Dropbox Launches New Password Manager in Private Beta | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from TechSpot.

Dropbox has quietly launched a new password manager named Dropbox Passwords.
The app is only available in a private beta on Android, and although it can be downloaded, users won’t be able to use it yet – at least not until they get an invite.
The app’s Play Store listing notes that the app is currently “in development” and therefore may be unstable.
Sourced from Dropbox.
While still currently in a very basic state, like most password managers, it creates unique passwords, stores them in a single place and synchronises them across your devices in order to automatically and quickly fill-in login fields.

There’s still no mention of other useful features like importing passwords from browsers and support for two-factor authentication. The app is also advertising it calls “Zero-Knowledge Encryption,” which means only the respective users have access to the data being stored in the app.
Zero-Knowledge Encryption is a common feature, according to The Verge, password managers like Dashlane, LastPass, 1Password all offer the same feature and protocol.
The app was first spotted by AndroidPolice, who points out that as Dropbox Passwords offers the ability to sign in to apps and websites with “one-click,” it likely means the software is using Android’s autofill feature, introduced in 2017 with Android Oreo.
The Verge writes that it makes sense for Dropbox to enter the password manager market, considering that many existing passwords already use Dropbox as a cloud option to sync data between devices.
Password Managers
Password managers remove both of these problems by generating and storing complex passwords for users.
The password manager lives in your browser and acts as a digital gatekeeper, filling in your login info when you need to get on a certain site. Most browsers have in-built managers, though many companies offer more security features for the passwords of users.
For example, LastPass features two-factor authentication.
A highly competitive field, most password managers offer similar features, and it is usually up to feature implementation in how a user can choose it.

WhatsApp’s Beta Version For iPhone Add New Context Menu- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article
Over the days, WhatsApp has been working on improving the functionality and has been adding features to the beta version of its app. As per a report, WhatsApp has released a new update of WhatsApp beta for iPhone that adds a new context menu in chats.
However, this context menu was being seen previously in one of the older versions, but that was removed by WhatsApp for unknown reasons. This is by far the largest beta update that brings it back with added ‘info’ option. Also, the Share sheet integration has been removed with the new update.
WhatsApp’s latest beta update comes with version number 2.20.50.21, according to WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo. Also, it brings a new context menu with added option for ‘Info’. There would be a pop up when one long presses the app on chat, where it earlier included ‘Star’, ‘Reply’, ‘Forward’, ‘Copy’ and ‘Delete’ options, now it additionally gets the ‘Info’ option too.

Also, this new context menu option was part of an older update too, but that was removed by WhatsApp for unknown reasons. This context menu is visible in both individual and group chats on WhatsApp beta 2.20.50.21 for iPhone.
Talking about the share sheet integration, this feature has been temporarily removed as was stated in the report. It (the feature) was brought in the previous 2.20.40 update, however, now has been removed since there was an issue that caused the screen to crash. When one tries to share a file with someone, the share sheet is the menu that pops up while sharing a file with someone. When this feature was present, this showed Whatsapp contact suggestions in the Share Sheet itself.

Gmail debuted in 2004 as an invitation-only beta offering how much free storage? Trivia – Blog – 10 minute

Development on Gmail began in 2001 by Googler Paul Buchheit, who dabbled in webmail as a college student prior to the existence of Hotmail. Released to the public on April Fool’s Day, 2004, the service was initially mistaken as a joke, not least because it launched with a whole gigabyte of storage, which was over 100 times what you would get for free from Hotmail or Yahoo.
The catch at the time was that you could only get in with an invite, which promptly flooded eBay and commanded a premium of more than $100 at one point.
Gmail remained in beta until 2009 when it exited the pre-release phase alongside Google Docs, Calendar and Talk. Today, Gmail provides 15GB of storage to more than a billion users.

Apple namedrops next-gen AMD hardware in macOS beta code – Blog – 10 minute

Through the looking glass: AMD delivered a splendid battery of processors and graphics hardware throughout 2019 and seemingly Apple’s been taking notice. Last year the pair delivered the Mac Pro’s unique Vega II Pro Duo graphics solution, and new evidence suggests that may be the first in a succession of high-end AMD products to grace Apple’s testing labs.
Unreleased and unannounced AMD products and supporting infrastructure are appearing frequently in newly published, official MacOS Catalina 10.15.4 code. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen some of these products in a beta version of macOS, but they’re looking increasingly polished this iteration.
Most notably, the code extensively references AMD’s Navi 12, Navi 21, Navi 22, and Navi 23 graphics cards that are expected to break new ground in the gaming GPU world. The four models have been confirmed multiple times by Linux updates, and they’re expected to utilize RDNA 2.0 and AMD’s first hardware ray tracing implementation.
Rumors suggest that Navi 12 and 21 are budget and mid-range chips, while Navi 22 and 23 are the flagship parts that could challenge Nvidia’s RTX series and potentially dethrone the RTX 2080 Ti.
While the mention of these products in Apple’s software doesn’t prove much – AMD could have provided this driver and included them by accident – it is reasonable to expect Apple will take advantage of them. Apple has used Polaris and Vega chips for years, and there’s no reason why they wouldn’t use Navi as well. What’s a little less likely, and all the more intriguing for it, is the possibility of Apple using AMD processors.
Mentioned in the code are five generations of mobile AMD processors. The first three are existing generations, but the fourth is Renoir, which AMD announced at CES 2020. Renoir uses 7nm Zen 2 processing cores and Vega graphics.

Apple’s software also labels a new Van Gogh architecture. Van Gogh is often referenced in conjunction with Navi, leading to speculation it will be the first APU with RDNA graphics.
If Apple is going to launch a product with new AMD hardware this year, they’ll likely do it at WWDC in June. They’ve usually announced updates to macOS there, and generally, bring some professional hardware like the Mac Pro or iMac along, too.

WhatsApp for Android Beta 2.20.13 Download – Blog – 10 minute

WhatsApp Beta for Android lets you enjoy the latest additions to the messaging service before they hit the final release on Google Play Store. The latest Beta (version 2.20.13) adds the long awaited Dark Theme feature. More instructions on how to enable it are in the description below.
WhatsApp is available for Android, iPhone / iOS and Windows / Mac. WhatsApp is a cross-platform messaging service, so those devices can all message each other. Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
Features:

No hidden costs: Once you and your friends download the application, you can use it to chat as much as you want. Send a million messages a day to your friends for free! WhatsApp uses your Internet connection: Edge/3G/4G or Wi-Fi when available.

Multimedia: Send Video, Images, and Voice notes to your friends and contacts.

Group Chat: Enjoy group conversations with your contacts. Add or Remove group participants, change group subject and set a group icon.

Personal: Set a profile photo which will be shown to all your contacts

No international charges: Just like there is no added cost to send an international email, there is no cost to send WhatsApp messages internationally. Chat with your friends all over the world as long as they have WhatsApp Messenger installed and avoid those pesky international SMS costs.

Say no to pins and usernames: Why even bother having to remember yet another PIN or username? WhatsApp works with your phone number, just like SMS would, and integrates flawlessly with your existing phone address book.

No need to log in/out: No more confusion about getting logged off from another computer or device. With push notifications WhatsApp is always on and always connected.

No need to add buddies: Your Address Book is used to automatically connect you with your contacts. Your contacts who already have WhatsApp Messenger will be automatically displayed under Favorites, similar to a buddy list.

Offline Messages: Even if you miss your push notifications or turn off your iPhone, WhatsApp will save your messages offline until you retrieve them during the next application use.

And much more: Share location and places, Exchange contacts, Custom wallpaper, Custom notification sounds, Landscape mode, Message timestamps, Tempemail chat history, Broadcast messages and media to many contacts at once, and much much more.

What’s New:
Dark Mode is finally here! To install follow these instructions:

Download the file found here.
Open Whatsapp, touch the three dot menu in the upper right corner and select Settings.
In Settings, select Chats (Theme, wallpapers, chat history)
In Chats, select Theme and within Theme you will find Dark.

Previous releases:

Added call waiting support so you can choose to accept an incoming WhatsApp call while you’re already on another call.
You can now require a fingerprint to unlock WhatsApp. Tap Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock and enable Unlock with fingerprint.
Fixed an issue which caused fast battery drain.

New Privacy Settings for Groups
WhatsApp groups continue to connect family, friends, coworkers, classmates and more. As people turn to groups for important conversations, users have asked for more control over their experience. Today, we’re introducing a new privacy setting and invite system to help you decide who can add you to groups.
To enable it, go to Settings in your app, then tap Account > Privacy > Groups and select one of three options: “Nobody”, “My Contacts”, or “Everyone”. “Nobody” means you’ll have to approve joining every group to which you’re invited, and “My Contacts” means only users you have in your address book can add you to groups.
In those cases, the person adding you to a group will be prompted to send a private invite through an individual chat, giving you the choice of joining the group. You’ll have three days to accept the invite before it expires.
With these new features, users will have more control over the group messages they receive. These new privacy settings will begin rolling out to some users starting today and will be available worldwide in the coming weeks to those using the latest version of WhatsApp.
Introducing Stickers
From emoji and camera features to Status and animated GIFs, we’re always looking to add new features that make communicating with friends and family on WhatsApp easy and fun. We’re excited to introduce a new way for people to express themselves with stickers.
We’ve also added support for third-party sticker packs to allow designers and developers around the world to create stickers for WhatsApp. To do this, we’ve included a set of APIs and interfaces that allow you to build sticker apps that add stickers to WhatsApp on Android or iOS. You can publish your sticker app like any other app to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and users who download and install your app will be able to start sending those stickers right from within WhatsApp. You can learn more about creating your own sticker apps for WhatsApp here.
To use stickers in a chat, simply tap the new sticker button and select the sticker you want to share. You can add new sticker packs by tapping the plus icon.
Deleting messages. You can delete messages for everyone or just for yourself.
To delete messages for everyone
Deleting messages for everyone allows you to delete specific messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the message you sent contains a mistake.
Messages you successfully delete for everyone will be replaced with “This message was deleted” in your recipients’ chats (*). Similarly, if you see “This message was deleted” in a chat, it means that the sender deleted their message for everyone.
You can only delete messages for everyone for up to seven minutes after sending. Once seven minutes have passed, there is no way to delete messages for everyone. To delete messages for everyone:

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.
Tap and hold the message > choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once.
Tap Delete > Delete for Everyone.

To delete messages for yourself
Deleting messages for yourself allows you to delete your copy of messages you’ve sent or received from your phone. This has no effect on your recipients’ chats. Your recipients will still see the messages in their chat screen. To delete messages for yourself:

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete.
Tap and hold the message > choose Delete from the menu. Optionally, select more messages to delete multiple messages at once.
Tap Delete > Delete for Me.

Web client for desktop computers
The desktop app is available for Windows 8 and Windows 10, and Mac OS 10.9 and higher, and is synced with WhatsApp on your mobile device. Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more. Upon downloading and opening the app, scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings).

Microsoft’s Chromium-powered Edge browser is out of beta, download it here – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Microsoft’s original Edge browser never quite took off, but the company hoped to change that when it revealed its intention to move the browser over to the Chromium ecosystem. After months of beta testing, Microsoft feels the new Edge is finally ready for prime time and has launched it to the public.
The browser first arrived in Beta back in April, but today’s Edge launch should hopefully be a bit more stable and feature-rich than it was in the past. However, don’t expect anything revolutionary here.
Download shortcut: Microsoft Edge for Windows and macOS
The new Edge has the usual array of privacy and tracking prevention features you’d expect from a modern browser, Windows 10 “[optimizations]” (whatever that means), as well as access to both the Microsoft Web Store and the Chrome Web Store for all of your extension-related needs. Pretty standard stuff, for the most part.
Of course, one of the most significant changes arriving with the browser is its new look. If you asked a casual internet user to take a look at the browser and guess what it is (without the help of any branding), they’d probably assume they were looking at Google Chrome.

Aside from a slightly different tab shape in Edge and a few tweaked icons, the browsers look nearly identical in every way. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean existing Edge fans will have to get used to an entirely new UI, which might be easier said than done.
Nonetheless, if you like the look and feel of Chrome but don’t necessarily want to buy directly into Google’s ecosystem (outside of using a Chromium browser, that is), the new Edge might be a solid alternative. There are a few notable differences, of course — Edge’s default search engine is Bing, it offers Windows 10 users the ability to stream 4K Netflix video, and Microsoft has disabled or replaced several Chromium features for its new browser.
However, both pieces of software still offer a similar (or identical, in some cases) core user experience. Over time, Microsoft plans to roll out additional Edge-exclusive features to help the browser stand out, such as a “Collections” function that ties into Office 365, but they’re still a ways off.
If you have any thoughts on the new Edge, whether they’re positive or negative, feel free to drop them in the comments below.

ProtonMail pushes ProtonCalendar into beta – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: As 2020 begins, it’s safe to say 2019 was the year that trust in “Big Tech” plummeted. As that happens, companies like Proton and Mozilla are becoming better positioned as alternatives to Google as consumers yearn for more and better privacy. Well known encrypted email provider ProtonMail is getting a much requested calendar option, giving users another privacy-first alternative.
Just before the New Year, encrypted email provider ProtonMail announced it was launching its encrypted calendar in public beta. Aptly named, ProtonCalendar will initially be available to users with a paid ProtonMail account as part of the ProtonMail 4.0 beta. A basic version of ProtonCalendar will eventually roll out to all ProtonMail users, with paid users receiving added functionality, much the way ProtonMail works.
ProtonCalendar will rely on client-side, end-to-end encryption based on PGP standards to secure data. While Proton claims ProtonCalendar is the first fully encrypted calendar, this isn’t entirely true, as Tutanota also has an encrypted calendar option.
ProtonCalendar will serve as an extension of Proton’s privacy focused suite of products and services, as the Switzerland-based company already offers email and a VPN service.

Additionally, Proton has further plans that include ProtonDrive, a cloud storage service with cloud software that will challenge Google Drive and its suite of cloud software, like Google Docs.
According to the Proton team, ProtonCalendar will encrypt the event title, description, location, and participants for every event before being stored on Proton’s servers, so no third party — including ProtonMail — can access the contents of the calendar. For more information on ProtonCalendar’s encryption, they had previously outlined their security model.

ckbk pulls a ‘Spotify for recipes’ out of the beta oven – gpgmail

Cooking may be under sustained attack by a wave of on-demand food delivery startups, with names that can double as gluttonous calls to action (oh hey Just Eat!), but that hasn’t stopped London-based startup ckbk from pushing in the opposite direction — with a digital service that offers on-demand access to high quality recipes licensed from major publishers of best selling cookbooks.

Indeed, the ckbk platform serves up not just individual recipes but entire cookbooks for browsing in app form.

The ckbk platform, which launches out of beta today — after a Kickstarter campaign last year that raised just over $55k — is being touted by its creators as ‘Spotify for recipes’. Think ‘playlists’ of professionally programmed dishes to whip up in the kitchen.

At launch it offers access to a catalog of more than 350 cookbooks (80,000+ recipes) — a culinary library that’s slated to keep growing.

For $8.99/£8.99 per month the premium ckbk user gets to tuck in to unlimited access to this “curated collection of cookbooks” — with content selected using “recommendations from hundreds of chefs and food experts including Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi”.

A freemium layer offers access gratis to three recipes per month.

Subscribers are essentially paying for someone else with (most likely) superior knowledge of cooking to sort the wheat from the chaff so you don’t have to do the legwork of figuring out what freebie Internet recipes are worth investing your time (and after it, teeth) in.

Not just any old recipes, editorially curated recipes is the ckbk promise.

Content partners at launch include “dozens” of major publishers — including Chronicle Books, Macmillan, Oxford University Press, Rodale, Simon & Schuster, Workman Publishing and Penguin Random House’s Rodale and Struik imprints.

Culinary content available via the platform is billed as spanning both contemporary authors like Molly Yeh and David Tanis, to award winning authorities and Michelin starred chefs, while also dipping into old  culinary classics, such as On Food & Cooking and the Oxford Companion to Food, and offering works penned by legendary French chef and restauranteur Escoffier.

Publishers participating in ckbk’s platform are being promised a new digital revenue stream (it’s not clear what the revenue share is) — sweetened with data in the form of “new insights into patterns of cookbook recipe usage” they can use to feed into future editorial output. So of course all ckbk users are having their foodie browsing extensively data-mined.

To push its ‘premium recipes’ proposition ckbk is trailing a bunch of forthcoming promotional partnerships with kitchenware brands, food-related ecommerce brands, food events, culinary schools and publishing channels — which it says will be launching in the next few months.

It also says recipes on the platform have been optimized for integration with connected kitchen appliances.

European company BSH (whose appliance brands include Bosch, Gaggenau, NEFF and Siemens) is named as the first strategic partner for ckbk. It will be offering premium membership of the service to UK buyers of its NEFF N90 connected oven.

A subset of ‘smart’ cookbook recipes on ckbk will automatically set the correct time and oven temperature via the N90’s Home Connect system — for anyone who can’t be bothered to twiddle the dials themselves.

ckbk adds that selected recipes will be further “optimized” to make the most of features and cooking modes of the smart oven. A tidbit which might make a seasoned chef raise an eyebrow and question whether that’s heading towards recipes for robots.

The licensing project has certainly been a slow burn. The company behind ckbk, 1000 Cookbooks, has been working on getting the concept to market since 2014, per Crunchbase.

It says it’s currently raising a $2M seed funding round — having previously raised a total of $750,000 in pre-seed funding via investors, the Techstars/BSH Future Home accelerator program, and its Kickstarter campaign.

Apple Music launches a public beta on the web – gpgmail

Apple Music is coming to the web. Apple today is launching a public beta of its popular music streaming service on the web, which will be available to all Apple Music subscribers worldwide. This is the first time that Apple Music has been officially offered on the web, though an unofficial app over the past few months has gained attention after attracting hundreds of thousands of users.

Clearly, there was some pent-up demand for a web version of the service.

To use the new Apple Music web version, subscribers can visit the link beta.music.apple.com and sign in with their Apple ID.

At launch, the service includes many core features, like searching and playing songs from the Apple Music catalog, searching and playing songs from your library (if Sync Library is enabled), accessing your playlists and more.

All the main sections from the Apple Music app will also be available, including Library, Search, For You, Browse and Radio. Other features will roll out over time as the service is further developed.

During the beta testing period, Apple will be soliciting feedback from customers as it works on the product to help it streamline features and squash any bugs.

At a later date, new users will be able to sign up for Apple Music through the website. But for the time being, you’ll need to be an existing subscriber who signed up elsewhere.

The web version is now one of several ways Apple is making its music service more accessible across platforms.

The service is already available as an app for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch and Mac. And at this year’s WWDC 2019 event, Apple announced its plans to dismantle iTunes on the Mac, making Music a standalone app with access to both downloads, library content and Apple Music’s streaming service.

Apple Music is also offered on non-Apple platforms, like Android, Windows, Sonos and Amazon Echo.

Cross-platform availability is essential in today’s streaming market, as Apple Music faces competition from Spotify, Pandora/SiriusXM, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and other local players.

At last count, Spotify had 108 million paying subscribers in the quarter ending in June and Apple Music topped 60 million subscribers in late June.

Minecraft Earth closed beta goes live on Android in five cities – gpgmail

When the beta for Minecraft Earth (think the building concepts of Minecraft mashed up with the real world wandering/augmented reality/collecting concepts of Pokémon GO) first went live back in July, it did so with a catch or two: it only worked on iOS, and only players in Seattle or London were actually able to play.

The beta pool is expanding dramatically this morning, with players on Android finally being invited to jump in. Meanwhile, the region locks have expanded over the past few weeks to include Tokyo, Stockholm, and Mexico City along with Seattle and London.

Curiously, those new Android users will immediately get access to a fledgling feature that iOS players haven’t: the in-game currency, rubies. Rubies can be earned or bought, and allow players to buy more build plates upon which they can piece together their blocky creations. In a blog post on the beta expansion, the company promises that any rubies acquired during the beta will follow the player into the eventual public release, and that iOS support for rubies is coming “very soon.”

Alas, you can’t just hop in the Google Play store, hit download, and get to building. It’s still a closed beta, so you’ll have to sign up and be invited in before you’ll be able to start.

We went hands-on with an early build of Minecraft Earth right after it was announced — check out our early impressions here.
