Is the Global Pandemic an Opportunity to Reimagine Urban Development in Africa? | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from SA Commercial Prop News.

The need for social distancing and better sanitation could leapfrog development of African cities into a more sustainable future.
This is according to Duncan Bonnett, Director of Market Access & Research at Africa House, and research partner of exhibition organiser Messe Muenchen South Africa. He says that, while Africa’s architects and planners have long been pushing for greener, smarter better designed urban spaces, the COVID-19 pandemic may help fast-track moves to better living spaces.
New opportunities arise from disruptions
Speaking ahead of the bauma CONEXPO Africa trade show, Bonnett says “The pandemic has certainly caused delays and disruptions across construction and infrastructure development, but there are some silver linings for the sector, and for Africa as a whole.”

These, he says, included a new need for the realignment of developments such as commercial and hospitality spaces, the reconfiguration of retail developments and the reimagining of towns and cities.
“We could see redevelopment and remodelling of spaces, the development of new warehousing and logistics hubs as e-commerce really takes off; and the growth of retail distribution infrastructure closer to outlets and consumers,” Bonnet says.
“Another opportunity lies in the complete redevelopment of urban spaces in South Africa and across Africa.”
“The pandemic is highlighting how difficult it is to maintain safe social distancing and ensure water and sanitation for townships and informal settlements, for example. This is an opportunity for investors, governments and private sector to reconfigure how Africa lives – reimagining housing, green spaces, sanitation, power, and the work environment to ensure that both urban and rural spaces are resilient to disruption such as pandemics.”
Urban areas in Sub-Saharan Africa have been growing exponentially
The growth of urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa has accelerated in recent years and this growth is expected to pick up over the next 15 years, according to Bonnet.
“Donors, investors, governments and developers have been striving to improve living environments, but COVID-19 may sharpen minds around a more coordinated approach to developing sustainable, safe settlements.”
“In the same way as much of Africa leapfrogged telephony progress and went direct to smartphones, we now have an opportunity to develop new urban areas that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and resilient to disruption. This shock to the system could push us in the right direction to develop better integrated, smarter cities.”
Bonnett says Africa has much to learn from international best practice and pan-African forays into sustainable cities and infrastructure.
“This is the time to have the conversations and stimulate thinking around how we do this. Events like bauma CONEXPO Africa can play a key role in creating the linkages and getting processes going, so that the future-proof, sustainable African city is not just a theoretical concept.”
Suzette Scheepers, CEO of Messe Muenchen South Africa says new approaches, technologies and construction materials can underpin Africa’s efforts to reimagine urban development. “Despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic, development will continue, and new opportunities will emerge across the continent.”

Huawei to Launch 3 New Gadgets in South Africa | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Huawei has announced that it will be launching a total of three new gadgets to its South African market – the Huawei Watch GT 2e smartwatch, the Huawei Y6P smartphone and the Huawei Matepad T8 tablet.
The devices will be officially unveiled during Huawei’s first-ever livestream sale, taking place at 7pm SAST on 1 July 2020.
Here’s a closer look at the new contenders in Huawei’s lineup:
Huawei Watch GT 2e
This smartwatch is the latest addition to Huawei’s popular Huawei Watch GT 2 Series and is designed to inspire an active lifestyle. Supported by two-week-long battery life, the device supports precise heart rate monitoring, abnormal heart rate reminders, pressure level monitoring and sleep monitoring features that allow users to understand their health status in real-time.

For the first time, Huawei has introduced a blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring feature to the Huawei Watch GT 2e, which is key for these times when the focus is on respiratory health.
The Huawei Watch GT 2e also sports a new take on smartwatch design. Instead of following traditional designs where the watch face is separated from its strap, it has a classic round dial with an integrated strap for a streamlined, modern look. The multi-functional watch face allows the user to customise the settings they want with more than 200 watch faces to choose from.
Huawei MatePad T8 Tablet
The new Huawei MatePad T8 tablet is said to satisfy an increasing demand for affordable family tablets. This feature-packed tablet sports a slim, lightweight design, yet is robust enough for use by all family members.
Powered by an advanced octa-core chipset, and housing a large 5100mAh battery, the Huawei MatePad T8 tablet provides everything users need for hours of uninterrupted entertainment and education. The battery gives the user up to 12 hours of local 1080p video playback at a time.
The 8-inch display is just a little smaller than an A5 sheet of paper. Weighing just 310g, it is super convenient to pop into a bag on the go between work meetings or to take out in a café. With a high 80% screen-to-body ratio, no space is wasted giving an immersive visual experience.
The Huawei MatePad T8 tablet offers a dedicated area for kids, the Kids Corner, where the parents can set a password for the kids to access educational content. To promote healthy device use, the Kids Corner includes four eye protection modes – blue light filter, posture alerts, bumpy road alerts, eBook mode – to provide a more comfortable experience.
Huawei Y6p
The Huawei Y6p offers an impressive package for an affordable price. One of its best features, though, is its large 5000mAh battery, making it a phone targeted at users who need up to 32 hours of video playback or even 20 hours of surfing on a single charge.
Huawei says that the Y6p can also function as a power bank to charge other devices and even act as backup storage for other devices.
The Huawei Y6p is fitted with a 13MP Triple Camera, which consists of a 13MP main camera, a 5MP wide-angle camera and a 2MP depth camera. Upfront the Huawei Y6p also packs an 8MP front camera with advanced beautification algorithms for gorgeous selfies.

Huawei’s Child-friendly MatePad T8 Now Available in South Africa | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

As many parents continue to keep their young ones at home, children are beginning to adapt to digital technologies at an exceedingly rapid rate. The days of colouring-in books have now been replaced by tablets and interactive face-to-face classes with teachers have morphed into engaging online lessons.
This change seems to be almost seamless for today’s technologically astute children, whose only impediment to truly embracing a digitally transformed way of learning and playing is a lack of the right tools. Today, tablets need to adhere to a variety of criteria in order to truly benefit today’s youth, as well as their families. Devices need to be durable, light, powerful, and of course – fun.
With this in mind, Huawei has launched the MatePad T8 – a feature-packed tablet that comes in a lightweight design. It has a massive screen-to-body ratio of over 80 per cent, making the most of the compact form factor to provide a large display area for kids and parents. Powered by an octa-core chipset and housing a large 5100 mAh battery, the MatePad T8 provides everything kids need for hours of uninterrupted entertainment and education.
MatePad T8 parental controls

One of the greatest demands when it comes to tablets has been for a feature that enables parents to track and limit their children’s usage time of a device, so as to prevent their young ones from indulging in copious, unbroken amounts of screen time. The Huawei MatePad T8 makes determining a crucial digital balance easy thanks to the built-in Kids Corner.
Kids Corner is a virtual playground that children can explore without adult supervision. The platform not only aims to create an exclusive learning and entertainment space for children but also ensures that parents can easily monitor their child’s tablet usage – without having to hover over them 24/7.
With the MatePad T8, users can simply open Parental Controls in Kids Corner to find the four control modules – eye protection, time management, app management, and content management. These features are designed to help children develop healthier, more sustainable technology habits. Settings can be easily modified to limit the number of times a day and for how long your child is allowed to use his or her tablet, as well as enable rest periods.
Screen time limits
Users can also establish what apps and media are accessible at different times, which can be used effectively to help ease children into a daily routine. To promote healthy device usage, the Kids Corner includes four eye protection modes – blue light filter, posture alerts, bumpy road alerts, and eBook – to provide a more comfortable user experience.
The HUAWEI MatePad T8 is priced at R2,999 and is available on Huawei’s online commerce store, Vodacom, MTN, Cellucity, Telkom, Incredible Connection, Makro and Game from 1 July.

Tech is Essential in Developing a Flourishing Agriculture Sector in Africa | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Getty Images.

Africa should be in a great position to feed itself and play a significant role in feeding about nine billion people by 2050. For this to be realised, however, significant reforms have to be made to leverage the current standing optimally.
The World Economic Forum reports that the African continent has 65% of the uncultivated arable land left in the world and creates about 60% of the continent’s employment. Africa boasts a wide diversity of agro-ecological zones, heavy rain-forest vegetation with bi-annual rainfall to relatively sparse, dry and arid vegetation with low uni-modal rainfall is positioned to be a World’s supplier of Agricultural produce.
With these factors at play, it is difficult to find that Africa is still stuck with the burden of being a net food-importing region, spending $35 billion annually, according to the African Development Bank. It is a great concern that major parts of the continent’s populations still live in rural areas under extreme poverty conditions.
It goes without saying that the fundamentals need to be in place and an understanding that the differences in the agro-ecological zones imply diversity and that there are no universal solutions to agricultural development problems across the continent. However, universally, massive developments of subsistence farmers, addressing the land ownership issues across the continent, developing skills as well as enabling access to funding and markets are seemingly consistent across the board.

Beyond this AgriTech, driven by technologies such as drought management, crop protection and yield enhancement, can also contribute substantially to employment and wealth creation as well as to the improvement of health and nutrition on the continent. Modern Agriculture can also attract the youth into the industry ensuring the sustainability of food supply.
Africa can do it and can learn from strides made by countries like India. In the 60s and early 70s, India was a food importer. It took three years for India to be a gigantic food supplier to the world by simply a strong political will and driving transformative reforms.
Africa then needs to avoid importing goods. This is not a taboo approach, but a policy that was once adopted by the Latin American countries when they were also developing. Not only Latin American countries, but South Africa during the apartheid day’s in particular when it faced boycotts from the international economy had to consider import substitution and developed the capacity to manufacture certain goods and products domestically.
When goods and products, for instance, are imported, more employment opportunities are created from the countries where the goods and products are manufactured and this comes at the expense of your own people because they are not involved in the production work.
Technology is key in helping to drive growth in the industry and development of rural infrastructure is a key enabler to catalysing the industry to new levels. Africa has been challenged by driving rural connectivity due to the scale of the investments required for minimal returns.
However, the traditional commercial models need to be reviewed as well as the participation of the private sector encouraged. The rapid pace of growth in the use of drones, automated tractors, artificial intelligence, robotics and blockchains, albeit sporadic, are transforming agriculture. Smart farming and technological innovations are boosting productivity, but more education, connectivity and funding are required.
In South Africa, for example, there’s a Tempemail Broadband Project called SA Connect which is currently underway with an objective of connecting rural schools and hospitals. Agriculture, as a result, has an opportunity to benefit from the massive infrastructure development.
Additional to it are moves being made to avail the much-needed spectrum for cost-effective deployment of connectivity in the rural communities. The bold moves made by South Africa in the recent publication at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium South Africa (SIDSSA), which commit to investments in infrastructure for Agriculture and Agro-processing for about $1,64bn is a strategic move which recognises the importance of the Industry in driving growth. Additionally, the Government’s focus on recapitalising the Land Bank is a good move which will encourage growth and funding of the industry.
It is also important to recognise the strides that have been made in country reforms which have paid off and should be a blueprint of what success looks like. To mention a few, Ethiopia and Rwanda’s rapid and material reductions in the level of malnutrition is worth recognition. Ethiopia has been pursuing agricultural led industrialization (ADLI) strategy in the past two decades believing that investing in agriculture and increase in land yields to be preconditions for successful industrialization, urbanization and development.
Agriculture in Ethiopia accounts for 36.3% of the GDP and continues to contribute meaningfully to the economy. In Rwanda, the Government has targeted agriculture as the main engine of economic growth, implementing transformational policies that foster increased agricultural productivity since independence. The results are tangible and impactful in the fight against poverty.
Further up in the North West of Africa, Senegal has made some commendable strides in the transformation of the rice sector, by successfully integrating mechanical tools and technologies into the rice value chain in the Senegal River Valley. 46% of the Senegalese population is employed in the agriculture sector, albeit still a lower contribution to GDP.
Tunisia’s transformation over the past five years into the foremost global exporter of olive oil accounting for around 40% of the world’s organic olive oil production. Tunisia’s agricultural sector won the Special Prize of the Best Performance for 2020 in the 33rd African Union Summit held on February 9-10 2020 in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. The prize is awarded to countries which have been able to implement the Malabo Declaration on the Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods in Africa.
All these strides were achieved through the integration of technology in the value chains. It goes without saying that technological innovations in Agriculture are crucial for developing productivity and scale, while at the same time optimising yield and reducing waste.

MTN Records 100 Million Active Users Across Africa | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from The Techie Guy

Access to the Internet has the power to change lives and bridge inequalities. With this in mind, MTN Group has announced that has reached a significant milestone by recording 100 million active data users on its networks across Africa and the Middle East.
“We believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life,” says MTN Group president and CEO, Rob Shuter. “We are delighted to have connected 100 million of our customers to the power of the Internet as we have increased data coverage and reduced the cost to communicate across our markets.”
MTN has a total base of more than 257 million customers in 21 markets. Growth through scaling data and digital services is central to its strategy. The group is overcoming the barriers to greater mobile internet adoption by extending its 3G and 4G coverage, accelerating smartphone adoption and transforming prices.
In the past three years, well over 100 million more people in MTN’s footprint have been covered by its data network. This brings the group’s network coverage for data services to beyond 480 million people. However, about 60% of rural populations in Africa remain unconnected. To benefit from connectivity, they need affordable devices as well as digital literacy to easily access relevant and meaningful content.

To support smartphone adoption, in 2019 MTN distributed 675 000 affordable data-enabled handsets across 12 markets. It also launched a digital literacy programme in nine markets, helping over three million people improve their understanding of the mobile internet and applications.
Data affordability is also key. In 2018 and 2019, MTN reduced entry-level data rates across its footprint by 60%. In 2019 alone, it cut the effective data price per megabyte by 34%.
“We believe the consumer mobile data market will grow enormously over the next few years,” continues Shuter. “The COVID-19 pandemic has served to accelerate the adoption of mobile data, digital services and financial services. As a result, we have recorded increases of up to 50% in data volumes in some markets, as work and studying from home becomes a reality for many.”
“Over time our ambition is to grow our customer base to 300 million and for at least 2/3 to be accessing the power of the Internet on an MTN network – so the 100 million achieved today marks the halfway mark in the MTN journey.”

Unique Health Platform Could Benefit 800 Million Mobile Subscribers in Africa | Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Sourced from Redbubble and iStock.

“With this platform, we have the possibility of reaching between 600 million and 800 million mobile subscribers in Africa,” says Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), during the virtual launch of the Africa Communication and Information Platform for Health and Economic Action (ACIP) on 23 June 2020.
ACIP is a mobile-based tool for two-way information and communication between citizens and governments. It furnishes national and regional COVID task forces with user-generated survey data and actionable health and economic insights that will enable authorities to better analyze pandemic-related problems and implement appropriate responses.
Dr John Nkengasong, Director of Africa CDC says the platform offers a “unique opportunity to change the way we conduct disease surveillance, enhance our ability to acquire good and timely data, and make all Africans count.”

The launch was presided over by President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo who lauded the initiative and noted that it “responds to member states’ requests for assistance in collecting and processing essential data to respond effectively to COVID-19”.
President Alpha Condé of Guinea pledged to “make sure that all 55 AU member states are part of this initiative (ACIP).” He says the uncertainties around COVID-19 make a strong case for Africa to speedily embrace the fourth industrial revolution, ensuring better internet access and affordability.
Songwe deplored the state and high cost of Internet access in Africa stating, “In an era of pandemic and economic crisis, it’s even more difficult for people to spend the little resources they have to pay for access.”
The good news, however, is that while the ECA is working with key stakeholders to solve the problem of internet access, reliability, and cost, the ACIP can already reach over 80% of Africa’s mobile users without adding the burden of cost on them.
“We, as operators, can waive the charges for USSD because chances are that many people battling the pandemic in some rural areas may not have airtime,” says Robert Shuter, CEO of MTN. He says the uniqueness of the ACIP initiative got MTN and its “competitors to agree that this was an area for collaboration and cooperation.”
Shuter says the technology can be used on any handset and on any device and that the platform “presents a very simple menu to users and enables us to collect very important information that policymakers can use to identify where the issues and hotspots are.”
The launch was also attended by African ministers in charge of ICT who urged stakeholders to ensure that there were synergies between the ACIP and efforts being made in the area of digital technology to combat COVID-19 at national levels.
ITU’s Secretary-General, Houlin Zhao, called on African regulators and ICT ministers to “back this new platform.” He says artificial intelligence and big data are at the heart of the ACIP and that the support of telecommunication regulators from each country is “absolutely needed.”
Thirty-six African member states are already part of the initiative. The platform will also allow COVID-taskforces to deploy health and economic resources to mitigate the pandemic’s impact.
Boutheina Guermazi who heads the World Bank’s Digital Development Global Practice says she was heartened to see “the speed with which Africa reacted to create this platform,” bringing together major stakeholders on the continent to take advantage of mobile big data analytics.
“We know that accurate and up-to-date information on aggregated anonymised mobility patterns could clearly be used for monitoring, predicting outbreaks, and planning future activities,” she says.
Lacina Kone, CEO Smart Africa described the ACIP as “one of the digital initiatives we believe will transform Africa.” He praised the ECA for its role in bringing together Africa’s major mobile operators, regulators, and governments on a single platform.
“The year 2020 should be a year we embrace and accelerate collaboration through digital transformation. It should go down in history as a technological, health and economic turning point for Africa,” says Kone.
Songwe urged Africa’s youth to “work with us” to design artificial intelligence systems and platforms that can be curated to get better data and help identify and “ensure that the informal sector becomes part and parcel of an active economic tissue of our continent.”
She thanked the ITU, Smart Africa, the African Union, the World Bank, WHO, MTN, Orange, Safaricom, Vodacom, Airtel, and all stakeholders for contributing to the project.

Sourced from Getty Images.

Mobile data traffic in Sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to grow by 12 times the current figures with total traffic increasing from 0.33 Exabytes (EB) per month to 4EB by 2025.
At the same time, average traffic per individual smartphone is expected to reach 7.1GB over this period 5-year period as well.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, LTE accounted for around 11% of subscriptions in 2019. Over the forecast period, mobile broadband subscriptions are predicted to have a massive increase, reaching 72% of mobile subscriptions.
LTE share will reach around 30% by the end of the forecast period, and LTE subscriptions are set to triple, increasing from 90 million in 2019 to 270 million in 2025. In terms of 5G penetration, discernable volumes of subscriptions are expected by 2022, expected to reach 3% by 2025.

According to the Guardian Nigeria, the report shares that the driving factors behind this growth include a young and growing population with increasing digital skills and more affordable smartphones.
Fadi Pharaon, president of Ericsson for the Middle-East and Africa, says that “Technology brings an unprecedented opportunity to address the challenges of sustainable economic development and improve the livelihood of people in Africa.”
“The latest edition of Ericsson’s Mobility Report highlights Africa as one of the fastest-growing mobile markets and reiterates the need for a more efficient technology, higher data rates and availability of ample spectrum. The Report highlights as well the importance of mobile and fixed networks as key components of critical national infrastructure to sustain and evolve emerging economies during remote work times.”
On the value of digital infrastructure, Ericsson noted that the spread of COVID-19 during the first part of 2020 impacted all parts of society globally, including the telecommunications sector. The Mobility Report takes an incisive look at the role of networks and digital infrastructure in keeping societies running in Africa, and families connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The global pandemic has had a substantial impact on people in many countries and their daily lives, consumers, says the report, have been leaning on resilient networks during this time. In a recent study conducted by Ericsson Consumer Lab, 83% of the respondents from 11 countries around the world claim that ICT helped them a lot to cope with the lockdown.
ICT services such as e-learning and wellness apps have seen significantly increased adoption and usage.

Sourced from Getty Images

The University of Witswatersrand has announced that South Africa’s first COVID-19 vaccine trial is set to begin, with participants to be enrolled by the end of the week.
“This is a landmark moment for South Africa and Africa at this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter winter in South Africa and pressure increases on public hospitals, now more than ever we need a vaccine to prevent infection by COVID-19,” Professor of Vaccinology at Wits University and Director of the South Africa Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit, Shabir Madhi, says in a virtual briefing.
This new trial aims to find a vaccine that will prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is the virus that causes COVID-19.
“We began screening participants for the South African Oxford 1 COVID-19 vaccine trial last week and the first participants will be vaccinated this week,” he adds.
The trial comes after South Africa recorded 101,590 positive cases on Monday night, and a further 61 deaths, taking the death toll to 1 991.

Implementation of the trial
According to Madhi, the participants will form 3 groups.

Group One, which will comprise 50 people who are HIV negative;
Group Two, comprising 1 900 participants who are HIV negative; and
Group Three, comprising 50 people living with HIV.

The 1 950 participants, aged between 18 to 65 and who are HIV negative, should not have tested positive for COVID-19 and should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, nor have previously participated in a trial involving an adenoviral vaccine or received any other coronavirus vaccine, writes News 24.
50 participants living with HIV are to be enrolled in the trial in order to examine the safety and how well they respond to the vaccine. In addition, participants will need to provide written informed consent to participate in the trial and they will remain on the trail for about one year.
“Our best-case scenario is that we would have an answer [on the outcomes] for this particular vaccine by the end of the year,” Madhi added. The trial is set to cost around R150 million ($8.7 million).
The trial itself
Half of the participants will receive the ChAdOx1 COVID-19 (ChAdOx1-Cov19) vaccine and the other half (the control group) will receive a placebo (saline solution). Participants will also receive an e-diary to record any symptoms they experience over 7 days since being given the vaccine. They will have to record any symptoms and how they feel for a further three weeks.
Following vaccination, the participants will then go through a process of follow-ups where researchers will check participants’ observations, review the completed diaries, and take blood samples, which will be used to assess the immune response to the vaccine.
Reaction by South Africa’s Department of Health
The Tempemail Department of Health has pledged its support stating that the trial could not have come at a better time.
“South Africa must always lead from the front, there would be no better time than today to actually launch this vaccine trial as the country has reached a landmark of over 100,000 infections recorded last night,” Director-General, Dr Sandile Buthelezi says.
