Nintendo shows off exercise-powered RPG for Switch, Ring Fit Adventure – gpgmail

Nintendo has been at the crossroads of video games and fitness since the famous Power Pad for the NES, and the Switch is the latest to receive a game powered by physical activity: Ring Fit Adventure. And it actually looks fun!

In the game, you’ll jog in place to advance your character, and perform various movements and exercises to avoid obstacles and defeat enemies. Your quest is to defeat an “evil body-building dragon” who has disrupted the peaceful, apparently very fit world of the protagonist. Sure.

The game comes with a pair of accessories: a ring and leg strap, each of which you slot a Joy-Con into. The two controllers work together to get a picture of your whole body movement, meaning it can be sure you’re keeping your arms out in front of you when you do a squat, and not phoning it in during leg raises.

The ring itself is flexible and can tell how hard you’re squeezing or pulling it— but don’t worry, it can be calibrated for your strength level.

Interestingly, the top button of the controller appears to be able to be used as a heart-rate monitor. That kind of came out of left field, but I like it. Just one more way Nintendo is making its hardware do interesting new things.

ringfit2

There look to be a ton of different movements you’ll be required to do, focusing on different areas of the body: upper, lower, core and some sort of whole-body ones inspired by yoga positions. Ingeniously, some enemies are weak to one or another, and you’ll need to use different ones for other scenarios, so you’re getting a varied workout whether you like it or not.

Meanwhile, your character levels up and unlocks new, more advanced moves — think a lunge instead of a squat, or adding an arm movement to a leg one — and you can get closer to the goal.

ringfit3

There are also minigames and straight-up workouts you can select, which you can do at any time if you don’t feel like playing the actual game, and contribute to your character’s level anyway.

The idea of gamifying fitness has been around for quite a while, and some titles, like Wii Fit, actually got pretty popular. But this one seems like the most in-depth actual game to use fitness as its main mechanic, and critically it is simple and easy enough that even the most slothful among us can get in a session now and then at our own pace.

Ring Fit Adventure will be available October 18 — no pricing yet, but you can probably expect it to be a little above an ordinary Switch game.

You can watch the full-length walkthrough of the game below, but beware — the acting is a little off-putting.

Nintendo Files Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Another Large ROM Site

Nintendo owns some of the most iconic intellectual property in games, and it’s taking a stand against ROM sites. After securing a win against two major ROM distributors, Nintendo has set its sights on another website called RomUniverse. Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the owner of RomUniverse seeking millions of dollars in damages and demanding that the site shut down.

According to the legal filing, RomUniverse is one of the largest unauthorized distributors of Nintendo games. It also seems to be a particularly brazen enterprise, featuring a Nintendo-themed background and paid memberships (a one-time $30 fee) that allow users to download as much content as they want. Without the membership, you can only download three items per week. RomUniverse also hosts movies and ebooks, and these are direct downloads. At least torrent sites have the advantage of not storing infringing files on their servers.

Nintendo points to numerous examples of infringing content including ROMs for the current-gen Switch consoleSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce and older systems like the 3DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and NES. Simply having ROM files isn’t illegal, but it’s something of a gray area. You’re probably in the clear if you make backups of games you already own. However, making those ROMs available for download is just asking for trouble, and Nintendo is famously strict about the use of its IP.

The company’s lawsuit seeks $2 million in damages for trademark infringement across the site plus $150,000 per infringing file. That’s where the damages would really stack up. There are thousands of Nintendo ROMs on the site. Just the selection of Switch titles would push the damages into the tens of millions. In addition to damages, Nintendo demands that the website operator shut down the site and transfer ownership to Nintendo.

It has been just over a year since Nintendo filed a lawsuit against LoveROMS.com and LoveRETRO.co, both of which were owned Jacob Mathias. By late 2018, Mathias had agreed to a $12 million settlement with Nintendo. The sites temporarily went offline shortly after Nintendo filed suit, and later became apology pages. They are now completely offline. The fact that RomUniverse is still online and serving pirated games suggests the owner won’t be so quick to surrender. We could be looking at a more drawn-out case.

Nintendo Switch Online gets SNES games September 5, plus new SNES controllers – gpgmail

Nintendo Switch Online, the subscription-based online services component of Nintendo’s Switch console, will get SNES games starting on September 5 – yes, that’s right, the first game are available to play tomorrow. There are 20 games available initially, with more planned in future.

Alongside the new software, there’s also the new SNES system wireless controller for Switch, which charges via USB-C and retails for $29.99 directly from Nintendo.

The launch lineup for the SNES portion of Nintendo Switch Online looks pretty promising, and includes highlight favourites like Star Fox, Breah of Fire, F-Zero, Super Mario World and Super Metroid (you can see full list below).

We got a strong indication that this was happening earlier this month, thanks to an FCC fiing that detailed the SNES controller hardware. Nintendo likewise released an NES controller alongside its launch of the Nintendo Online Service when it debuted last year.

The best part about this surprise drop is that it’s available basically right now – check your Nintendo Online app on your Switch tomorrow to begin playing these nostalgic gaming classics.

Mario Kart Tour arrives on iOS and Android on September 25 – gpgmail

Nintendo’s next mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, will be available on iOS and Android devices starting on September 25. The official Twitter account for the game revealed the launch date, and shared the pre-registration link where users of both platforms can sign up to get the game when it launches.

The mobile instalment of Nintendo’s incredibly popular cart racing franchise was originally announced last year, and at that time had a planned launch window of sometime before the end of March 2019. Nintendo later updated that date to sometime during this summer, in order to “improve [the] quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch,” according to a statement in one of the game-maker’s earnings reports.

September 25 is actually technically after the end of summer, the last day of which is officially on September 23, but it’s pretty close. Nintendo also released Dr. Mario World earlier this year, so it’s been a busy year for the company in terms of launching mobile adaptations of its popular franchises.

Mario Kart Tour had a closed beta in the U.S. and Japan, which was Android-only, earlier this year. Details from the beta include a look at the rather expansive roster, as well as a lot of in-game purchase mechanics that might frustrate fans of the main series.

The New Nintendo Switch Delivers Vastly Improved Battery Life

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The new, barely changed Nintendo Switch has finally hit the market. It hasn’t been clear what benefits end-users could expect from this new revision of the console — data pointed to better battery life, but not much more than that as far as overall improvements were concerned. Now we’ve got an idea what improvements the new console delivers. Sometimes manufacturers sneak in improvements that aren’t widely played up beforehand, but that’s (mostly) not the case here.

Digital Foundry took the new Switch for a spin and finds that Nintendo lived up to their promises as far as battery life is concerned. Overall system longevity is vastly improved and power consumption has been cut nearly in half, from 13.3W to 7W while playing Breath of the Wild.

Digital-Foundry-Switch-Tests

Image and data by Eurogamer

Battery life at half brightness is now 1.64x better, while full-brightness battery life is 1.78x better. Switching from full brightness to 50 percent brightness improves Switch battery life by 1.17x, for those wondering what the impact of the screen setting is. Overall temperatures are not much reduced — the heat off the internal SoC is 50C instead of 54C. However, DF notes that the Switch is also physically quieter than before, implying that Nintendo may have reduced the fan RPM, choosing to limit noise as opposed to keeping equal cooling and therefore further reducing temperature.

One known reason for the improved battery life may be changes to the display. There are reports that Sharp provided an IGZO panel for the Switch Lite, but it isn’t clear if this covers the new Switch modelSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce as well. However, the display is definitely different, with a magenta tint and an off-white background color compared with the OG Switch.

As for performance, the two devices are almost equivalent. I say almost because, while average frame rates wind up in pretty much exactly the same places on both consoles, there are some specific spots where performance is improved. Digital Foundry has more details on this. Outside of some corner cases, however, overall performance is the same.

Customers who want to try and pick up the newer model with better battery life should look for a console labeled HAC-001(-01) as opposed to HAC-001. Nintendo’s guidance is slightly different, however, indicating that the new Switch will start with a “HAD” label rather than “HAC.” That’s official guidance from the company, so it’s possible that the old HAC-001(-01) / HAC-001 split was for the Asia-Pacific market, and Western consoles will have a different label.

It has not been formally confirmed whether the new Switch is using a Tegra X1 chip built on a more advanced process node, but we suspect it is. The new Switch uses the same size battery as the old Switch. While screens are major drivers of power consumption, the Switch uses a comparatively low-resolution display to start with. While changing the displayed resolution of a panel does nothing to change how much power it consumes, the absolute number of pixels in the display does impact overall power consumption. Android Authority did a comparison of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL earlier this year and calculated out the impact of 1440p versus 1080p on power consumption after taking the XL’s larger battery into account. Using a 1080p panel instead of a 1440p panel increased battery life by 1.1x at the same battery capacity.

Since the Switch uses a lower-resolution panel to start with, we wouldn’t expect the panel technology alone to account for a gain this large, but details will have to wait for a formal device teardown. There’s no sign of a fix for JoyCon drift — this problem continues to hit Switch owners, though Nintendo now offers a free repair program for affected customers. There’s also no secondary improvements, like the better Wi-Fi, improved 3D effects, NFC support, or other improvements that Nintendo introduced with the New 3DS relative to the 3DS, but Nintendo also isn’t trying to position this like a major console update. The entire idea is that customers with the newer variant get better battery life, but nobody should feel left behind if they don’t have the latest edition.

At a Glance: 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+ Review

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

In the last few years, nostalgic video game devices like Nintendo’s NES Classic and Sony’s PlayStation Classic have been all the rage. It’s clear that many adult gamers today want to recreate the gaming experience they had as children, but buying a shrunken down game system isn’t the only way to do this. 8Bitdo’s SN30 Pro+ gaming controller ($49.99) was designed to mimic the look and color scheme of the class SNES controller, but with a few modern additions to make it easier to use on today’s games.

Design

If you used to own a Super Nintendo back in the 1990s, then the SN30 Pro+SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce will instantly look familiar with you, and yet distinctively unfamiliar. It’s almost as though someone took the original and glued handles and a couple of thumbsticks onto it. This gives it the appearance of something halfway between an NES controller and one of Sony’s DualShock controllers. The controller also has two trigger buttons that the original SNES model lacked.

These added buttons and thumbsticks are key to the success of this gamepad. The original SNES controller worked well for its time, but modern games simply utilize more buttons and multiple thumbsticks are essentially a must for 3D games.

Usage and Gameplay

Despite having a similar configuration to Sony’s DualShock controller, the SN30 Pro+ is not compatible with any of Sony’s game consoles. It is compatible with Nintendo’s Switch, however, and it also can connect to PCs, Macs, and Android devices using Bluetooth or a USB cable.

8Bitdo includes a software utility that allows you to remap the buttons to support various games. It also supports a somewhat rare feature that gives you granular control over the triggers and analog sticks.

PCMag reported in their review of this device that its the first time they have seen a sub-$100 controller that has this feature. The reviewer at PCMag also indicated that the controller worked nearly perfect in the games that he tested and that the direction buttons on the SN30 Pro+ were superior to the ones on Nintendo’s Joy-Cons. The controller’s vibration is apparently weaker than the Joy-Cons, but the reviewer went on to say that the controller worked perfectly with solid vibration when used on a PC.

Conclusion

8Bitdo retails the SN30 Pro+ for $49.99. At this price point and with its reportedly excellent performance, the SN30 Pro+ is well worth considering if you need a new controller for your PC or Nintendo Switch. It’s significantly less expensive than buying a new set of Joy-Cons, which retail for $69.99. Nintendo’s Switch Pro Controller also retails for $69.99, and while it is on sale for $62.06, it’s simply can’t stand up against the $49.99 SN30 Pro+.

SNES controller for Switch shows up in FCC filing, hinting at SNES games for Nintendo Online – gpgmail

Nintendo looks set to release wireless SNES controllers for the Nintendo Switch, which likely means it’ll also be bringing classic SNES titles to its Nintendo Online virtual gaming library. The news comes via an FCC filing (hat tip to Eurogamer) , which includes a diagram of what looks very clearly to be the backside of a Super Nintendo-style wireless controller.

The diagram includes a model number that uses the ‘HAC’ code that Nintendo employs to designate Switch accessories, and past history suggests that the arrival of retro-inspired hardware for the Switch also means throwback games are on their way. Nintendo launched wireless NES controllers for the Nintendo Switch in September, and they arrived alongside NES games delivered via Nintendo Online as free perks for subscribers.

The FCC filing is more or less concrete proof that Nintendo intends to release something, but the rest is speculation (if very likely, informed speculation) at this point. Still, it seems inevitable that Nintendo bring its SNES library to the Switch, especially since it did so for the Wii Virtual Console before.

Sony Will Likely Raise PlayStation Prices If Chinese Tariffs Increase

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The US and China have been engaged in a trade war for months now, but the two nations have thus far managed to avoid a new round of mutual escalation. While the United States has threatened to raise tariffs on a range of Chinese goods from 10 percent to 25 percent, the Trump Administration hasn’t actually done it yet. According to Sony’s Senior General Manager of Finance Department and Corporate Planning, Naomi Matsuoka, the company may have no choice but to raise console prices in the United States if the tariffs go through.

In the quote below, the reference to “Level four” tariffs refers to the fact that this would be the fourth set of tariffs imposed by the United States in the ongoing trade dispute. These are typically referred to as “tranches” (a tranche is defined as “a portion of something, especially money”). Tranche 4 tariffs are expected to impact $250B worth of Chinese goods if they go into effect. Tranches 1-3 previously covered goods collectively worth $250B, so the 4th tranche represents a substantial expansion in terms of the number of goods to be tariffed, as well as a significant increase in the tariff amount.

Sony-Earnings

When asked about the potential impact of tariffs on Sony’s PS4SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce business, Matsuoka responded with the following:

Well supposing hypothetically, the Level four tariffs are actually decided, so this is based on the assumption that it will take place up to the — it’d be up to the timing of that as well as the specific conditions attached. But supposing — and we are not currently assuming that, but if this is actually invoked, what will be the impact? What we are foreseeing is that in Game & Network Services, hardware business will be affected… higher tariffs on these products will actually impact distribution and employment and consumers in the United States will be a negative for the U.S. economy as such.

So our subsidiary are working with the industry associations and government associations, approaching the government where we have sent the opinion leaders to the government. And as of now, we are of course contemplating these actions based on the potential risk for Level four and for all the products affected, for instance the changing of the production sites or passing through of the prices to the market or changing the continuous sales structure.

So, we are considering risk ahead of the current actions if this happens. And once the decision is made to introduce Level four, all the contributing actions will be put to force to mitigate the negative impact.

Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony have all previously asked the Trump Administration not to raise tariffs on consoles, noting that the machines are largely built in China and that moving their supply lines would be difficult to impossible. That may be true for some companies more than others, however, as Nintendo has already said it’s moving production of the Switch Mini to Southeast Asia to avoid potential tariff entanglements. It’s also possible that it’s easier with some product lines as opposed to others — Sony and Microsoft may have long-term production contracts on the PS4 and Xbox One that are difficult to break, or the two companies may face short-term problems with supply chains and the associated costs of setting up shop in a new location.

As for the actual trade negotiations themselves, there has been a little movement on that front. China said three days ago that it would begin larger purchases of some farm products and the US and China trade delegations met on Wednesday, July 30 for several hours. The meetings did not resolve any outstanding issues, however, and the ongoing trade war continues with “No deal in sight” according to the New York Times. The White House called the talks “constructive,” while the Chinese state news media characterized the talks as “frank, efficient, and constructive.”

This was the first formal meeting of the two sides since talks fell apart three months ago. President Trump has tweeted that there may be little chance of a trade deal before the 2020 election is complete. If the Tranche 4 tariffs actually go into effect, we may see the impact on consoles from multiple manufacturers and different product generations, depending on whether Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo can secure a waiver. The trade talks will resume again in September.

Nintendo Switch Lite Now Available for Pre-Order on Amazon

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo’s cheaper switch has been rumored for months, and the gaming powerhouse finally took the wraps off the device a few weeks ago. The Switch Lite trims $100 off the Switch’s price tag and loses a few features. Still, the Switch Lite is expected to sell like hotcakes, and you can secure a unit right now. Amazon has pre-orders live for all Switch Lite variants, including the limited edition Pokémon version.

The Switch Lite has most of the features that made the Switch a massive success. It runs all the same games as the original Switch. The biggest difference is the lack of removable Joy-Cons. Instead, the Switch Lite is a single piece of hardware with controllers built into the body. So, some games that integrate motion controls will play a bit differently on the Switch Lite. It should play those games the same otherwise — the Lite has the same Tegra X1 chip as the more expensive Switch.

The display is slightly smaller LCD at 5.5-inches versus 6.2 on the old Switch. However, Nintendo has made the screen bezel match the body color of the Switch Lite, and it comes in some fun shades — all of them are available for pre-order on Amazon. There’s an understated gray if that’s your speed. There are also turquoise and yellow variants. Finally, there’s the light gray special edition for Pokémon: Sword and Shield. It has blue and pink controls and sketches of the new mascot Pokémon from the game.

Amazon also offers bundles of all those colors with microSD cards. That’s a must-have for all Switch owners as the console itself has just 32GB of storage. Most new games are available as cartridges as well as on the eShop, and it’s easier to grab things from the shop.

All four versions of the Switch Lite are $199.99.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce The gray, turquoise, and yellow consoles launch on September 8th. The Pokémon version comes out on November 8th. Keep in mind, the new Switch Lite doesn’t support docked mode. So, any accessories you might have for docking an original Switch will go unused if you decide to get the handheld-only Lite.

Analogue’s Mega Sg is the Sega Genesis Mini alternative for the discerning retro gaming fan – gpgmail

The official Sega Genesis Mini is coming in September and hopes to capitalize on some of the retro gaming hype that turned the Super Nintendo and NES Mini Classic editions into best-sellers. But there’s already a modern piece of hardware out there capable of playing Sega Genesis games on your HDTV — plus Mega Drive, Master System and Sega CD, too.

The Analogue Mega Sg is the third in a series of reference-quality, FPGA-based retro consoles from Analogue, a company that prides itself on accuracy in old-school gaming. It provides unparalleled, non-emulated gameplay with zero lag and full 1080p output to work with your HD or even 4K TV in a way no other old-school gaming hardware can.

For $189.99 (which is just about double the asking price of the Sega Genesis Mini), you get the console itself, an included Master System cartridge adapter, an HDMI cable and a USB cable for power supply (plus a USB plug, though, depending on your TV, you might be able to power it directly). The package also includes a silicon pad should you want to use it with original Sega CD hardware, which plugs into the bottom of the SG hardware just like it did with the original Genesis. It includes two ports that support original wired Genesis controllers, or you can also opt to pick up an 8bitdo M30 wireless Genesis controller and adapter, which retails for $24.99.

Like the Nt mini did for NES, and the Super Nt did for SNES before it, the Mega Sg really delivers when it comes to performance. Games look amazing on my 4K LG OLED television, and I can choose from a variety of video output settings to tune it to my liking, including adding simulated retro scaliness and more to make it look more like your memory of playing on an old CRT television.

Sound is likewise excellent — those opening notes of Ecco the Dolphin sounded fantastic rendered in 48KHz 16-bit stereo coming out of my Sonos sound system. Likewise, Sonic’s weird buzzsaw razor whine came through exactly as remembered, but definitely in higher definition than anything that actually played out of my old TV speakers as a kid.

Even if you don’t have a pile of original Sega cartridges sitting around ready to play (though I bet you do if you’re interested in this piece of kit), the Mega Sg has something to offer: On board, you get a digital copy of the unreleased Sega Genesis game “Hardcore,” which was nearly complete in 1994 but which went unreleased. It’s been finished and renamed “Ultracore,” and you can run it from the console’s main menu as soon as you plug it in and fire it up.

Analogue plans to add more capabilities to the Mega Sg in the future, with cartridge adapters that will allow it to run Mark III, Game Gear, Sega MyCard, SG-1000 and SC-3000 games, too. These will all be supported by the FPGA Analogue designed for the Mega Sg, too, so they’ll also be running natively, not emulated, for a true recreation of the original gaming experience.

If you’re really into classic games, and care a lot about accuracy, this is definitely the best way to play Sega games on modern TVs — and it’s also just super fun.
