present and potential future of Alton Towers, to reveal a personalised illustrated map.
During the launch week, more than 3,200 people engaged with the feature, marking a 95% completion rate.
The campaign arises from close collaboration between the digital marketing team at CTI and Alton Towers’ marketing, PR, social media and design teams. The interactive map feature arrives in tandem with Alton Towers’ “through the ages” video timeline (below), created by LMC.

Collaborating with interactive experience partners, Apester, CTI oversaw the idea from conception to fruition. The project was fast-paced and agile approach – providing Alton Towers with the ability to commission regular content campaigns throughout the year.
James Wilkinson, director of marketing at CTI Digital, says: “We are really excited to be involved with Alton Towers’ 40th birthday and impressed with the line-up of events for the year ahead. Leap Day babies are a birthday conundrum. When a birthday only comes once every four years, it’s difficult to know when to celebrate. Aviation Gin is playing with that concept in a Leap Day celebration for an 84-year-old’s 21st birthday.
If that sounds confusing, know that Aviation Gin owner Ryan Reynolds and his wry humor is behind this effort. Reynolds doesn’t appear in the ad this time, except for his voice over, which describes the paradox of Arlene Manko’s birthday on 29 February 1936. That means this year is her official 21st birthday, even though her age is decades older. To celebrate, Ryan Reynolds and Aviation wanted to make sure her first legal drink was Aviation Gin.
The story shows Arlene in her home as Reynolds describes her unusual anniversary. “I was technically five years old when I got married,” says Manko in the spot, holding up a laminated picture of her newspaper marriage announcement. She says she has waited 30,679 days for her first legal drink. “I had seven kids in ten years, you think sometimes I didn’t want to drink?”
She claims she followed the rules because you don’t get in trouble when you do what you’re told, though she claims she’s no angel, as she’s seen going into a convenience store and showing her ID, dressed in various disguises. Then she claims she’s ready to party.
So, Manko waited 84 years and Aviation Gin found her and chronicled her first legal drink – a tall glass of gin with soda water and an orange. After a long sip, she exclaims “Holy Moses!”
At the end, she says she had never heard of Ryan Reynolds, to which Reynolds replies in the voice over, “Ignore her, she’s been drinking.”
While the ad doesn’t have the cheeky immediacy of some of Reynolds’ other Aviation efforts, it’s fun, quirky, and highlights an event previously sung about in Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, The Pirates of Penzance in the song A Paradox, where a shocked Frederic sings, “I am a little boy of five.”

Adobe Photoshop gets new features for the desktop and iPad on its 30th birthday – Blog – 10 minute

In a nutshell: As is usually the case with birthdays, Photoshop also put on some weight after turning 30, albeit in the shape of several new feature updates and performance improvements across its desktop and iPad apps.
Photoshop, a byword for image editing and manipulation, crossed its 30th birthday recently. Although the software has faced stiff competition from several paid and free programs over the years, it continues to be one of the most feature-rich and complete products on the market today.
Adobe celebrated the milestone with a blog post announcing several new features for desktop and iPad users of Photoshop, starting with an enhanced Content-Aware Fill (CAF) workspace on PCs that allows for iteratively selecting and filling multiple areas of an image without having to leave the workspace window.
The next major feature for desktops is an improved Lens Blur filter that now uses the GPU to achieve a more realistic bokeh look for images. The updated algorithm is also able to generate blurrier edges on objects in front of the focal plane and can provide more colorful specular highlights in photos.

Users running macOS Catalina can now soothe their eyes with a dark mode for Photoshop that should blend nicely with the rest of the OS. There’s also a few under the hood changes to make the UI more responsive to mouse and stylus movements with smoother panning, dragging, and zooming. For those on Windows, the latest Photoshop update removes the need for WinTab drivers, mostly used by artists for supporting styluses or digitizer tablets.

Photoshop’s iPad app continues to catch up with the desktop version and receives the latter’s Object Selection tool for quickly selecting and isolating items of interest in an image. There are also new type settings, including layer, character, and options properties that enable text tracking, leading, scaling and formatting (caps, strikethrough, subscript, etc.) with kerning to arrive in a future release.

Adobe’s launch of Photoshop for iPad wasn’t well-received initially due to a lack of features, but the company has put out multiple releases in a span of three months to close the gap with its desktop counterpart and is shipping new capabilities “as soon as the user experience has been adapted to the iPad and reimagined to take advantage of touch and mobility.”
These latest updates should also help with improving file uploading and downloading speeds over the cloud, which Adobe says could end up being up to 90% faster, depending on file size and network performance.

Happy birthday! Google Maps revolutionized navigation 15 years ago – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: Google this week is celebrating the 15th anniversary of one of its biggest undertakings ever – mapping the entire world. It’ wild to think that not all that long ago, we were still using paper maps to get from point A to B. My, how time flies!
The search giant announced Google Maps on its official blog way back on February 8, 2005. At the time, product manager Bret Taylor suggested looking for “hotels near LAX” with Maps or clicking and dragging the map to “view the adjacent area dynamically” with no waiting for new images to download.
The Internet was still instrumental in providing directions before smartphones were ubiquitous, just in a different way. Back then, it wasn’t uncommon to use an online service like MapQuest to map out your route ahead of time, complete with turn-by-turn directions, and print them out to take along with you.
Of course, these directions were static so if you veered off course, your printed route didn’t update itself like today’s digital maps do.

Before the Internet, it was even more archaic, as you had to reply on paper maps or an atlas that was often outdated. There were no turn-by-turn directions, either; you actually had to know how to read a map and get yourself to your destination on your own. Oh, the horror!
These days, Google Maps is the most popular navigation app in the US by a wide margin. Competitors like Apple Maps and Waze have obtained some market share but Google is by far the leader. Heck, I can’t even think of the last time I saw a printed travel map for sale in a gas station but they are apparently still in print.

Recap: Apple’s tablet wasn’t a surprise when Jobs took the wraps off it during a press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on January 27, 2010. Pundits speculated that Apple’s tablet may be called the iSlate or perhaps the iTablet but Cupertino ultimately went with iPad.
It’s been 10 years to the day since Steve Jobs officially introduced the term “iPad” into the English lexicon.
The company probably could have spared itself some early embarrassment by going with one of the other leading names as the term iPad sparked all sorts of jokes related to feminine products.
Despite arriving nearly three years after the iPhone, development on the iPad actually started before the handset. While tinkering with an early version of a multi-touch display, Jobs realized that they could build a phone with it. As such, development of the tablet was put on the backburner so Apple could focus on what would eventually become the iPhone.

The first couple of iPads experienced the type of growing pains you’d expect from a new category but over the years, the form factor came into its own as designs were refined and compatibility expanded.
The iPad helped spawn a whole new category of device in the tablet which soared in popularity before cooling in recent years. The iPad is now experiencing a bit of a renaissance as a professional device and likely has many more solid years ahead of it.
