Assassin’s Creed Valhalla among 13 games announced for Xbox Series X | Games – Blog – 10 minute

Microsoft has revealed 13 games coming to its Xbox Series X console when the machine launches this winter. In an hour-long presentation, streamed live on Thursday, the company announced that well-known titles such as the recently announced Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as well as Madden NFL 21 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, will all be on Xbox Series X.
Also featured was Paradox Interactive’s vampire adventure, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. Codemasters presented its racer DiRT 5 complete with impressive lighting and mud splatter effects, and an option to run it in 4K at 60 frames-per-second or in a lower resolution at 120fps. Namco Bandai showed a new anime-style sci-fi thriller named Scarlet Nexus, about a group of psychic law enforcers.
The rest of the games were from independent studios: futuristic first-person action shooter called Bright Memory Infinite, which is already coming to PC; supernatural horror game The Medium from Blair Witch creator Bloober Team (with music by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka); a 1930s puzzle adventure named Call of the Sea from Swedish indie publisher Raw Fury; space combat shooter Chorus from Deep Silver; cyberpunk action-RPG The Ascent from Curve Digital; Second Extinction, a three-player co-op dinosaur shooter from Systemic Reaction; and finally, Scorn, a first-person horror adventure set in a sinister Giger-esque dream world developed by Serbian team, Ebb.
The games will support the key technical features of the Xbox Series X such as 120-frames-per-second animation, real-time ray tracing and super-fast loading times. Nine of the titles, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, will support Microsoft’s new Smart Delivery technology, which will allow players to buy one version of the game that will then run on either Xbox One or in an optimised format on Xbox Series X.

Speaking during the livestream, Ashraf Ismail, creative director on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla said, “Assassin’s Creed has always been committed to new technologies to push the experiences. To have incredibly fast loading times means we can create a game that’s much more immersive. Norway and England are living worlds and to push their potential has been wonderful.”
Microsoft has also confirmed that all 15 of its first-party studios are working on Xbox One X projects, but did not show footage during the stream. During the stream, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Studios, announced that gameplay would be revealed from July, including Halo Infinite.
An exact launch date for the next generation console is yet to be confirmed beyond “Holiday 2020”. A price is also yet to be revealed.
With major gaming events cancelled around the world, the company has announced that it will be running a series of monthly online news livestreams titled Xbox 20/20, showing trailers and developer interviews.
A blogpost published to Microsoft’s Xbox Wire site said: “Hundreds of titles are already in development for Xbox Series X thanks to our amazing partner community.
“We’ll be sharing a lot more in the coming months in our Xbox 20/20 series, not only from those partners but from Xbox Game Studios as well.”

You can play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for free this weekend – Blog – 10 minute

Something to look forward to: If you’re one of the millions stuck indoors this weekend, Ubisoft has a way of passing the time that costs nothing. The French gaming giant is making Assassin’s Creed Odyssey free-to-play from tomorrow—Thursday, March 19—until Sunday, March 22.
Odyssey is arguable the best Assassin’s Creed game to date. Set in Greece in 431 BC, it has much more of an RPG focus than previous AC titles, containing dialogue options, branching quests, and multiple endings. Almost two years after release, it remains an excellent, beautiful game, and will last over 80 hours if you see and do absolutely everything—and that’s without the DLCs, which aren’t included in the trial.

All the progress made during the weekend will carry over to the full game, should you decide to purchase it after the free period ends. And if you need another reason to buy, Odyssey is discounted by 75 percent for a limited time.
An extra bonus for everyone who plays Odyssey this weekend is the unlockable (via the Ubisoft Club) Ezio’s Roman Set costume, which is essentially the outfit worn by Ezio in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.

The free trial will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game can be preloaded on the PC and PS4 starting today, and those on Xbox will need an active Xbox Live Gold subscription to access the freebie. Ubisoft also noted that PS4 players would have trophies disabled during the free weekends.
With the coronavirus forcing so many people to socially isolate inside their homes, Steam broke its concurrent user record over the weekend, surpassing 20 million users. The virus has also seen Pornhub give away free premium subscriptions to those in lockdown in Italy, and ISPs have suspended data caps and promised not to penalize customers for missed payments during the outbreak.

The Epic Games Store is giving away Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate this week – Blog – 10 minute

Why it matters: As per usual, the Epic Games Store’s free giveaways change this week. Along with card game Faeria, users can get their hands on Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate for absolutely nothing, starting from February 21 up until the 28th.
AC: Syndicate is certainly an improvement over the much-maligned AC: Unity. And while it pales in comparison to Origins and Odyssey, exploring Victorian London can be fun, as you lead your gang and fight to grow your influence.
Syndicate is $29.99 on Steam, where it has a ‘Very Positive’ rating, so it’s definitely worth grabbing from the Epic Games Store if you’ve never played it before.

The other free title this week is Faeria, which is described as having “a unique living board” and being “the only card game where you can gain all 300 cards in less than 50 hours.” It also has a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam, where it’s $24.99, meaning you can save yourself $55 if you download both games from Epic.
While free game giveaways tend to include some less than stellar offerings, there have been plenty of quality titles handed out by Epic. You can download Kingdom: Come Deliverance for nothing up until February 20. The open-world RPG was one of our previous Best PC Games (You Should Be Playing), thanks to its great story and atmosphere.
Last month we learned that the Epic Games Store had attracted 108 million users within its first year. They spent $680 million over the course of 2019, $251 million of which was dedicated to third-party PC games. The company gave away 73 free titles totaling $1,455 in value that were claimed more than 200 million times.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey gets an educational mode — complete with quizzes – gpgmail

In my review of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, I was blown away by the authenticity and level of detail in the game world. The game itself — well, it was fine. But the highlight was ancient Greece in all its classical splendor, and a new educational Discovery Tour mode aims to teach the history of that society through a gaming lens.

The free update, available now to anyone who owns the game, adds dozens of historical “tours” guided by a NPC, in which you can learn about the cities of ancient Greece, the life and crafts of the people who lived there, what they believed and how they were governed, and of course the many famous battles of the era.

It’s an expanded version of a similar feature created for Assassin’s Creed: Origins, which was set in ancient Egypt. It seemed wasteful then, as in Odyssey, to create such a rich world and just have you stab your way through it. Obviously others at Ubisoft felt the same way, especially Discovery Mode director Maxime Durand, who says he envisioned a feature like this a decade ago.

And how could you not with the Assassin’s Creed series? From the very first one players were immersed in a painstakingly recreated period of history that gave variously accurate but always compelling experiences of really living in that bygone era. All the work that went into making it convincing can easily — well, perhaps not easily, but directly — be applied to educating the player as well as thrilling them.

And quizzing them! The end of each guided tour will have an optional live quiz-type chat with the guide, which Ubisoft assures players will be fun and not for a grade. I’d probably skip it myself. But history teachers will probably make you do it for extra credit or something.

There are 30 discovery sites, each with its own tour and modern-day context, so for example an artist in-game may explain how they sculpt, but then you’ll also see a museum artifact showing the process in “real life.”

Here’s hoping the history lessons are a little less lenient on the topic of slavery than some of the quests were.

“I think learning is a lot about agency… as soon as someone tells you you have to learn about something, there’s some of the fun taken away from it,” said Ubisoft’s Alicia Fortier. “So if we look at learning as play and as exploring, we need to make sure players can focus on what’s interesting to them and then they’ll naturally get more curious.”

The Discovery Tour update is free for all players today. Go, learn something.

Netflix’s ‘Wu Assassins’ is a punching, kicking delight – gpgmail

When we reviewed “Another Life” last week, we described it as an old-fashioned science fiction space show, something that’s been absent from TV for the past decade or so. “Wu Assassins” is another new Netflix series, and it’s also is a kind of a throwback — this time to ’90s martial arts series like “Vanishing Son” and “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.”

As we explain in the latest episode of the Original Content podcast, “Wu Assassins” — which tells the story of Kai, a San Francisco chef who receives mystical powers and must battle powerful nemeses known as the Wu Lords — has plenty of delightfully cheesy writing and special effects. But it’s set apart from those older shows in a couple key ways.

First, there’s the fact that Indonesian martial arts star Iko Uwais (who you might recognize from “The Raid” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) plays as Kai — he’s not a great dramatic actor, but once the action starts, he becomes a blur of punches and kicks.

The producers have surrounded Uwais with other other accomplished martial artists, so the resulting fight scenes are extraordinary. “Wu Assassins” includes a couple big set pieces, but even more remarkably, every single fight (and there are plenty) feels like it’s been choreographed for the perfect mix of beauty and brutality.

Even better, there’s Byron Mann’s performance as Uncle Six, a ruthless triad boss who has a long history with Kai. Mann brings real charisma and humanity to his performance, and he turns his dramatic scenes with Uwais into absolute highlight of the show. Plus, he’s just as compelling when he’s called upon to beat the crap out of his enemies.

In addition to praising “Wu Assassins,” we also discuss the CBS-Viacom merger and listener response to our review of “Another Life.”
