My Health Record system hit by hack attempt – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

The My Health Record system was the subject of an attempted hack over the past 11 months, the Australian Digital Health Agency has revealed.
Tempemail health chief information officer Ronan O’Connor told a parliamentary inquiry into cyber resilience the cyber incident was one of two “potential data breaches” to occur since July 2019.
Both were reported to the Office of the Australia Information Commissioner as part of the notifiable data breaches scheme and neither resulted in any access to the system or data loss.
O’Connor said the first data breach notification related to a “potential compromise to external IT infrastructure supporting the wider My Health Record system”.
“Somebody tried to hack our system, so the external perimeter for our system,” he said on Tuesday.
“I want to assure the committee that there was no access into the My Health Record whatsoever. No information or personal sensitive information was accessed.”
O’Connor said the ADHA’s security monitoring tools picked up the “potential vulnerability within the system and as a consequence of that we notified the OAIC”.
“The OAIC has received what we shared with them and we also worked with the Australian Cyber Security Centre, and on that basis they were happy with the outcome,” he said.
It is not known when the attempted hack occurred. There has been heightened cyber activity during the coronavirus pandemic.
O’Connor said the ADHA or ACSC was unable to identify the actor involved in the attempted breach.
“We don’t have that level of information. We worked very closely with the ACSC and on that basis we don’t know the actor in this instance,” he said.
O’Connor said the second data breach investigation related to “a state health care facility”, but turned out to be a false alarm.
“They became aware that the system had potentially been accessed without the healthcare recipients authority,” he said.
“After an investigation was undertaken, it was confirmed that the individual whose record was accessed was indeed receiving healthcare at that facility at the time of access, so there was no compromise.”
The reduction in breach notifications is a markable improvement on the 38 potential data breaches that occurred in the 2018-19 financial year.
More to come.

Block party: eight brilliant Minecraft models to attempt at home | Games – Blog – 10 minute

With lockdown entering its fifth week, Minecraft is proving a useful venue for friends and families to meet up, play together and work on collaborative projects. The game is widely used in schools throughout the world to teach everything from sustainable farming to the history of art, and Microsoft recently made the many lessons and exercises in its Minecraft Education programme available to everyone with an Office 365 account.
If you have the game at home and are looking for new projects to attempt – maybe as part of your home schooling timetable – here are eight ideas that will test and expand your modelling skills.
And we’d love to see how you get on! Have a go at any of these ideas and send us a screenshot or photo of your model to [email protected] by 27 April. We’ll run a gallery of our favourite examples.
Build your own home

Sketch out your design on paper first … Adam Clarke’s Minecraft house. Photograph: Adam Clarke
When building something real, it is alway best to look about, take notes and sketch it out on paper first. This will help you figure out dimensions and which blocks you might want to use. In Minecraft, one block is about one metre in real life. This ratio mostly works, except for doors, so don’t worry too much. Think about the colours and textures you want. Don’t be afraid to use melons to make a floor – Minecraft has so many blocks to choose from and you can be inventive! Half-slabs are your friends. They can lift or lower a room to give a sense of space or height and can add edging and depth to exteriors. Think about furniture and fittings, too – using steps and signs can make fun seats, or what about black wool on an anvil to make a TV? Don’t forget to decorate your house; have fun and experiment. For an extra project, involve the whole family by finding out what your parents’ or grandparents’ childhood homes were like – and then build them.
Pixel art portraits

Think about shades of colour … Minecraft pixel art portrait. Photograph: Minecraft
To create a pixel art portrait, start by printing out a picture of yourself or a family member and then print out some squared paper. (There’s lots of free graph paper online.) Stick the picture to a window, then trace around the image using the graph paper. Estimate the squares of different colours and think about shades of colour, too. Coloured pens or pencils are great for this. Once you have a pixelated copy of your picture, use that as a template and match the colours to blocks in Minecraft.
Minecraft museum

Begin your build with some of the shapes you can see rather than the details … Minecraft museum. Photograph: Minecraft
Museum buildings come in lots of shapes and sizes, from neoclassical to conceptual. Start by researching different museums. You can base your build on a real or imaginary museum. Begin with some of the simple shapes that you can see. We call this a grey build – it creates the overall dimensions and shapes to give a sense of scale and room size. Next, take a first pass at decoration – don’t get stuck in details. Instead, look at making angles more defined, add in stairs and green areas, and perhaps seating and desks. Finish with the fine details – doors, windows, plants, lighting … and your museum’s collections.
The perfect school

Think about different spaces and activities to create your favourite place of learning. Photograph: Minecraft
It’s time to go back to school. For this build, recreate your place of learning. If you’ve always home-schooled, you can create one from a favourite book. Minecraft has loads of new blocks that are great for school-themed builds. Think about the different classrooms and spaces you might find and the different activities you can do, from making potions in the science lab to parkour in the gym.
Armour-stand band

Pop, rock, punk or glam … make an armour-stand band. Photograph: Minecraft
Like music? Why not make an armour-stand band – pop, rock, punk or glam. You can dress your armour stands in different styles, from diamond tiara to dyed leather. On Bedrock edition, you can even create different poses by crouching, looking at the armour stand and clicking. You have several Minecraft heads to choose from, too – Steve, zombie and skeleton, and even a dragon. See what musical styles you can create, and why not make them a stage, too?
Build a ship

Think about how your ship is powered – sails, oars, or steam; seafaring or airship? Photograph: Minecraft
Whether wooden, metal, old, new, shipwrecked or fantasy, ships are fun to build in Minecraft. Although they are essentially static structures, they are cool and pretty hard to build. Here are some tips to get you started. To create a basic ship hull, start by building a line, draw the ship’s hull from the side then, from above, draw the outline of the ship. Once you have these two elements blocked out, just join them together – you can add stairs and half-slabs to smooth out the curves. Once the hull is completed, think about the decks and how your ship is powered – sails, oars or steam; seafaring or airship? Once you have the hull and the deck, you can add whatever you want on top – it’s a bit like a cake that needs decorating.
Perfect parkour or mini-games

Get your friends together online to test your homemade games. Photograph: Minecraft
Minecraft is great for creating mini-games – from parkour challenges to Hunger Games survival contests. These games can be as simple or as complex as you want – the choice is yours. Parkour is simply jumping from one block to another. However, some jumps require perfect timing and landings, and you can have a lot of fun with obstacles – so why not up the risk a bit and add a pit of lava? To make an easy and fun parkour map, think about the style and themes. Write down as many ideas as you can and combine unusual things. The next step is building it. I went for floating coloured balloons in a giant human brain. Get your friends together online to test and refine your homemade games.
Build a themed rollercoaster

Use well-placed redstone blocks for power as you build a rollercoaster. Photograph: Minecraft
Rollercoasters are lots of fun and making a Minecraft one is fairly straightforward, using mine carts and powered rails. Spice it up a bit by adding a theme: dinosaurs, ancient Rome, deep space – whatever you fancy. It does take a bit of practice to wind a rollercoaster up and around a landscape using well-placed redstone blocks for power, but that’s half the fun.

Facebook ‘disappointed’ in Australia’s attempt to make tech giants pay for content | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook has said it is “disappointed” in the Australian government’s attempt to extract millions of dollars from tech giants to pay for media content shared through search and social media.
But on Monday the treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, vowed the Australian government “won’t bow to … threats” from tech giants not to show local content describing the coming stoush with Google and Facbeook as a “battle worth fighting”.
The Australian government has opted for a mandatory code of conduct to distribute revenue to media companies because the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had concluded “no meaningful progress” had been made on payment for content in negotiations for a voluntary code.
The ACCC chair, Rod Sims, told ABC TV that, when the government asked for a view about a week ago, the competition regulator advised progress on value-sharing or paying for content “seemed unlikely”.
He cited “the experience overseas”, particularly Spain and France which “passed various laws to get Google and Facebook to pay for content and [they] have basically said ‘the amount we’re willing to pay is zero’”.
Frydenberg and the ACCC chair, Rod Sims, explained the compulsory code, to be finalised by July, could see Facebook and Google pay for content either as a proportion of the revenue user attention earns for the tech giants, or a proportion of the cost of the content, such as news.
Fryenberg told reporters in Canberra it was “hard to be specific” about how much the code could raise, but given Australian content is “lucrative for the tech titans” the government expended revenue to be in the millions.
When Spain made payments to publishers mandatory, Google chose to withdraw its Google News service entirely. In France, both Facebook and Google refused to pay for users clicking through to news sites, prompting the French competition regulator to order Google to negotiate with them.
Frydenberg acknowledged that attempts in France and Spain “haven’t been successful” but vowed the Australian government “won’t bow to their threats”.
“This is a big mountain to climb,” he said. “These are big companies that we are dealing with but there is also so much at stake, so we’re prepared for this fight.”
The communications minister, Paul Fletcher, said European regulators had relied on copyright law to extract payments, whereas Australia would use competition law.
Sims said in Spain only Google News had been targeted, not Google search, while in Australia the code would be “broad enough so that it covers the entirety of the relationship”. “And really, both parties need each other.”
Facebook Australia and New Zealand managing director, Will Easton, said the social media giant was “disappointed by the government’s announcement, especially as we’ve worked hard to meet their agreed deadline” for a voluntary code by November 2020.
Easton pointed to a global $100m fund to support journalism during the Covid-19 crisis and $5m in Australia to help news platforms monetise audiences drawn via Facebook as evidence of its support for journalism.
Google, which drove 2bn clicks to Australian news publishers in 2018, has long argued that traffic from the search engine helps publishers monetise content.
A Google spokesperson said it had worked with the news industry to help “grow their businesses through ads and subscription services and increase audiences by driving valuable traffic”.
Google said it had worked constructively with the industry, government and ACCC on the draft code and “we will continue to do so in the revised process set out by the government today”.
Earlier, Fletcher explained the government had intervened because it was a “competition issue” – that local publishers and broadcasters including News Corp, SevenWest and Nine Entertainment are “competing with Facebook and Google … for advertising revenue and attention.
“Competition delivers the best outcomes for consumers but when you have one set of businesses acquiring content from another, without the opportunity for a fair discussion about what they paid for it, then that is why we believe the ACCC needs to get involved.”
Labor welcomed the announcement but said in a statement it was “disappointing that it has taken a global pandemic for this government to find a sense of urgency about the state of Australia’s news media”.
“There is still much to work through before this code of conduct will operate to support the news media, and still much on the media reform to-do list,” the shadow communications minister Michelle Rowland and shadow treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement.

LinkedIn Snapchat-like Stories: Another Attempt at Relevancy? – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Usually, if you’re in any part a member of the corporate or business world you would have probably heard of LinkedIn. If by any chance you haven’t then the website could be explained as a Facebook-esque social media website that is both part interactive CV and part job fair.
The Facebook and social media qualities of the website are in part an attempt by its creators to continue to make LinkedIn a cooler, more social part of the Internet. Features like a wall where you can see the activities of the people you follow (or network with), embedded video support and a chat messaging system are all examples of this transformation.
Now, according to The Verge, LinkedIn is testing a Snapchat-style story feature internally for “a new conversational format” for business conversations.
Pete Davies, LinkedIn’s head of content products, says that the goal is to meet users “where their voices are.” These stories would offer a lighter more casual way of interacting in the business-focused and business-minded sphere in which LinkedIn and its users exist.
Instead of using the messaging system that has been essential for interactions between users and/or businesses, Davies imagines the new stories feature would be used for sharing key moments from work trips or events or small feature videos such as “tips or tricks that help us work smarter.”
This would be LinkedIn’s second attempt at a stories-like feature. In 2018 they tested something in a similar vein called “Student Voices” which allowed college students to post videos to a “campus playlist” featured at the top of the LinkedIn app.
However, where Student Voices was limited in who could use it (students) and what they could post (just videos without filters or other add-ons like the ones offered by Instagram), this new story feature from LinkedIn seems to be approaching from a much broader sense.
For a more cynical perspective, one could view this as another of LinkedIn’s attempts at chasing the relevancy and popularity enjoyed by the social media monsters of today, like Instagram or Snapchat, hoping to shed its dull corporate identity. Previously the company attempted to add Snapchat-esque video filters in 2018, which have been met with apathy from users.
There is also no guarantee that LinkedIn could launch this service after the testing period is finished. However, the company does plan to begin testing in the public in the coming months.
Social Media Stories
First introduced by Snapchat in 2013, the idea of the “stories” feature was then copied shamelessly by Instagram, who brought the feature to new heights. The other all-consuming social media apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and Youtube would join the trend – to the point where the ‘stories feature’ being included in new things became a meme.

Xerox will attempt a hostile takeover of HP Inc. – Blog – 10 minute

A hot potato: Xerox is done playing nice. HP Inc. has twice rejected the company’s acquisition offers in recent months so now, Xerox is taking a hostile approach by nominating 11 new directors to replace HP’s entire Board of Directors at its upcoming annual shareholder meeting.
John Visentin, vice chairman and chief executive officer of Xerox, said HP shareholders have told them that they believe their acquisition proposal will bring tremendous value. It is why Xerox has lined up $24 billion in binding financing commitments and a slate of “highly qualified” director candidates.
“We believe HP shareholders will be better served by a new slate of independent directors who understand the challenges of operating a global enterprise and appreciate the value that can be created by realizing the synergies of a combination with Xerox,” Visentin said.

Xerox in November offered to buy HP for $22 per share, or $33.5 billion, but HP twice rejected the proposal.
HP in a statement said Xerox’s director nominations are a self-serving tactic to advance its proposal, one that significantly undervalues HP and creates meaningful risk to the detriment of HP shareholders.
Xerox’s list of candidates includes former senior executives from some of the world’s leading companies including Hilton Hotels, Verizon, Aetna and United Airlines, just to name a few. Xerox said they were chosen due to their expertise in overseeing company transformations and combinations.
Worth noting is the fact that HP Inc. is much larger than Xerox. As of writing, Xerox has a market cap of just $7.67 billion compared to HP’s $31.91 billion valuation.

India loses contact with spacecraft during historic moon landing attempt – gpgmail

India’s attempt to become the first nation to soft land a robotic spacecraft at the moon’s South Pole, an unexplored region, has ended in failure, the space agency said Saturday.

Less than two miles above the lunar surface, the Vikram lander (named after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space program) lost communications with the mission control.

A live broadcast from ISRO, India’s equivalent of NASA, showed scientists grow tense as the control station struggled to get a signal from the lander.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was watching the landing attempt, offered words of encouragement to the scientists and children, who had accompanied him at the ISRO campus.

“Be courageous. Our faith in ISRO has not lost. I can proudly say that the effort was worth it and so was the journey. We are full of confidence that when it comes to our space program, the best is yet to come,” he said.

Space is hard. The lunar surface is filled with debris of spacecrafts that have attempted and failed to land in one piece. Because there is little to no atmosphere on the moon, parachutes can’t be used, leaving landers to rely completely on thrusters to modulate the speed.

Chandrayaan-2, a roughly $140 million mission, is, in part, intended to study moon craters that are believed to contain water deposits, something Chandrayaan-1 found in 2008.

A successful touchdown would have made India the fourth country to successfully complete a soft landing on the lunar surface. So far, only the former Soviet Union, the U.S., and China have accomplished it.

The 142-foot tall spacecraft that blasted off Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on July 15, carried an orbiter, a lunar lander, and a six-wheeled rover. The lander and rover were expected to operate for just a couple of weeks, but the orbiter, which detached from the lander earlier this week, will continue to operate for at least one year.

ISRO has come a long way and specialized in low-cost space launches since the early 1960s, when components of rockets were transported by bicycles and assembled by hand in the country.

In 2013, ISRO also launched an orbiter to Mars in its maiden $74 million interplanetary mission — a fraction of the $671 million NASA spent for a Mars mission in the same year. In 2017, ISRO also deployed a record 104 satellites into space in just 18 minutes.

Earlier this year, ISRO said it intends to have its own space station in the future and conduct separate missions to study the Sun and Venus. It will begin working on its space station following its first manned mission to space, called Gaganyaan (which means “space vehicle” in Sanskrit), in 2022 — just in time to commemorate 75 years of the country’s independence from Britain. The government has sanctioned Rs 10,000 crores ($1.5 billion) for the Gaganyaan mission.

Watch India’s Chandrayaan-2 make its historic moon landing attempt right here – gpgmail

It’s a big day for India’s highly audacious Chandrayaan-2 mission. The nation will attempt to land its lunar orbit on the moon’s surface shortly as it inches closer to become the fourth in the world to complete a successful lunar landing. ISRO, India’s equivalent of NASA, will be live streaming the landing on its website, and YouTube channel.

Additionally, if you are tuning in from India, dozens of channels including Doordarshan (DD1), Disney India, National Geographic, Star Plus and Star Bharat, DD News, will live telecast the India’s mission to the moon. The landing is scheduled for between 1pm and 2pm Pacific Time (4pm to 5pm Eastern Time; 8pm to 9pm GMT).

ISRO launched its 142 feet tall spacecraft from the the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on July 15. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander named Vikram (named after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space program), and a six-wheeled rover named Pragyaan (Sanskrit for “wisdom”). Earlier this week, the lander that carried the rover detached from the orbiter.

The mission’s budget is just $141 million, significantly lower than those of other countries, and less than half of the recently released blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame.”

Commenting on the landing, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will be watching the nation’s attempt at the moon landing from ISRO’s office, said earlier today that, “India, and the rest of the world will yet again see the exemplary prowess of our space scientists.”

Chandrayaan-2 aims to land on a plain surface that covers the ground between two of the moon’s craters, Simpelius N and Manzinus C — that is about 375 miles from the South Pole. It’s an understudied region that no one has seen closely yet.

NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger, said in a televised program today, “I just want everyone to know that the whole world is following this and it is not just Indians. This is the first time any country is going to the South Pole of the moon! India is leading this and as a representative of the US, we are nervous and we are hoping for success. This increases the knowledge base of the moon.”

The LG G8X Is the Company’s Latest Attempt to Make Dual-Screen Phones a Thing

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Smartphones have basically gotten as large as they can reasonably get without some sort of radical design change. Samsung and Huawei are working with foldable OLED technology to allow phones to transform into tablets, but LG is still pushing the dual-screen design. The new G8X is the latest phone with one of the company’s snap-on Dual Screen accessories. Even with some new design refinements, this is going to be a tough sell.

As you might have guessed, the LG G8X ThinQ is a modified version of the G8 that launched earlier this year. It ditches the silly and almost inoperable motion controls, allowing for a smaller display notch. Inside, it’s a typical 2019 flagship phone with a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. There’s also a headphone jack, which is something of an anomaly these days.

The phone itself isn’t the interesting part; it’s how the phone interacts with LG’s latest Dual Screen case. The 6.4-inch OLED in the phone clocks in at 2340 x 1080 and the case has an identical OLED. This is a change from past Dual Screen accessories which didn’t always match the phone’s display. In fact, the case even has a fake display notch at the top for its non-existent camera. There’s another display on the outside of the Dual Screen case as well. This 2.1-inch monochrome panel lets you quickly check the time and notifications without opening the phone.

Past Dual Screen cases also relied on pogo pins on the back of the phone for connectivity, but this one connects to the phone via the USB Type-C port. LG also says it’s less of a drain on the phone’s battery, which has grown to 4,000mAh from 3,500mAh in the previous G8.

With the Dual Screen case connected, you can run two apps side-by-side on the G8X. Those could be two separate web pages or something more elaborate like a game and a video player. You can even turn the phone into a miniature laptop by pulling up LG’s keyboard app on one screen with an app in landscape on the other.

At this point, you may think this sounds like a good deal. After all, flip cases for phones are not exactly a new idea and plenty of people like them. However, like all LG Dual Screen systems, this thing is bulky at about 15mm thick and 326 grams. For comparison, the Galaxy Fold only weighs 263 grams, and it’s about half a millimeter thicker when closed. App developers need to get on-board to enable advanced functionality, too. LG will have to move a lot of units to have any hope of significant support, and that’s far from a certainty.

LG will ship the G8X ThinQ in the fourth quarter of the year. Specific market availability and pricing will be announced closer to release.

On second attempt, hoverboard inventor successfully crosses Channel – gpgmail

Following a failed attempt in July, French inventor Franky Zapata successfully crossed the Channel on top of a hoverboard this weekend. Starting his trek in Sangatte in northern France, the journey took 20 minutes, before landing in St. Margarets Bay, England.

“For the last five to six kilometers I just really enjoyed it,” Zapata told Reuters and other reports on landing near Dover. “Whether this is a historic event or not, I’m not the one to decide that, time will tell.”

Zapata, a former jet ski racer, developed the Flyboard Air some three years back. On July 14, Zapata took part in France’s Bastille Day military parade, riding the Air. That same month, he attempted the feat a first time, only to fall into the water when attempting to land on a boat-mounted platform in order to refuel.

He stopped again to refuel midway, but did so without incident this time out. Three helicopters were along for the ride and a crowd of dozens of well wishers were on-hand to cheer to him upon landing.

Bellingcat journalists targeted by failed phishing attempt – gpgmail

Investigative news site Bellingcat has confirmed several of its staff were targeted by an attempted phishing attack on their ProtonMail accounts, which the journalists and the email provider say failed.

“Yet again, Bellingcat finds itself targeted by cyber attacks, almost certainly linked to our work on Russia,” wrote Eliot Higgins, founder of the investigative news site in a tweet. “I guess one way to measure our impact is how frequently agents of the Russian Federation try to attack it, be it their hackers, trolls, or media.”

News emerged that a small number of ProtonMail email accounts were targeted this week — several of which belonged to Bellingcat’s researchers who work on projects related to activities by the Russian government. A phishing email purportedly from ProtonMail itself asked users to change their email account passwords or generate new encryption keys through a similarly-named domain set up by the attackers. Records show the fake site was registered anonymously, according to an analysis by security researchers.

In a statement, ProtonMail said the phishing attacks “did not succeed” and denied that its systems or user accounts had been hacked or compromised.

“The most practical way to obtain email data from a ProtonMail user’s inbox is by compromising the user, as opposed to trying to compromise the service itself,” said ProtonMail’s chief executive Andy Yen. “For this reason, the attackers opted for a phishing campaign that targeted the journalists directly.”

Yen said the attackers tried to exploit an unpatched flaw in third-party software used by ProtonMail, which has yet to be fixed or disclosed by the software maker.

“This vulnerability, however, is not widely known and indicates a higher level of sophistication on the part of the attackers,” said Yen.

It’s not known conclusively who was behind the attack. However, both Bellingcat and ProtonMail said they believe certain tactics and indicators of the attack may point to hackers associated with the Russian government. For instance, the attack’s targets were Bellingcat’s researchers working on the ongoing investigation into the downing of flight MH17 by Russian forces and the use of a nerve agent in a targeted killing in the U.K.

Higgins said in a tweet that this week’s attempted attack likely targeted “in the tens” of people unlike earlier attacks attributed to the Russian government-backed hacker group, known as APT 28 or Fancy Bear.

Bellingcat in the past year has gained critical acclaim for its investigations into the Russian government, uncovering the names of the alleged Russian operatives behind the suspected missile attack that blew up Malaysian airliner MH17 in 2014. The research team also discovered the names of the Russian operatives who were since accused of poisoning former Russian intelligence agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in a nerve agent attack in Salisbury, U.K. in 2018.

The researchers use open-source intelligence and information gathering where police, law enforcement and intelligence agencies often fail.

It’s not the first time that hackers have targeted Bellingcat. Its researchers were targeted several times in 2016 and 2017 following the breach on the Democratic National Committee which saw thousands of internal emails stolen and published online.

A phone call to the Russian consulate in New York requesting comment was not returned.
