Even Civilization VI Has a Battle Royale Mode Now

You’d have to be living under a rock with no internet connection to be unaware of how popular battle royale-style games have become. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was the first major success in this genre, but then there was Fortnite, which has gone on to be the most popular game in the world. Now, every game seems to have a Battle Royale mode, even games that don’t need them. Case in point: Civilization VI. The latest update to the game adds a new mode called Red Death, a 12-player battle royale.

Civilization VI is the latest entry in the long-running strategy franchise, initially launched in 2016. Like past games in the series, Civilization VI puts you in the shoes of a great leader, guiding a civilization from ancient times into the modern era. Along the way, you have to battle barbarians, establish a culture, spread religion, and hold off the advances of hostile civilizations elsewhere on the map. This all takes place in the framework of a turn-based game, which makes the move to battle royale rather perplexing.

In this game mode, you take control of a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. That may seem like an unusual setting, but many Civ games end with one or more players dropping nuclear weapons on the others. Oddly, it’s often Gandhi.

You don’t have any leader characters or fancy city districts in Red Death. You start the game with one civilian, one infantry, and one machine gun, and the goal is to grow your faction and crush all the others. So, Red Death is almost all about combat (still turn-based), whereas the regular game mode could include almost no combat if that’s the way you want to play.

The goal is to become the last remaining faction, at which time you can hitch a ride on a spaceship that’s taking survivors away from the burnt husk of Earth. As with other battle royale games, the playable area shrinks over time, driving everyone toward the center of the map.

It’s not an entirely new game, but there’s a surprising amount of content with all the new factions and rules. The publisher probably could have sold this as an add-on for a few dollars, but it’s free. Red Death is available to anyone who has the core Civ VI game, so the two expansion packs and numerous leader add-ons are not required.

Nintendo Files Multi-Million Dollar Lawsuit Against Another Large ROM Site

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo owns some of the most iconic intellectual property in games, and it’s taking a stand against ROM sites. After securing a win against two major ROM distributors, Nintendo has set its sights on another website called RomUniverse. Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the owner of RomUniverse seeking millions of dollars in damages and demanding that the site shut down.

According to the legal filing, RomUniverse is one of the largest unauthorized distributors of Nintendo games. It also seems to be a particularly brazen enterprise, featuring a Nintendo-themed background and paid memberships (a one-time $30 fee) that allow users to download as much content as they want. Without the membership, you can only download three items per week. RomUniverse also hosts movies and ebooks, and these are direct downloads. At least torrent sites have the advantage of not storing infringing files on their servers.

Nintendo points to numerous examples of infringing content including ROMs for the current-gen Switch consoleSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce and older systems like the 3DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and NES. Simply having ROM files isn’t illegal, but it’s something of a gray area. You’re probably in the clear if you make backups of games you already own. However, making those ROMs available for download is just asking for trouble, and Nintendo is famously strict about the use of its IP.

The company’s lawsuit seeks $2 million in damages for trademark infringement across the site plus $150,000 per infringing file. That’s where the damages would really stack up. There are thousands of Nintendo ROMs on the site. Just the selection of Switch titles would push the damages into the tens of millions. In addition to damages, Nintendo demands that the website operator shut down the site and transfer ownership to Nintendo.

It has been just over a year since Nintendo filed a lawsuit against LoveROMS.com and LoveRETRO.co, both of which were owned Jacob Mathias. By late 2018, Mathias had agreed to a $12 million settlement with Nintendo. The sites temporarily went offline shortly after Nintendo filed suit, and later became apology pages. They are now completely offline. The fact that RomUniverse is still online and serving pirated games suggests the owner won’t be so quick to surrender. We could be looking at a more drawn-out case.

Samsung’s PlayGalaxy Game Streaming Is Live on the Note 10

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The Galaxy Note 10 got most of the attention at Samsung’s recent Unpacked event, and quite understandably. Samsung also talked about its upcoming PlayGalaxy Link game streaming platform. PlayGalaxy wasn’t available when the Note 10 launched, but it has now started rolling out as a beta. This is your chance to (kind of) play desktop games on your smartphone.

Samsung’s PlayGalaxy Link is similar to Nvidia GameStream — the game renders on your computer. The PlayGalaxy client encodes the video and streams it to your mobile device over the local network or the internet. Your control inputs go back to the PC, allowing you to play the game. It’s like a fancy, low-latency remote desktop.

The get set up, you’ll need the desktop PlayGalaxy Link client, which is only available for Windows 10. You also need a reasonably powerful GPU (at least NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 550), a Core i5 or higher, 8GB of RAM, and a gigabit router. The app strongly suggests having your PC wired to the router rather than connected via Wi-Fi.  The client should detect games on your PC, but it only spotted one for me. You can manually add more by directing it to the EXE files. On the phone side, there’s a PlayGalaxy Link app available in Samsung’s Galaxy Store.

PlayGalaxy Link is still in beta, and it only works on the Note 10 and Note 10+ for the time being, More Samsung phones will get support soon, though. There’s support for wired and Bluetooth game controllers, which make desktop games playable on a phone. If you choose to use the on-screen controls, well, good luck. Even on the gigantic Note 10+, the screen is too small to play a complex game with on-screen buttons effectively.

There’s no additional cost to use PlayGalaxy Link since you already own the games and are running them on your PC. However, don’t expect miracles right now. The app truly earns its beta label right now. The client connects and launches games reliably, but the video lag is substantial from my testing. You’d have little hope of playing a real-time game, but something turn-based might be feasible.

If Samsung can get the kinks worked out, PlayGalaxy Link could be an additional selling point for the company’s high-end phones. It’s tough to get people to drop $1,000 on a phone, and every little bit helps.

Apple Announces New 10.2-inch iPad, Apple Watch Series 5, and More

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Apple’s annual product refresh has just wrapped up, and it was a big one. Apple announced new online services, and updated versions of several mobile devices. We’ve already got a full rundown of the new iPhone 11, but here’s everything else Apple announced including the new iPad, Apple Watch, and more.

The new iPad

Apple’s fall event usually focuses on the iPhone and Apple Watch, but the company also squeezed in a new tablet: the 10.2-inch iPad (above). Surprisingly, this device keeps the physical home button and larger bezels than the current iPad Pro models.

Apple is notoriously bad at providing details and specifications in events, so it’s unclear if the new iPad has a Lightning port, but that seems likely. The device will have a Smart Keyboard case and support for the first-gen Apple Pencil. The new one charges wirelessly on the iPad Pro, so it won’t work with this tablet. Inside, the new iPad has the A10 Fusion chip, which is just a bit less powerful than the A10X Fusion in the iPad Pros.

This device will replace the current 9.7-inch entry-level iPad, which sold for $329. This tablet will cost the same, but education customers can get it for $299. It will sit between the iPad Mini and the iPad Air in Apple’s lineup. It’s also the first iPad made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. You can pre-order the new iPad today, and it will ship at the end of the month.

In addition, Apple announced its redesigned iPadOS (above) will launch on Sept. 30. Original revealed earlier this year, iPadOS will add tons of new features to make Apple’s tablets feel more like a “real” computer. There’s a desktop version of Safari, a more power files app, and better multitasking. iPadOS will launch on the new 10.2-inch iPad, but it will come as an update to all iPads from the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, and fifth-gen iPad or later.

Apple Watch Series 5

Apple might have been late to the wearables game, but the Apple Watch has effectively crushed the competition year after year. The Series 5 has the same measurements as the Series 4, but it adds an always-on display mode. So, you can see the time without lifting your wrist. This is one of the few features that the Apple Watch lacked compared with its competitors.

Apple says the Series 5 watch has the same 18-hour battery life rating as the Series 4, and that’s with always-on mode activated. This substantial battery life improvement is apparently thanks to a new low-temperature polysilicon and oxide display and low-power display driver.

This is also the first time Apple has offered an Apple Watch made from recycled material. You can get the device in recycled aluminum or titanium, in addition to the stainless steel and ceramic options carried over from the Series 5.

The Series 5 starts at $399 for the standard model and $499 for LTE. They go on sale Sept. 20. The Series 3 will stick around at a lower $199 price, and the Series 4 is going away.

TV and games

Everyone seems to be launching their own streaming service lately, and Apple is no different. Today’s event also included the final launch details for the company’s Apple+ streaming video platform. It’s launching on November 1st for just $4.99 per month.

Apple TV+ focuses on original content like Jason Moma’s See and Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston’s The Morning Show. The catch, however, is that you’ll need an Apple device like the Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or a Mac at launch. The Apple TV+ app will come later to Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and others. If you buy a new Apple device, it will come with a year trial of Apple TV+ as well.

The event also included more information about Apple’s iOS game subscription service, known as Apple Arcade. The service launches on Sept. 19 worldwide and includes more than 100 games, all of them exclusive to iOS. It too will run you $4.99 per month. There will be no ads, and you can share a subscription with up to six family members.

Through crowdsourcing, Cerberus Interactive wants to take location based gaming to the masses – gpgmail

Sami Khan began his work in the startup world by marketing mobile-based investment services like Acorns.

Now the marketer who helped grow that business to a nearly $1 billion valuation is turning his attention to location based gaming in the hopes that he can take on leading contender, Niantic, with a faster, more flexible, and fan driven approach to game development with his new startup, Cerberus Interactive.

Khan’s pitch is that he’s taking the skills he’d honed building up services like Acorns or the browser extension for bargain hunters, Honey, to game development to make games more viral from their inception.

The biggest thing is how do you de-risk what is perceived as a hit driven industry?” Khan asks. “Games are closer to digital apps than back in the days of the console and companies should ship it like an ecommerce concept… If adoption of the game is going to be the decision factor of whether a game fails or succeeds…why isn’t the adoption fo the game tested before the title is built or while the game is being conceived?”

So for his first foray into gaming, Khan is combining a crowd-sourced approach to the development of the game and applying it to what many people think is gaming’s next big frontier —  the location based game phenomenon that hit its stride with Niantic’s Pokemon GO.

Right now in location based games you have the behemoth which is Niantic,” says Khan. “Right now the gaming industry looks at location based games as its own sub genre. But when we look at location based games, we believe that location based games have an aspect that it is a game mechanic within other games.”

The first game that Cerberus is developing is a base building simulator akin to a title like “Age of Empires” but based on real-world locations. “Simulation games or casual games with location built in will have a bonus or an advantage over the stationary games that we play today,” says Khan.

The “Atlas Empires” title that Cerberus is currently developing is being made in concert with the gamers who might want to play it. So far, an undisclosed number of customers are already paying to have a say in certain aspects of the game’s development — kind of like a premiere tier within a crowdfunding campaign.

Khan, a New Orleans native who splits his time between Los Angeles and Austin, has enlisted some marquee investors in his bid to challenge both the traditional ways in which games have been developed and the current industry leader.

Strategic investor MobilityWare has signed on to back the company along with individual investors like Steve Huffman, the co-founder and chief executive of Reddit, and Blake Chandler, the chief business officer of the runaway social network hit, TikTok.

Khan traces his love of games to his time visiting his cousins in Bangladesh and playing “Prince of Persia” on an early Toshiba laptop. “I remember sitting around the computer, watching my oldest cousin play because my dad didn’t want any of the kids touching the laptop,” Khan says.

So far the beta version of “Atlas Empires” has had 50,000 downloads and has about 1,000 daily players, Khan says. The commercial version of the game is expected to go live in the first quarter of 2020, says Khan.

It Looks Like Sega Nailed the Genesis Mini

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo hit on a winning formula when it launched the NES Classic in 2016. Gamers clamored to get their hands on this plug-and-play gateway to gaming history. The SNES Classic followed, and then Sony tried its hand at mini consoles with the disappointing Playstation Classic. Sega’s effort has taken longer, but it’s almost ready for release, and it’s shaping up better than the PlayStation. Early reviews are universally positive — perhaps even more so than they were for the NES Classic.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce

The Genesis Mini, known as the Mega Drive Mini outside the US, uses the familiar mini console formula. It looks like a shrunken-down version of the 90s hardware. Instead of plugging game cartridges into the Genesis Mini, it has 42 classic games preloaded on the internal storage. That’s twice as many included games as other miniature game consoles. It also comes with two retro-style Sega controllers (the three-button version), so you can do multiplayer without any additional purchases.

This is not the first retro Sega console. In fact, there have been many attempts to capitalize on the Genesis game library over the years, probably because Sega dropped out of the console market nearly 20 years ago. These devices usually suffered from a mediocre game selection, poor emulation performance, or both. The Genesis Mini software comes from a developer called M2, which specializes in emulation. The results, by all accounts, are superb. Playing on the Genesis Mini feels like playing games on the original hardware. It connects to your TV via HDMI, and you can choose between original 4:3 and 16:9 ratios. There’s even the option to add in CRT-style scanlines.

Sega didn’t skimp on the game selection for the Genesis Mini. It’s got all the hits, as well as some lesser-known classics. There’s Sonic the Hedgehog, of course, but also Golden Axe, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Altered Beast, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Streets of Rage 2, Earthworm Jim, and many more. It even includes Darius and Tetris, two games that never launched on the Genesis in the US. That’s not as cool as the unreleased Star Fox 2 debuting on the SNES Classic, but it’s still a nice bonus.

The Sega Genesis Mini is available for pre-order via Amazon, Best Buy, and more. It launches on September 19th. It’ll run you $79.99, the same price as the NES Classic at launch. There’s an officially licensed 6-button version of the controller also available for another $20.

Parallels 15 Boosts PC Game Performance on Macs With DirectX 11

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Despite all of Apple’s success over the last few decades, the Windows software ecosystem is undeniably larger. That’s particularly true if you’re a gamer. Many AAA titles never launch on Mac, and those that do often arrive late. Parallels just announced a new version of its Mac software that makes gaming performance better, so you might not have to wait for a buggy Mac port.

Until the early 2000s, using a Mac meant locking yourself away from the Windows software ecosystem. Apple’s PowerPC architecture ensured that any emulation or virtualization would be slow as molasses. Then, Apple switched to the Intel x86 architecture in 2006, and Parallels was ready a few months later with its Windows virtualization suite for OS X (as it was known at the time). Parallels lets you run Windows applications on macOS side-by-side with Mac apps, and the new v15 release marks the first major update in a few years.

In the latest build, Parallels Desktop 15 adds DirectX 11 support inside Windows applications and games. That’s thanks to the use of Apple Metal, a low-overhead 3D graphics API used on all Apple platforms. Parallels says the new version of its software can render 3D graphics 15 percent faster when they implement DX 11. Past versions of Parallels were a bit too sluggish for 3D games, but the promo video (below) shows the software running Overwatch reasonably well. You’d probably have to keep the graphics settings modest, but it’s better than not playing at all.

Parallels 15 includes support for the new Sidecar feature coming to macOS Catalina. With Sidecar, you can use an iPad as a secondary display on your Mac. Therefore, you will soon be able to run Windows programs (an even games) seamlessly on your iPad. You’ll just need a Mac computer nearby.

Parallels also claims the new version is 80 percent faster when opening Microsoft Office apps, and it works with many non-gaming applications the rely on 3D rendering like Autodesk 3ds Max. There’s also support for sharing files between the Mac and Windows sides in apps like Windows Mail, Safari, Photos, and other macOS apps.

Parallels desktop is available as a one-time purchase for $99.99, but some of the features are locked behind the Pro and Business subscription. That’s $99 per year. If you have an older version of Parallels, you’ll need to buy the new version, but the upgrade price is a bit more reasonable at $49.99.

Google Is Testing ‘Play Pass’ App and Game Subscription on Android

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Google seems to be planning an answer to the upcoming Apple Arcade service, which the iPhone maker will launch later this year. The so-called “Google Play Pass” has appeared in the Play Store for a small number of users. The service offers a selection of premium apps and games with no ads or in-app purchases for one monthly fee, but it’s unclear when or if Google will actually launch the service.

The first hint of an app subscription appeared last year on XDA when the site found mention of Play Pass in a new version of the Play Store. The company didn’t have anything to say at the time, but now Play Pass is appearing on phones. This time, Google has confirmed that it is testing an app and game subscription feature.

Apple Arcade, as the name implies, features games from developers like Konami, Lego, and Sega. Apple is leaning heavily on exclusive titles to push Arcade, but Google’s angle is to offer more than games. Play Pass will feature games like Stardew Valley and Marvel Pinball. No apps are included in the initial test, so we’re not sure exactly what Google is thinking. Although, the Play Pass subscription screen mentions premium music streaming and fitness trackers will be among the free apps. Google promises “hundreds” of apps and games as part of the service.

The test includes a 10-day free trial to the service, after which Play Pass costs $4.99 per month. Of course, Google could modify the cost before officially announcing the service. Subscribers get unlimited access to all the premium apps and games offered under Play Pass, and they won’t see any ads in the content, either. Apps and games that contain in-app purchases will have all of them unlocked. However, Play Pass probably won’t work well with many free-to-play mobile games. Unlocking all those in-app purchases would break experiences built around “pay-to-win” mechanics — you’d instantly win with unlimited crystals, gold, or whatever the premium currency might be.

Google might choose to announce Play Pass at its yearly October event, but it could just as easily launch it with a blog post. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Play Pass make some sort of appearance at the October event, possibly as a bundled feature in the new Pixel phones. Google already offers free Photos storage on Pixel phones. Why not some free apps to sweeten the deal?

You Can Now Play the Original Diablo in a Web Browser

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

The next time you’ve got a few minutes to kill, you might be able to spend it playing the original Diable. No, you don’t have to haul around a computer to play the recently re-released version from GOG. All you need is a web browser and a decent internet connection. You don’t even need to own a copy of the game to have some fun, but it’ll be even more fun if you do.

Blizzard released Diablo in 1996, and it was a massive hit among those with computers powerful enough to play it. Players needed a Pentium III 1.2GHz or Athlon XP+ 1500, a 128GB video card with DirectX 8 support, and 32MB of system RAM. The PC gameSEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce took up a whopping 500MB of storage space, too. Basically, it required some power. Now, it’ll run on a potato as long as the potato has a modern web browser.

You can thank the developers at Rivsoft for this new way to play Diablo. Rivsoft specializes in Blizzard-oriented software projects like the Diablo 3 Character Planner and Dota Replay Manager. Going to the Diablo landing page on Rivsoft’s site boots up the original game, and there’s nothing illegal about it!

Like the newer Diablo games, the original is an isometric top-down dungeon crawler with multiple character classes, tons of loot, and hoards demons to fight. The version of Diablo on Rivsoft’s site is the Shareware build — in modern times, we’d call this a demo. You can play the first two dungeons of the game with one of the game’s three character classes.

Diablo-Screenshot

So, that’s plenty of fun for a web browser, but it’s even better if you have a copy of Diablo. Find the DIABDAT.MPQ file in your game directory (either on a disc or a digital version like the one on GOG). Drag that file into the Diablo window, and the full game unlocks. Ah, the joys of Shareware.

The only catch is that all the attention has made Rivsoft’s site extremely unreliable. You might need to wait a few days for the traffic to taper off before the game is actually playable. In the meantime, you can get a regular copy of Diablo on GOG for $10. That includes the classic game you can play on Rivsoft, as well as a remastered game that scales properly on modern PCs.

Nintendo Switch Lite Now Available for Pre-Order on Amazon

This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Terms of use.

Nintendo’s cheaper switch has been rumored for months, and the gaming powerhouse finally took the wraps off the device a few weeks ago. The Switch Lite trims $100 off the Switch’s price tag and loses a few features. Still, the Switch Lite is expected to sell like hotcakes, and you can secure a unit right now. Amazon has pre-orders live for all Switch Lite variants, including the limited edition Pokémon version.

The Switch Lite has most of the features that made the Switch a massive success. It runs all the same games as the original Switch. The biggest difference is the lack of removable Joy-Cons. Instead, the Switch Lite is a single piece of hardware with controllers built into the body. So, some games that integrate motion controls will play a bit differently on the Switch Lite. It should play those games the same otherwise — the Lite has the same Tegra X1 chip as the more expensive Switch.

The display is slightly smaller LCD at 5.5-inches versus 6.2 on the old Switch. However, Nintendo has made the screen bezel match the body color of the Switch Lite, and it comes in some fun shades — all of them are available for pre-order on Amazon. There’s an understated gray if that’s your speed. There are also turquoise and yellow variants. Finally, there’s the light gray special edition for Pokémon: Sword and Shield. It has blue and pink controls and sketches of the new mascot Pokémon from the game.

Amazon also offers bundles of all those colors with microSD cards. That’s a must-have for all Switch owners as the console itself has just 32GB of storage. Most new games are available as cartridges as well as on the eShop, and it’s easier to grab things from the shop.

All four versions of the Switch Lite are $199.99.SEEAMAZON_ET_135 See Amazon ET commerce The gray, turquoise, and yellow consoles launch on September 8th. The Pokémon version comes out on November 8th. Keep in mind, the new Switch Lite doesn’t support docked mode. So, any accessories you might have for docking an original Switch will go unused if you decide to get the handheld-only Lite.
