StockX admits ‘suspicious activity’ led to resetting passwords without warning – gpgmail

StockX, a popular site for buying and selling sneakers and other apparel, has admitted it reset customer passwords after it was “alerted to suspicious activity” on its site, despite telling users it was a result of “system updates.”

“We recently completed system updates on the StockX platform,” said the email to customers sent to gpgmail on Thursday. The email provided a link to a password reset page but said nothing more.

The company was only last month valued at over $1 billion after a $110 million fundraise.

Companies reset passwords all the time for various reasons. Some security teams obtain lists of previously breached passwords that make their way online, scramble them in the same format that the company stores passwords, and find matches. By triggering the reset, it prevents passwords stolen from other sites from being used against one of a company’s own customers. In less than desirable circumstances, passwords are reset following a data breach.

But the company admitted it was not “system updates” as it had told its customers.

“StockX was recently alerted to suspicious activity potentially involving our platform,” said StockX spokesperson Katy Cockrel. “Out of an abundance of caution, we implemented a security update and proactively asked our community to update their account passwords.”

“We are continuing to investigate,” said the spokesperson.

We asked several follow-up questions — including who alerted StockX to the suspicious activity, if any customer data was compromised, and why it misrepresented the reason for the password reset. We’ll have more when we know it.

Throughout the day customers were tweeting screenshots of the email, worried that their accounts had been compromised. Others questioned whether the email was genuine or if it was part of a phishing attack.

“Did they get hacked, find out somehow, and then to cover it up send out that email and ask for a password change?” one of the affected customers told gpgmail.

Customers were given no prior warning of the password reset.

StockX founder Josh Luber kept with the company’s line, telling a customer in a tweet that the password reset was “legit” but did not respond to users asking why.

StockX tweeted back to several customers with a boilerplate response: “The password reset email you received is legitimate and came from our team,” and to contact the support email with any questions. We did just that — from our gpgmail email address — and heard nothing back hours later.

Security experts expressed doubt that a company would reset passwords over a “systems update” as StockX had claimed.

Security researcher John Wethington said it is “rare” to see security overhauls that require password resets. “You wouldn’t just send out a random email about it,” he said. Jake Williams, founder of Rendition Infosec, said it was “bad communication” in any case.

Several took to Twitter to criticize StockX for its handling of the password reset.

One customer called the email “fishy,” another called it “suspicious,” and another called on the company to explain why they had to reset passwords in this unorthodox way. Another said in a tweet that he asked StockX twice but “refused to provide an answer.”

“Guess I’m closing my account,” he said.

Ice Lake Benchmarks Paint a Complex Picture for Intel’s Latest CPU

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Intel dropped a lot of Ice Lake news today, including an embargo lift on performance data concerning the new CPU. ExtremeTech was not aware that Intel had held a testing event in which reporters from various sites were invited to benchmark Ice Lake under controlled conditions and did not include this data in our initial coverage earlier today. We have reached out to Intel to clarify the situation, given that we were on hand at Architecture Day last winter to report on the initial Ice Lake CPU architecture and have covered Intel’s foundry research and developments for the past eight years.

Now that we actually know what CPU performance factually looks like, we’ve got a much better basis for discussing it relative to Intel’s Whiskey Lake. Our sister site PCMag has done a thorough comparison of Ice Lake against Whiskey Lake, with the Core i7-8565U represented in multiple form factors and systems from different OEMs. That’s actually incredibly useful because it shows just how large the gap between laptops can be, and how important proper testing (and thermals) are.

We’re going to excerpt benchmarks from the PCMag article and highly recommend you read the full story for that publication’s in-depth analysis. Let’s start with Cinebench R15:

657639-intel-ice-lake-cpu-tests-cinebench-r15

Right off the bat, we can see that Ice Lake has some issues in a 15W envelope. The fact that the CPU’s single-threaded performance improves by 1.22x when given room to breathe in a 25W design is evidence that CPU power consumption is throttling the core badly. There’s only a 5 percent spread between the Core i7-8565U machines as far as single-thread is concerned. When we move to multi-threading, giving the CPU 1.66x more thermal headroom results in a 1.33x improvement in performance. Comparing 15W with 15W, the older Intel CPUs are all faster, particularly the HP Envy 13.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce

In the 25W configuration, ICL wins the benchmark overall but is only 5 percent faster than the HP Envy 13. The Ryzen 5 2500U is outperformed (PCMag did not have a Ryzen 7 to compare against or an updated 3000-series APU in a mobile system).

POV-RAY shows some very interesting performance figures, in part because they’re completely different from the Handbrake distribution. The HP Envy 13, which was the fastest Core i7-8565U in Cinebench R15, is the slowest system in Handbrake (apart from the Pentium Gold, which doesn’t really count for our purposes). The Zenbook 13 is a whopping 20 percent faster than the 15W ICL testbed, though that system’s performance is on par with the Spectre X360 and Envy 13. Giving the CPU 25W to play with instead of 15W improves performance by about 24 percent, allowing ICL to beat past its rivals.

There are other results for the CPU-side available at PCMag and I’d look at them for a more complete picture. What we see in aggregate is that a 15W power envelope is a tight fit for the 10th Gen CPU family. Sometimes ICL is a bit faster than the 14nm Whiskey Lake CPUs, sometimes it’s slower, but we don’t see much evidence of improvement in the lower power envelope.

At the same time, however, we also see substantial variation in 14nm Core i7-8565U results. This isn’t surprising; Intel started giving OEMs more freedom to design SKUs back when Core M debuted, but all systems are not created equal. Certain laptops may be noticeably faster than others in certain circumstances. We recently talked about how increased variation in silicon performance explains many of AMD’s decisions around 7nm and the company’s Ryzen 7 products. This is a variation of a decidedly different sort, but that’s actually the point. Silicon companies have begun to design around variance in many ways because simply annihilating it has proven either prohibitively expensive or downright impossible.

That addresses the CPU component of Ice Lake. What about the GPU? Here, the news is much more positive.

In Rise of the Tomb Raider Low, ICL can maintain 40fps at 1366×768 and 26fps at 1920×1080. Interestingly, giving the system more headroom for power took the score down, not up at 768p and held it constant in 1080p. AMD’s lower-end Vega 8 does not compete well here, and while Vega 11 would provide some additional GPU headroom, it’s unlikely to completely close the gap. Only the MX150 and MX250-equipped laptops, with Nvidia GPUs,SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce beat out Intel’s integrated graphics.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege is impressive, with equal performance between the 15W and 25W CPUs. Again, only the MX150 and MX250 exceed Intel’s integrated performance. AMD’s Vega 8 turns in playable performance at 1366×768 but doesn’t meet the minimum 30fps threshold we consider minimum for 1080p gaming.

All of the GPU figures basically follow this pattern. You’ll see AMD hold its ground better in some than others, but Intel is ahead on the whole. Vega 11 would improve these results, but likely not by enough to change the outcome in most games.

Implications and Conclusion

In our earlier coverage written today, I implied that one reason for Intel’s lower CPU clocks might be because Intel used a larger amount of TDP to provide GPU performance. While there’s probably some truth to this, the 15W-25W performance pattern is different for CPUs compared with GPUs. Moving from 15W to 25W almost always improves CPU performance. Moving from 15W to 25W improves synthetic GPU benchmark performance on ICL, but has a weaker impact on actual games. Only World of Tanks enCore appears to respond strongly to the additional TDP headroom, suggesting that in most cases, that additional wattage isn’t going to the GPU — it’s being used to accelerate the CPU.

Gains for Ice Lake relative to Whiskey Lake are fairly anemic, though this can vary dramatically depending on which Whiskey Lake system you own now. When there’s a 10-15 percent variance between different systems equipped with the same processor, that’s obviously going to impact how ICL compares. Overall, we’d say Ice Lake is comparable to Whiskey Lake — sometimes faster, sometimes slower, but rarely dramatically distinguishing itself one way or the other.

The GPU improvements, on the other hand, are enormous. Assuming that the Ryzen 7 3700U and 3500USEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce are a relatively modest improvement on their predecessors, AMD will need to have 7nm APUs in-market to take ICL on. We have no timeline on when that may happen. Of course, AMD is currently focused on the desktop and server spaces, which means we don’t even know when Intel’s 10nm silicon will face off against AMD’s 7nm in-market.

The third pillar is power consumption and battery life, and we don’t know yet how ICL compares on these metrics; Intel forbid testing the sample laptop for such things. Right now, Ice Lake delivers massive improvements in one area, settles for small gains to small losses in another, and offers an unknown level of improvement in the third. Gamers who want some ability to play on thin-and-lights should be the major beneficiaries of the improvements we’ve seen thus far. If this performance holds, AMD will either need to hit back at Intel on 7nm or see its long domination of the integrated mobile GPU market finally fall — which isn’t honestly a sentence I used to think I’d ever type.

DoorDash is buying Caviar from Square in a deal worth $410 million – gpgmail

DoorDash has reached an agreement with Square to purchase on-demand food delivery and catering business Caviar . DoorDash has agreed to pay Square $410 million in cash and preferred DoorDash stock.

Square bought Caviar about five years ago in a deal worth about $90 million. Now, Caviar has found a new home with DoorDash, the on-demand delivery startup that had been under fire for months regarding how it pays its delivery workers. DoorDash finally did right by its workers just last week.

“Today’s announcement is another important step forward on our mission to empower local economies,” DoorDash CEO Tony Xu (pictured above) said in a statement. “We have long-admired Caviar, which has a coveted brand, an exceptional portfolio of premium restaurants and leading technology. The acquisition further enhances the breadth of our merchant selection, enabling us to offer customers even more choice when they order through DoorDash. We look forward to welcoming the Caviar team to DoorDash and expanding our partnership with Square in the future.”

With Caviar joining DoorDash, Square’s Caviar lead, Gokul Rajaram, along with all the other Caviar employees will join DoorDash once the acquisition closes. The deal is expected to close sometime this year.

“Caviar has built a trusted brand with customers and many of the best restaurants,” Rajaram said in a statement. “DoorDash has national scale, complementary restaurant selection, a tremendous logistics platform, and a team that shares our passion and commitment to better serve restaurants, couriers, and customers. I’m incredibly excited to be joining, with the rest of the Caviar team, to help build the future of local commerce.”

For Square, this deal provides the company with an opportunity to focus more on its products for businesses and individuals, Square CEO Jack Dorsey said.

“We are increasing our focus on and investment in our two large, growing ecosystems — one for businesses and one for individuals,” Dorsey said. “This transaction furthers that effort, and we believe partnering with DoorDash provides valuable and strategic opportunities for Square.”

Meanwhile, Square just reported its Q2 2019 earnings with net revenues of $1.17 billion (44% y/o/y growth), adjusted revenues of $563 million (46% y/o/y growth) and a net loss of $7 million.

Planetary Society Declares Success as LightSail 2 Sails on Sunbeams

Rockets are great if you want to get someplace fast, but there’s something whimsical about sailing on a beam of light. The Planetary Society has declared its LightSail 2 mission a success after it did just that. The satellite deployed its solar ail last week, and now it has successfully maneuvered in space without the help of engines.

The Planetary Society launched its spacecraft aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in late June, which carried numerous other spacecraft into space. It took a decade of development for the organization to get LightSail 2 ready, and individual donations from some 50,000 supporters funded almost all of the $7 million price tag.

Last week, The Planetary Society announced the craft had successfully deployed its sail. That was a problem for the first version of the spacecraft, which suffered from communication issues when it headed to the edge of space in 2015. It never got its sail deployed before falling back into the atmosphere. However, that mission was never intended to actually use the sail. LightSail 2 was more ambitious from the start.

A light sail uses a large reflective surface area to harness the thrust from photons hitting the sail. LightSail 2 has a surface area of almost 30 square meters (322 square feet), but the thrust is still tiny. The Planetary Society reports that LightSail 2 enjoys forward propulsion equal to the weight of a paperclip when its mylar sail is facing the sun. Over time, that small speed boost can build up in the vacuum of space.

A rocket would obviously be able to accelerate much faster, but LightSail 2 doesn’t need to explode out of the starting gate. At the lowest point in its orbit (perigee) the sail points directly at the sun, adding a little more speed to its orbit. That pushes the top of the orbit (apogee) higher. The Planetary Society now confirms the probe has raised its orbit by 1.05 miles (1.7 kilometers) using only sunlight.

The team will continue raising the probe’s orbit for about a month until the perigee drops into the atmosphere and generates enough drag to outweigh the solar sail thrust. During this time, scientists will work to refine the solar sail, particularly how the craft’s momentum wheel works to keep the sails pointed at the sun.

The Planetary Society doesn’t have any current plans to build a third solar sail spacecraft. However, it will make its technology available to future exploration missions that may want to use solar sails.

Bridgewater’s Ray Dalio is the wise uncle you wished you had – gpgmail

“I don’t want more success. I don’t want more money.” When most hedge fund managers say something like that to you, you’d be justified in suspecting that they’re giving you their carefully crafted Davos riff.

Because unlike many Silicon Valley billionaires who believe (or sort of believe) in the transcendence of their mission, the motives of the Wall Street titan are often straightforward: it’s about the money, and when the money gets huge, it’s about building a legacy.

But as Ray Dalio looked me in the eyes recently and said those words, I believed in his sincerity. That’s not to say he won’t earn enormous sums more. In fact, last year, the financial press widely reported that Dalio earned in the ten figures thanks to Bridgewater’s flagship Pure Alpha fund posting stellar returns.

But when you spend some time with Dalio and broach the various topics in which he has rarefied expertise, it’s apparent that today, the world’s most famous hedge funder could care less about ascending the ranks of the world’s megarich or in achieving more glory or praise for himself.

Although Dalio has diverse philanthropic interests, he retains a very hands-on role as co-CIO of Bridgewater, where he cuts an imposing figure as a guy with little time for inefficiency or nonsense. But he also wears his heart on his sleeve as he seeks to spread the word about principles-based decision-making and the coming paradigm shift that he says will have a dramatic impact on our economy and the markets.

The gospel of hyperrealism

By adhering to the twin pillars of radical transparency and radical truth-telling, Dalio believes that the idea meritocracy that powers Bridgewater can be replicated by the home-gamer. Are some of the specific principles that Bridgewater abides by controversial and harsh (e.g., Beware of the impractical idealist, Don’t expect people to recognize and compensate for their own blind spots, Use “public hangings” to deter bad behavior)? Yes. Does he care if you don’t buy into them? Not really:

TESS Finds Potentially Habitable Super-Earth Just 31 Light Years Away

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has only been scanning the skies for about a year, but it has already identified several new candidate exoplanets. As astronomers were working to confirm one recent sighting, they happened upon something unexpected. That solar system, known as GJ 357, hosts not one but three exoplanets. What’s more, one of those planets is a super-Earth in the habitable region of the star.

TESS uses the transit method to spot exoplanets with its array of cameras, similar to the dearly departed Kepler satellite. It can scan multiple stars at the same time, watching for the telltale dips in light that indicate an exoplanet has passed in front of its host star. That’s what TESS saw in GJ 357, which is only 31 light-years away. To confirm the existence of the exoplanet dubbed GJ 357 b, astronomers used ground-based telescopes to measure the star’s radial velocity. This alternative method looks for tiny changes in light caused when a star “wobbles” in response to the gravity of orbiting planets.

The team confirmed GJ 357 b, but they also found two more exoplanets now known as GJ 357 c and GJ 357 d. GJ 357 is a small M-type dwarf star, which is 40 percent cooler than the sun. GJ 357 b orbits the star in just 3.9 days and is 22 percent larger than Earth. The surface equilibrium temperature (a measure of solar radiation only) is 490 degrees Fahrenheit (254 degrees Celsius), ruling out life as we know it. GJ 357 c is a bit farther out, but still too hot for life. It’s 3.4 times as massive as Earth and orbits ever 9.1 Earth days. The temperature here is 260 degrees F (127 degrees C).

Astronomers are most interested in GJ 357 d, which sits near the outer edge of the system’s habitable zone with a 55.7-day orbit around the star. It’s 6.1 times more massive than Earth, meaning it could be rocky or gaseous. If it’s a rocky planet, it would be about twice as large as Earth.

According to the team, GJ 357 d has an equilibrium temperature of  -64 degrees F (-53 degrees C). That sounds too low to be even potentially habitable, but this is only a measure of solar radiation. Earth’s equilibrium temperature is -1 degree F (-18 degrees C), but the atmosphere increases the surface temperature. GJ 357 d gets about as much solar radiation as Mars, and a sufficiently dense atmosphere could allow liquid water to flow on its surface. Astronomers around the world plan to take a closer look at this nearby super-Earth over the coming years.

Which immigration headlines should you care about? – gpgmail

Foreign-born tech workers shouldn’t panic — or bury their heads in the sand

Newsflash! President Donald Trump is planning to deport naturalized U.S. citizens, force H-1B visa holders to return to their home countries, and revoke the green cards of lawful permanent residents. He also wants to deport the Dreamers and evict millions of other immigrants from the country. Or wait — maybe he’s planning to increase visas for skilled workers, open the door to foreign-born researchers, protect DACA recipients, and — for an encore — bar himself from the United States.

Feel like you’ve got whiplash yet? Welcome to the nerve-wracking world of U.S. immigration policy — a strange place at the best of times but one made all the more confusing by the weaponization of immigration issues for political gain and the media’s continuing failure to cut through the spin.

Tech workers are better prepared than most to cope with a torrent of torrid immigration headlines, continuously amplified and distorted by Twitter rumors, Slack chatter, and credulous Facebook reposts. Still, the sheer volume of immigration news makes it hard to know what to pay attention to — and with 71 percent of Silicon Valley’s techies born outside the United States, this isn’t simply a theoretical problem. If you, your loved ones, colleagues, or staff are immigrants, then you need to learn to separate the signal from the noise.

Amazon says U.S. government demands for customer data went up – gpgmail

Amazon said the U.S. government asked more data from the company during the first-half of 2019 than on the previous six-month period.

The latest figures landed in the company’s transparency report, published quietly on its website late Wednesday, said the number of subpoenas it received went up by 14% and search warrants went up by close to 35%.

That includes data collected from its Amazon Echo voice assistant service, its Kindle and Fire tablets, and its home security devices.

Amazon turned over some or all data in about four out of five cases, the figures show.

But the number of other legal demands Amazon received were down slightly.

The company’s cloud business, Amazon Web Services — which makes up the bulk of Amazon’s annual operating income — also reported separately a 77% increase in the number of subpoenas it received for cloud-stored customer data, but a decline in received search warrants.

Per reporting rules set out by the Justice Department, Amazon said it received between 0 and 249 national security requests, for both consumer and cloud services.

Amazon was one of the last major tech companies to issue a transparency report, despite mounting pressure from privacy advocates. The company eventually buckled, releasing its first set of figures several days after whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked highly classified documents which revealed mass surveillance by the U.S. National Security Agency and its global intelligence counterparts.

The company said at the time and continued to maintain until recently that it “never participated” in the NSA’s so-called PRISM program, which allowed the government to obtain data from Apple, Google, Microsoft, and several other tech companies.

But gpgmail noticed that Amazon removed that wording from its transparency report pages several weeks ago.

When reached, an Amazon spokesperson said that the change was “simply because it was a somewhat dated reference.”
