Telstra stops offering 100Mbps services for NBN FTTN/B/C users – Telco/ISP- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Telstra has stopped offering 100Mbps services to users in NBN Co’s fibre-to-the-node, curb and basement footprints.
The cease of sale, which was first reported by CommsDay, means that users of FTTN, FTTB and FTTC can only sign up to a maximum 50Mbps plan when connecting through Telstra.
“We have made a decision to only offer premium speed (NBN100) on FTTP [fibre-to-the-premises] and HFC [hybrid fibre coaxial] for the time being,” a Telstra spokesperson confirmed to iTnews.
“The reason for this is because a number of our customers on FTTN/B/C do not have connections that are capable of achieving 100Mbps.
“It is often the case that customers that sign up to these plans will be subsequently notified that they cannot achieve top speed and end up downgrading to a lower plan or leaving.”
The spokesperson indicated that there was more to the cease sale but would not disclose where the telco’s thinking is.
“We want to ensure these customers have the best possible experience when connected to our plans and hope to have some news soon,” the spokesperson said.
For now, users hoping to sign up with Telstra would be offered a maximum of 50Mbps speeds.
The cease sale is likely to be a major embarrassment for NBN Co, but more so for the Coalition government which pushed for copper-based services to be used in the NBN rollout.
Retail service providers have previously been fined by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for signing FTTN/B/C users up to plans that their lines are incapable of achieving.
This has led RSPs to sign FTTN/B/C users up to low-tier plans and offer upgrades later only when they can be certain of what the line can do.
However, in Telstra’s case, FTTN/B/C users can only upgrade to a maximum of 50Mbps, and cannot get speeds beyond that, even if their lines can go faster.
Up to 75 percent of such FTTN/B/C users never see the topline speed of their plans.
NBN Co has maintained this may not be an issue, since the user may be willing to pay for a 100Mbps service to get greater than 50Mbps speeds. However, that only works when RSPs offer it as an option.

Tesla Might Plan To Raise $2 Bn In Stock Offering – Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Read Article

According to Reuters, Tesla Inc had made an about-turn on Thursday, while announcing its plans to raise $2 billion in a stock offering. This is when the electric car maker taps into an astronomical jump in its share price in the past months.
CEO Elon Musk assured investors repeatedly that Tesla would not need to raise money. Last month, Musk had said that it does’nt really make sense to raise money. He even said that diluting the company to pay down debt doesn’t sound like a wise move. Tesla said that it would offer 2.65 million shares, out of which, Musk would buy up to $10 million in shares. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, would purchase $1 million Tesla shares.
Tesla shares had fallen almost 7 percent, in premarket trading that had tripled since October, when the company had posted a rare quarterly profit. Talking of the market capitalisation, it’s now worth more than the combined value of General Motors and Ford Motor.

Amazon partners with India’s Future Retail to boost omnichannel offering in the country- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Amazon has partnered with one of India’s largest retailers Future Retail (FRL), to link online and offline shopping for Indian consumers.
India has become a battleground for retailers and media businesses alike, creating a highly competitive landscape for e-commerce and online streaming. With both of these areas being Amazon’s global focus, the company has been making investments in the country for some time.
The latest sees it partnering with Future Retail, a business that owns over 1,500 stores across 400 Indian cities, giving Amazon an offline leg-up compared to some of its rivals.
Amit Agarwal, senior vice president and country head, Amazon India, said: “We are excited about the business collaboration with FRL. FRL’s national footprint of stores offering thousands of products across fashion, appliances, home, kitchen and grocery will now be available to millions of customers shopping on Amazon.in, in hours across 25+ cities.”
The deal will mean that people shopping for FRL items on Amazon will now be able to pick up the goods in person from the stores.
Kishore Biyani, chairman and managing director, Future Retail Limited, said, “Amazon and Future Retail share common values of serving customers everywhere in the best possible manner. This arrangement will allow us to build upon each other’s strengths in the physical and digital space so that customers benefit from the best services, products, assortment and price.”
According to Statista, Indian e-commerce revenues reached $11.1bn in 2019 but is projected to reach $24.5bn by 2024. The potential growth is why Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart are competing to gain the lead in market share in the country.

Bux launches ‘BUX Zero’ to begin offering fee-free trading in Netherlands – gpgmail

Bux, the Amsterdam-based fintech that wants to make investing more accessible, is launching its fee-free trading app today.

Dubbed “BUX Zero,” the new offering is available first to users in the Netherlands who previously signed up to the wait-list. Further European launches are to follow, with Germany and Austria up next.

The BUX Zero app promises to demystify investing in public markets for people who perhaps haven’t done so before, and also make it cheaper.

“It will offer a unique combination of a simplified investing experience along with a vibrant community where they can follow, learn from fellow investors and explore new investing opportunities,” Nick Bortot, CEO and founder of Bux, told gpgmail in June.

In addition, the idea is by removing fees it makes investing small sums more viable — a high fee per buy/sell can make it prohibitively expensive to do so.

At launch, both market orders and limit orders are commission-free until the end of this year, after which Bux will charge €1 and €2 per order, respectively.

A “market order” executes as quickly as possible at the market price, and a “limit order” sets the maximum/minimum price you are willing to buy or sell.

Once the special offer ends, BUX Zero will also introduce a third order type called a “basic order”, which will be commission-free “forever” and is executed at a fixed time, once per day.

A subscription plan is also being tested. This will give BUX Zero users the option of paying a fixed monthly fee to get access to unlimited commission-free market, limit and basic orders. “The subscription fee will be lower than the commission of a single transaction at a traditional online broker,” says Bux.

All of this is made possible because, like a number of competitors, such as Freetrade, Bux recently brought its brokering in-house.

Bortot has previously said this gives the company control over “the full value chain,” including a full brokerage license, back-end technology and operation — and, of course, lowers overheads per trade.

It’s a similar argument made by challenger banks that have built out their own banking stack.

Facebook is making its own deepfakes and offering prizes for detecting them – gpgmail

Image and video manipulation powered by deep learning, or so-called “deepfakes,” represent a strange and horrifying facet of a promising new field. If we’re going to crack down on these creepy creations, we’ll need to fight fire with fire; Facebook, Microsoft, and many others are banding together to help make machine learning capable of detecting deepfakes — and they want you to help.

Though the phenomenon is still new, we are nevertheless in an arms race where the methods of detection vie with the methods of creation. Ever more convincing fakes appear regularly, and though while they are frequently benign, the possibility of having your face flawlessly grafted into a compromising position is very much there — and many a celebrity has already had it done to them.

Facebook, as part of a coalition with Microsoft, the Partnership for AI, and several universities including Oxford, Berkeley, and MIT, is working to empower the side of good with better detection techniques.

“The most interesting advances in AI have happened when there’s a clear benchmark on a dataset to write papers against,” said Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer in a media call yesterday. The dataset for object recognition might be millions of images of ordinary objects, while the dataset for voice transcription would be hours of different kinds of speech. But there’s no such set for deepfakes.

We talked about this challenge at our Robotics and AI event earlier this year in what I thought was a very interesting discussion:

Fortunately Facebook is planning on dedicating around $10 million in resources to make this Deepfake Detection Challenge happen.

“Creation of these datasets can be challenging, because you want to make sure that everyone participating in it is clear and gives consent so they aren’t surprised by the usage of it,” Schroepfer continued. And since most deepfakes are made without any consent whatsoever, they’re not really permissible for usage in an academic context.

So Facebook and its partners are making the deepfake content out of whole cloth, he said. “You want a dataset of source video, and then a dataset of personalities you can map onto that. Then we’re spending engineering time implementing the latest most advanced deepfake techniques to generate altered videos as part of the dataset.”

And while you’re entirely justified in wondering, no, they aren’t using Facebook data to do this. They’ve got paid actors.

This dataset will be provided to interested parties, who will be able to build solutions and test them, putting the results on a leaderboard. At some point there will be cash prizes given out, though the details are a ways off. With luck this will spur serious competition among academics and researchers.

“We need the full involvement of the research community in an open environment to develop methods and systems that can detect and mitigate the ill-effects of manipulated multimedia,” said the University of Maryland’s Rama Chellappa in a news release. “By making available a large corpus of genuine and manipulated media, the proposed challenge will excite and enable the research community to collectively address this looming crisis.”

Initial tests of the dataset are planned for the International Conference on Computer Vision in October, with the full launch happening at NeurIPS in December.

We Company reportedly mulls slashing its valuation ahead of its initial public offering – gpgmail

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company formerly known as WeWork is considering slashing its valuation as it looks to woo public market investors.

The company is reportedly considering a valuation of somewhere in the $20 billion range for its initial public offering, a figure that’s far less than the $47 billion valuation it received when it raised its last round of private funding.

Since filing for its initial public offering earlier this summer, questions have swirled around the viability of The We Company (as it’s now known).

According to the Journal, the company’s chief executive officer and co-founder Adam Neumann flew to Tokyo last week to meet with SoftBank Group — one of the company’s largest investors.

Neumann went to see if SoftBank would make another investment into the company — reportedly coming in as an anchor investor for the public offering and taking a big bite of the $3 billion to $4 billion the company was looking to raise. Neumann also reportedly discussed using SoftBank cash to delay the public offering until 2020.

A few billion here and a few billion there, and soon you’re talking about real money.

SoftBank has already balked at putting more cash into the We Company ahead of the public offering, and it’s not clear whether the company will step in as a white knight now.

What is clear is that We needs money and its long term viability as a business is contingent on the infusion of massive amounts of cash.

Indeed, the company has a $6 billion line of credit at stake, which would be pulled if the public offering underperforms.

If the company fails to hit the $3 billion mark in its public offering, then the credit line promised from the big banks that are underwriting the public offering goes away.  That would be a pretty devastating turn of events for a company that’s currently racking up losses in the billions of dollars.

All of this comes during a shuffling of deck chairs designed to make the company look somewhat better to institutional investors and the public. Stories like this, however, don’t instill confidence that the We Company can avoid the iceberg that is its own business model.

Duolingo is now offering a beta version of Latin courses – gpgmail

Duolingo is one of the most popular apps on the market for folks who want to learn languages. And now, the service is giving users a way to truly ‘carpe diem’ by offering a course in Latin.

If you’re wondering why Duolingo is offering lessons for a language that hasn’t been commonly used since the 8th Century, that’s totally fair. Here’s the scoop: Latin is the backbone for a variety of romance languages, as well as the language of origin for plenty of words across a number of languages, including English.

Studying Latin gives folks a way to study the infrastructure of a handful of other languages.

Moreover, there are plenty of historians, linguists, and professors who wish to read works like The Aeneid by Virgil or Metamorphoses by Ovid or Meditations by Marcus Aurelius in their original Latin form.

Duolingo uses mini-games to help users learn languages. Mini-courses reward users for finishing a course and take away ‘a life’ (like a videogame) when users make a mistake. The company hopes that the end result of a user finishing a course is that they’re able to read, write, speak and comprehend that language.

Moreover, Duolingo has troves of data around how people actually learn languages, and uses machine learning to tweak and improve its service based on that data.

Duolingo has raised more than $100 million across five rounds of funding since it launched in 2011, according to Crunchbase.

Coursera makes its first acquisition, Rhyme Softworks, to power new Coursera Labs offering – gpgmail

Coursera, the online education platform now valued at over $1 billion, has made its name through its popular e-learning programs, working with some 190 universities and big names like Google to bring some 3,600 courses and 14 degrees online, attracting 43 million learners to date. Now, it’s taking a significant step in its development.

First, Coursera has made its first-ever acquisition, of a startup called Rhyme Softworks, which has built a platform that lets developers build hands-on, virtual e-learning projects that can be executed from a user’s internet browser. And along with that, Coursera is launching a new offering called Coursera Labs, which will let educational institutions and industry partners (and eventually enterprises) build their own hands-on learning projects, powered in part by the Rhyme technology.

The deal and the Labs product have been in the works for a while before today, and so some partners have already started to build projects around the offering, like this project from the University of London called Sleuth, to help teach programming skills:

The terms of the deal to acquire Rhyme are not being disclosed — and it’s not clear who its investors were, as Crunchbase lists only a pre-seed round for the startup. But Jeff Maggioncalda, the CEO of Coursera, said that it includes not just Rhyme’s IP and related assets, but its team of six, who will now form the basis of a new R&D office for the company out of Sofia, Bulgaria led by Rhyme’s co-founder and CEO, Namit Yadav. Coursera will also be investing millions in the company’s technology as part of its Coursera Labs initiative.

The idea behind developing Coursera Labs is to bring more flexibility as well as customization into the Coursera platform. Aimed at courses that have strong project and development components to them such as programming, math, or perhaps marketing projects — but not, for example, necessarily a course on 20th century history or Japanese literature — the idea is to bring in more of the tools that have become standard in those disciplines as they are taught elsewhere, and as they are used elsewhere (such as in job applications). Tools that are supported to Labs projects include Jupyter Notebook, RStudio, VS Code, cloud software consoles, and native desktop applications, the company said. Educators building courses can use templates from these or create custom courses for their needs.

The new initiative to offer Labs signals an interesting shift for Coursera in another regard: it will be the first time that the company will have a significant amount of content that will require a person to be “online” in order to use it, a change from previously, when leaners could take work offline to do it. Maggioncalda said however that bandwidth is not an issue — very little of it is required — which will be key considering the growth that Coursera has seen in many emerging markets outside of its home base of the US.

What the change could mean is interesting: Coursera will be able to offer more analytics now to course creators  (and to learners) about how long projects take to complete, what questions give people more pause, and more. It will also give those building online courses a new window into making content specifically for the Coursera platform, rather than work that was originally built for consumption in the class being translated into the Coursera (or indeed more generally e-learning) environment. Important to note, though, that Coursera Labs will be one part of a wider toolkit: there will still be a lot of Coursera courses that do not use it, and do not really need to.

Maggioncalda hinted that there will be another chapter coming in how Labs and Coursera will be developing later in the year that could see the initiative scaling up even more. That could in part be down to extending Labs to Coursera Enterprise users, which is a newer area for the company that provides training for knowledge workers and now has 2,000 customers, Maggioncalda said.
