The rumor mill got it right once again. Apple subsidiary Beats has officially introduced a new version of its tethered wireless headphones that’ll be available to purchase later this week.
The new Powerbeats earphones connect to each other with a single round cable that runs behind the head, allowing users to dangle the headphones from their neck when not in use. They feature on-ear controls so you don’t need to reach for your paired device every time you want to skip songs or adjust the volume, hands-free control via Siri and enhanced call performance thanks to multiple microphones that target your voice and filter out background noise.

Beats said the new Powerbeats match the design and advanced engineering of the Powerbeats Pro, “with the same powerful sound and reinforced sweat and water resistance.” Inside the box, you’ll get four different sizes of ear tips to help maximize comfort.
Powerbeats are priced at $149.95 and will be available in your choice of white, black and red color schemes starting March 18.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced today that it has developed the BLEnDer ICE battery-powered wireless communication terminal for use in sensor networks to collect gas and water meter data and remotely control sensors in the networks. This terminal will enable meters to be automatically read and both monitored and controlled remotely to achieve greater efficiency in the maintenance operations of utilities and infrastructure operators. Upcoming Apple Powerbeats 4 earbuds leak, promise 15 hour battery life – Blog – 10 minute

Apple’s unannounced Powerbeats 4 have leaked online with pictures and specs. It looks like these new earbuds will feature Apple’s H1 chip and around 15 hours of battery life, up from 12 hours on the Powerbeats 3.
Apple released the Powerbeats Pro wireless earbuds last year that introduced additions such as the H1 chip that brought it on par with the company’s own AirPods Pro. The Powerbeats 4 look to close the gap, adding several upgrades from the previous model according to WinFuture. The report specifies that the Powerbeats 4 will feature modified cable routing to improve ear comfort as well as an improved plastic housing to increase durability and resiliency. The sound quality should be on par with the Powerbeats Pro including “clearer playback and a wider frequency band.”
The inclusion of the H1 chip brings “Hey Siri” support and improved Bluetooth stability over the older W1 chip from the Powerbeat 3 earbuds. Even better, Apple is promising 15 hours of battery life and a feature called “Fast Fuel,” which gives an hour of playback for just five minutes of charging. Though pricing was not part of the leak, the earbuds will likely be priced similarly to the $199 Powerbeats 3. The Powerbeats 4 will also be offered in black, white, and red.
With the coronavirus affecting the global tech industry and events around the world, it remains to be seen when and how Apple plans to introduce the revamped Powerbeats 4. The company may push the new earbuds to the Apple Store after an online announcement instead of a flashy event. That said, with Apple warning of worldwide iPhone shortages, they may also delay the release of this and other products until impact of the virus is lessened.

Renault’s transforming EV concept can extend to fit an extra battery – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Renault has unveiled a concept electric vehicle that’s a real-life transformer—sort of. While the Morphoz won’t be turning into a giant talking robot, its body can extend to fit a larger battery and offer more interior space.
When in its standard “City Mode,” the Morphoz features a 40kWh battery connected to a single motor, giving the car a range of 249 miles that Renault says is perfect for traveling around cities and suburbs. But that distance might not be enough for long journeys, so the car has a clever trick.

If a driver wants to increase the Morphoz’s range, they just need to visit a Renault battery station, where it can be stretched into its “Travel Mode.” The EV’s body lengthens by 8 inches using its “active bodywork,” where the side flaps move to extend the wheelbase.

In Travel Mode, an extra 50kWh battery extender pack can be placed into the floor, increasing the car’s range to 435 miles. The extra length means more legroom for passengers and space for an extra two suitcases in the trunk.

When you get back home from a long trip, “the user stops at a station to return the extra batteries and revert to the original 40 kWh capacity of the vehicle’s City configuration,” said Renault (via Engadget). The station will recharge the batteries ready for the next time. When not in use, the extra batteries would support the national grid and could be used to store electricity from renewable sources, or to power streetlights and nearby buildings.
In addition to the special stations, the Morphoz can be charged by wireless induction at home and while driving on roads equipped with induction chargers. It also supports level 3 autonomous driving, referred to as “eyes-off.” Those behind the wheel can watch a movie or use their phone but are required to intervene if required, so no falling asleep.

Other futuristic features include a cabin that can move around depending on the passengers and driver, which the car detects. There’s also a retractable steering wheel that opens up the “living screen” instrument panel, and the interior includes plenty of recycled materials.

Being a concept, the Morphoz may never hit the production line, but some of its features will likely make their way to other cars.
In other EV news, Citroën recently unveiled a 2-seat electric vehicle that costs $22 per month and doesn’t require a license.

AI could supercharge battery development for electric vehicles- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Battery performance can make or break the electric vehicle experience, from driving range to charging time to the lifetime of the car. Now, artificial intelligence has made dreams like recharging an EV in the time it takes to stop at a gas station a more likely reality, and could help improve other aspects of battery technology.
For decades, advances in electric vehicle batteries have been limited by a major bottleneck: evaluation times. At every stage of the battery development process, new technologies must be tested for months or even years to determine how long they will last. But now, a team led by Stanford professors Stefano Ermon and William Chueh has developed a machine learning-based method that slashes these testing times by 98 percent. Although the group tested their method on battery charge speed, they said it can be applied to numerous other parts of the battery development pipeline and even to non-energy technologies.
“In battery testing, you have to try a massive number of things, because the performance you get will vary drastically,” said Ermon, an assistant professor of computer science. “With AI, we’re able to quickly identify the most promising approaches and cut out a lot of unnecessary experiments.”
The study, published by Nature on Feb. 19, was part of a larger collaboration among scientists from Stanford, MIT and the Toyota Research Institute that bridges foundational academic research and real-world industry applications. The goal: finding the best method for charging an EV battery in 10 minutes that maximizes the battery’s overall lifetime. The researchers wrote a program that, based on only a few charging cycles, predicted how batteries would respond to different charging approaches. The software also decided in real time what charging approaches to focus on or ignore. By reducing both the length and number of trials, the researchers cut the testing process from almost two years to 16 days.
“We figured out how to greatly accelerate the testing process for extreme fast charging,” said Peter Attia, who co-led the study while he was a graduate student. “What’s really exciting, though, is the method. We can apply this approach to many other problems that, right now, are holding back battery development for months or years.”
A smarter approach to battery testing
Designing ultra-fast-charging batteries is a major challenge, mainly because it is difficult to make them last. The intensity of the faster charge puts greater strain on the battery, which often causes it to fail early. To prevent this damage to the battery pack, a component that accounts for a large chunk of an electric car’s total cost, battery engineers must test an exhaustive series of charging methods to find the ones that work best.
The new research sought to optimize this process. At the outset, the team saw that fast-charging optimization amounted to many trial-and-error tests – something that is inefficient for humans, but the perfect problem for a machine.
“Machine learning is trial-and-error, but in a smarter way,” said Aditya Grover, a graduate student in computer science who co-led the study. “Computers are far better than us at figuring out when to explore – try new and different approaches – and when to exploit, or zero in, on the most promising ones.”
The team used this power to their advantage in two key ways. First, they used it to reduce the time per cycling experiment. In a previous study, the researchers found that instead of charging and recharging every battery until it failed – the usual way of testing a battery’s lifetime -they could predict how long a battery would last after only its first 100 charging cycles. This is because the machine learning system, after being trained on a few batteries cycled to failure, could find patterns in the early data that presaged how long a battery would last.
Second, machine learning reduced the number of methods they had to test. Instead of testing every possible charging method equally, or relying on intuition, the computer learned from its experiences to quickly find the best protocols to test.
By testing fewer methods for fewer cycles, the study’s authors quickly found an optimal ultra-fast-charging protocol for their battery. In addition to dramatically speeding up the testing process, the computer’s solution was also better – and much more unusual – than what a battery scientist would likely have devised, said Ermon.
“It gave us this surprisingly simple charging protocol – something we didn’t expect,” Ermon said. Instead of charging at the highest current at the beginning of the charge, the algorithm’s solution uses the highest current in the middle of the charge. “That’s the difference between a human and a machine: The machine is not biased by human intuition, which is powerful but sometimes misleading.”
Wider applications
The researchers said their approach could accelerate nearly every piece of the battery development pipeline: from designing the chemistry of a battery to determining its size and shape, to finding better systems for manufacturing and storage. This would have broad implications not only for electric vehicles but for other types of energy storage, a key requirement for making the switch to wind and solar power on a global scale.
“This is a new way of doing battery development,” said Patrick Herring, co-author of the study and a scientist at the Toyota Research Institute. “Having data that you can share among a large number of people in academia and industry, and that is automatically analyzed, enables much faster innovation.”
The study’s machine learning and data collection system will be made available for future battery scientists to freely use, Herring added. By using this system to optimize other parts of the process with machine learning, battery development – and the arrival of newer, better technologies – could accelerate by an order of magnitude or more, he said.
The potential of the study’s method extends even beyond the world of batteries, Ermon said. Other big data testing problems, from drug development to optimizing the performance of X-rays and lasers, could also be revolutionized by the use of machine learning optimization. And ultimately, he said, it could even help to optimize one of the most fundamental processes of all.
“The bigger hope is to help the process of scientific discovery itself,” Ermon said. “We’re asking: Can we design these methods to come up with hypotheses automatically? Can they help us extract knowledge that humans could not? As we get better and better algorithms, we hope the whole scientific discovery process may drastically speed up.”

16in MacBook Pro review: bigger battery, new keyboard, new Apple | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Apple’s new 16in MacBook Pro is bigger and heavier, but that’s a very good thing, with the largest battery you can have in a laptop and a new keyboard that looks to kick the troubles of the past few years to the kerb.
It’s a bit of a U-turn from Apple and demonstrates that the Californian tech firm is finally listening to its hardcore audience: the professionals.
The 16in MacBook Pro is the largest, most expensive laptop that Apple makes and is a direct replacement for the 15in MacBook Pro that was made up until November 2019. Starting at £2,399 and reaching £5,769 with all the options ticked, it’s clear this is no ordinary computer for general users.
This is a machine is designed for developers, video editors, sound engineers and other people working in industries that demand power and performance for as long as possible.
But there are two new things that might interest general buyers as a preview of what’s likely to come to Apple’s other laptops that are more suitable general computers: a new keyboard and a new battery.
Thicker, heavier and better

Fundamentally the design of the MacBook Pro hasn’t changed much since the introduction of the fourth-generation machine in late 2016. From the outside it looks practically identical, except it’s ever-so-slightly bigger than the 15in MacBook Pro.
This fifth-generation machine is 8.6mm wider, 5.2mm deeper, 0.7mm thicker and 170g heavier than the old version, increasing the screen size from 15.4in to a round 16in on the diagonal. It has the same four Thunderbolt 3 ports and still has a headphone socket. The keyboard has different mechanisms under the keys but is otherwise very similar, as is the gigantic trackpad. Apple makes the best trackpads in the business and this one is no different.
On the audio front the speakers and mics have been upgraded. The machine now comes with a six-speaker system built into it, which are still laptop speakers and won’t replace a set of headphones or a dedicated sound system, but sound phenomenal for what they are.
A three-mic array is capable of beamforming, cancelling background noise and is of high-enough quality that you don’t necessarily need to reach for a dedicated microphone for impromptu recording sessions.

The new Magic Keyboard

Much has been written about Apple’s recent laptop keyboards. The butterfly keyboard introduced with the 2015 MacBook was thinner, crisper, louder and with only a small amount of travel. I quite liked it, but it was plagued with failures due to dust getting under the keys and stopping them from depressing.
The 16in MacBook Pro has a new “magic keyboard” that moves back to the traditional scissor switches used by older Apple laptops and practically every other manufacturer. The keys are more stable and the travel is slightly shallower than Apple’s pre-butterfly keyboards, arriving at a nice combination of the best bits of the butterfly and scissor-switch keyboards.
Most will like the feel. It’s stable and has enough travel. It’s also easier to repair, so while it shouldn’t suffer from the same dust issues plaguing the butterfly keyboard, at least it should be easier to fix if something goes wrong.

Apple has also added a dedicated ESC key in the top left, which is separated from the Touch Bar. This is something developers in particular have asked for and was a welcome addition for the Guardian’s developers’ team.
The direction arrows are now back in an inverted T arrangement, too, which was a frequent request. The Touch ID fingerprint scanner has also been separated from the Touch Bar, which led to far fewer accidental triggers of Siri – the first key by default on the Touch Bar – when I attempted to authenticate something with my fingerprint.
The 16in screen

The screen is marginally bigger at 16in on the diagonal rather than 15.4in, although you can only really tell side by side. The display has a higher resolution, which provides slightly more screen real estate in use, as well as being slightly crisper on paper with a density of 226 pixels per inch (up from 220ppi).
On the whole it’s one of the nicest displays I’ve used on a laptop. Rich, bright, easy to use in most lighting conditions, it is individually calibrated at the factory and it has a mode that simulates high dynamic range. But it is not a true HDR display nor is it 4K, which may be an issue for those looking to work with content in both although most will likely transition to an dedicated edit suite for serious work. The MacBook Pro does support output to up to two 6K or four 4K displays simultaneously, for those who use this as their sole machine working at a desk.
100Wh of battery

Other than the slightly bigger screen and marginally thicker keyboard, the majority of the increased weight and thickness of the 16in MacBook Pro is down to its significantly larger battery.
There’s a cap on the size of battery allowed on a flight of 100Wh and that’s what Apple has fitted here, just shy of a 20% increase from the 83.6Wh battery in the previous generation machine. Battery life on a machine like this entirely depends on what you’re using for.
The laptop would manage a full nine-hour work day of writing, browser tabs, image editing and a suite of chat apps, both work and personal open, with the screen set to 75% brightness on battery power with about 10% left.
But you’re looking more like a few hours of video editing, which is more than enough for quick adjustments in the field in between connections to a power socket. The larger battery was welcomed by the Guardian’s video team, who said the increased weight was negligible in the grand scheme of things.
Observations

Price
The 16in MacBook Pro starts at £2,399 with a 6-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and an AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of VRAM.
The laptop as tested cost £3,789 equipped with an 8-core Intel Core i9, 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of VRAM.
For comparison, the 15in Razer Blade Studio Edition costs £3,999.99, the Dell XPS 15 with an Intel Core i7 starts at under £1,500.
Verdict
If you were looking for a new Mac laptop as a workstation, but were put off buying one because of the troubles with the keyboard, or that it just didn’t last long enough to get whatever you needed to done in the field, the 16in MacBook Pro is the answer.
Aside from the new keyboard, it’s clear Apple has listened to at least a few requests from power users. The escape key is back by popular demand, as is the T-shaped layout of the arrow keys, while a separated power/Touch ID button is much more user friendly. You can even fix some things without fully dismantling the machine, which is a step forward.
There’s still no SD card slot or any port option not USB-C but by now most will have hubs, dongles or new replacement cables for the necessary things.
The 16in MacBook Pro is most certainly not the laptop for general users who just want a big screen – the price alone should be able to tell you that. But if you know you need this sort of capability, then the MacBook Pro is in a similar price bracket to competitors and can be specified with a frankly absurd amount of capacity, which might make the difference.
The first of the fifth-generation MacBook Pros is a return to form for Apple, and bodes well for further refreshes of the company’s slightly more affordable laptop lines expected in the near future.

In a nutshell: Remember the good old days when phones were made to last and had batteries you could take out? Samsung does. The company has quietly launched a new Galaxy handset that joins its lineup of rugged devices while boasting a 4,050mAh removable battery.
With their fragile bodies covered in glass, many of today’s smartphones break if you so much as cough in their direction. The new XCover Pro, however, isn’t as easy to destroy, thanks to its US military standard MIL-STD-810 certification and IP68 water/dust resistance rating.
Unlike many rugged smartphones, the successor to the Galaxy XCover 4 has many of the design features found in modern handsets. There’s a large 6.3-inch LCD screen with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a punch hole notch in the top left corner.

The XCover Pro’s internals includes a mid-range octa-core Exynos 9611 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of memory that’s expandable through a microSD card. There’s also a rear camera setup consisting of a 25MP and 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 13MP selfie cam, and a capacitive fingerprint reader in the power button.
As this phone is designed for use in hostile environments, it comes with two programmable buttons that control the flashlight or for creating text messages via voice. But the most compelling aspect for many people might be the removable battery—something we rarely see these days.
The Galaxy XCover Pro, which comes with Android 9 Pie but could receive a future Android 10 update, launches in Europe next month for around 500 Euros (about $556). No word on if or when it’ll come to the US.

Klipsch to showcase noise-cancelling headphones with 30 hours of battery life at CES – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: Renowned loudspeaker maker Klipsch on Thursday announced intentions to showcase nearly half a dozen new smart and active noise cancelling headphones at CES including the Over Ear Active Noise Cancelling headphones.
Despite the uninspiring name, Klipsch’s new over-ear cans are appealing. These Bluetooth 5 active noise cancelling headphones are bolstered with “ultra-plush” memory foam earpads and sport a lightweight design for lengthy listening sessions.

Speaking of, Klipsch said you can expect up to 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. Some manufacturers have a bad habit of exaggerating battery life claims by including stored power from included charging cases in their stats but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.
Klipsch’s latest are compatible with SBC, aptX HD and AAC and should work with the digital assistant of your choice out of the box.

Over-ear headphones like these are personally right up my alley. In practice, it’s proven difficult to find in-ear buds that fit properly without discomfort. On-ear cans are completely out of the question for me as the constant pressure against the cartilage of my outer ear is a deal breaker. Over-hear headsets like these eliminate all of those issues and are generally more immersive.
Klipsch said the Over Ear Active Noise Cancelling headphones will be available in the fall of 2020 (that’s a long wait) priced at $399.

Mazda says EVs with large battery packs are worse for the environment than diesel cars – Blog – 10 minute

A hot potato: It’s generally accepted that electric vehicles are better for the environment than their diesel alternatives, but Mazda argues that’s not always the case. The company says its MX-30 crossover comes with a 35.5kWh battery because it’s “responsibly” sized, meaning the pack’s overall CO2 emissions are comparable to a diesel Mazda 3 compact hatchback.
When Mazda unveiled the MX-30 crossover at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, it revealed the EV’s 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery. That gives it a range of about 200 km (124 miles)—substantially lower than EVs such as the Tesla Model S and its 100kWh battery, which allows a range of around 600km (373 miles). Even the similarly priced Hyundai Kona EV manages 289km (179 miles) on its 39kWh pack.
Speaking to Automotive News, Mazda’s European research director, Christian Schultze, said it chose the battery pack size for environmental reasons. He says its overall CO2 lifetime footprint, which includes manufacturing and energy consumption, is similar to a diesel Mazda compact, and that’s even when replacing the battery after 100,000 miles.
Mazda says using a 95kWh battery pack like the one found in the Tesla would mean much higher overall CO2 emissions due to its larger size and greater energy consumption. And the problem would be made worse when the pack needs replacing.
Mazda shared a graph to try and illustrate its point. It says the green line represents a 95kWh EV.

It’s worth noting that numerous studies show EVs produce less CO2 emissions over their lifetimes than diesel vehicles, and Mazda based its figures on European electricity generation averages from 2016. For some people, however, the claim of a more environmentally friendly EV could outweigh its low range.
In other Mazda news, the company last week issued a recall for 35,000 fourth-generation Mazda3 vehicles over their faulty emergency brake system.

Apple Unveils iPhone 11, Pro, Pro Max, With Heavy Emphasis on Cameras, Battery Life

Apple unveiled its upcoming trio of new iPhones today, covering the iPhone 11 and the new iPhone Pro product family. The company is retiring the confusing “XR” and “XS” brands that it deployed last year, in favor of a simplified structure. The iPhone 11 is just the iPhone 11, while the professional model will come in two flavors: iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

As expected, these devices make camera features and technology a major component of their own value propositions. But the iPhone 11, at least, subtly nods to the fact that Apple’s price increases were anything but well-received last year. The base model iPhone 11 will be priced at $699, $50 less than last years’ iPhone XR. While this doesn’t make the device ‘entry-level,’ (new or not, $699 is not an entry-level price), it at least shows the company is responding to consumer’s refusal to buy its higher-end devices — at least, a little. The iPhone 11 Pro still starts at $999, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is a $1,099 device. Pre-orders begin on September 13, with shipments to start on September 20.

The iPhone 11 has a 6.1-inch screen and will be offered in a variety of colors, including black, green, purple, red, white, and yellow. Features like haptic touch, a True Tone LCD, and a dual-camera are all standard. According to Apple, the new A13 Bionic will offer up to an hour of increased battery life over the iPhone XR, which already had the best battery life in the iPhone family.

As for the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, these two devices are 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch, respectively. They have what Apple is calling a “Super Retina XDR” OLED display with support for the P3 color space, which is a wider color gamut than a standard SDR monitor or phone display. Dolby Vision and HDR10 are both supported on the iPhone Pro family, and the display can handle up to 1,200 nits of brightness. Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro advertise features like Dolby Atmos support and supposedly offer better spatial audio performance.

All of these new devices run on Apple’s A13 Bionic SoC, about which relatively little is known at this juncture. Apple claims the new chip offers up to 20 percent faster performance and its neural engine is supposedly more efficient as well. Apple claims the iPhone 11 Pro will get four hours more battery life than the iPhone XS, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max will last five hours longer than the iPhone XS Max. These claims seem unusually large, and I’m wondering about the workloads Apple used to test them. Battery life on smartphones is highly situational depending on what, exactly, you are doing. We’ve absolutely seen these kinds of battery life improvements before — but they’ve typically arrived when a workload that was previously being handled in software (like video decoding) is transferred to fixed-function hardware blocks (like a GPU’s onboard video decoder).

We’re not saying Apple can’t deliver a 4-5 hour battery life improvement, but that improvement may be very workload-dependent. A 4-5 hour improvement in battery life in all heavy use scenarios would be the equivalent of a major leap forward in battery technology. That’s a bit farther than we’re willing to go until device characteristics have been thoroughly tested.

Apple is clearly staking the iPhone 11 on its camera tech. When you visit the landing page for the iPhone 11, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d actually dropped into a product page describing the advances in Apple’s camera technology as opposed to the general landing page for the phone. The iPhone 11 has a new camera system with one 12MP wide camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The first supports optical image stabilization, while the latter has a 120-degree field of view. The Camera app has been updated to allow you to you see outside the framing of the photo for when you need to take a shot in tight quarters.

The iPhone 11 Pro includes a triple-camera system with a 12MP wide camera with an equivalent focal length of 26mm and an f/1.8 aperture. There’s also a 12MP ultrawide camera (13mm focal length, f/2.4 aperture) and a 12MP telephoto camera with a 52mm focal length and an f/2.0 aperture. Much of Apple’s live event and its webpages are filled with glossy demonstrations of the kind of photos you can take with the new iPhone Pro and professionals extolling the benefits of the new device compared with previous models.

David Cardinal is our resident photography expert, so I’m going to defer to him as far as any professional comparison between professional DSLR cameras and the integrated models present in phones. I expect that this focus on the iPhone’s camera technology will at least help the device close the gap between itself and standalone DSLRs in some cases, particularly thanks to the new Night Mode, but that there will continue to be specific times and places where there’s an advantage to having a standalone professional product. It has been my observation that smartphones have gotten steadily better at providing a very good default, but there are intrinsic challenges to matching the benefits of a DSLR in such a limited amount of space.

The iPhone Pro, at least, includes a fast charger in the box. The iPhone 11 continues not to do so. All of these devices are rated for IP68 water-resistance, commonly referred to as being waterproof.

The iPhone may make photo and video editing on a small device easier, but you != Stanley Kubrick. Don’t feel bad. I am also != Stanley Kubrick.

The iPhone 11 Pro’s landing-page is even more photo and video-centric. It’s basically devoted to a demonstration of all the new device’s photo and video-editing features, or shots that claim to show the benefits of the new cameras. These sorts of claims will have to be evaluated to see how they hold up in objective testing, so I don’t actually have a lot to say about them, other than observing the fact that Apple is trying to push customers towards new products almost entirely on the basis of camera tech.

This may not be the worst approach. There are rumors that the company is planning a fairly major overhaul for the iPhone next year, with new features like 5G support set to be introduced at that date. Customers, meanwhile, tend to respond well to visual improvements — the original introduction of Retina displays was a huge win for Apple, and smartphone cameras are one of the few areas that have continued to improve at a fair pace even as overall device performance and battery life improvements have slowed.

There have been rumors that Apple will re-launch a new iPhone SE in 2020. If it intends to unveil such a device, it will do so at a later date. There was no mention of a new lower-end product. The iPhone 7 has been removed from sale; the iPhone 8 is now Apple’s lowest-end entry-level model at $449.
