Facebook and Sony are skipping the Game Developers Conference due to coronavirus concerns – Blog – 10 minute

What just happened? The coronavirus continues to disrupt the best-laid plans of conference organizers worldwide. After prompting coordinators to call off the smartphone industry’s largest trade show last week, the global health hazard is now rattling other tech sectors.
Both Facebook and Sony have confirmed that they won’t be attending the Game Developers Conference due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
Facebook said it will not have a physical footprint at the show and advised all employees to refrain from travel during the show. The company said it will replace in-person sessions scheduled for GDC with videos and announcements posted on the Facebook Gaming developer website.
Sony Interactive Entertainment echoed similar sentiments. In a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony said they felt canceling their participation in the conference was the best option as the situation related to the coronavirus and global travel restrictions are changing daily.
Sony earlier this week also canceled its participation in PAX East.

GDC organizers on Thursday addressed the matter publicly. As of writing, the event will go on as scheduled albeit with enhanced on-site measures. Organizers said the Department of Health for both California and San Francisco support the convening of public events.
In related news, both AT&T and IBM have pulled out of next week’s security-minded RSA Conference. As of Friday, around 500 people have canceled their plans to attend the trade show.
The Game Developers Conference is scheduled for March 16 through the 20th in San Francisco, California.

Barracuda, a trusted partner and leading provider of cloud-enabled security solutions, today released key findings from a report titled ‘Future shock: the cloud is the new network’. Commissioned by Barracuda, the research surveyed APAC, EMEA and US based IT decision makers to capture their experiences with and attitudes about moving infrastructure to the public cloud, concerns restricting adoption, and the security and networking solutions being implemented to overcome them.
The survey includes individual contributors, and team managers with responsibility for or knowledge of their organization’s cloud infrastructure. They came from organizations of all sizes and across a broad range of sectors.
Overall, the study indicates that while adoption rates for public cloud continue to grow, security is still the number one roadblock, which is understandable considering the volume and variety of threats organizations face today.
Highlights from the report include:
Organizations are moving infrastructure to public cloud

On average, organizations currently have 57% of IT infrastructure running in the public cloud
Respondents expect to see an estimated 74% of IT infrastructure running in the public cloud in five years, while APAC Organizations currently are at 46% and expect an estimate of 73%

Security is the No. 1 concern restricting faster adoption of public cloud.

84% of respondents say security concerns restrict their organization’s adoption of public cloud
Security concerns include the security of public cloud infrastructure, the impact of cyber-attacks, and the security of applications deployed in public cloud

Integrations/network is the No. 2 concern with public cloud adoption.

Concerns include integrating public cloud with legacy technologies, better integration with private cloud, and enhanced integration with on-premises infrastructure

Secure software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) fully integrated into public cloud is the solution of choice

38% of respondents have already deployed SD-WAN, with another 41% either in the process of deploying or expecting to deploy within the next 12 months
SD-WAN is being used by more than half of those who have added security to their public cloud
In APAC region only 26% have deployed SD-WAN and 34% are in the process of deploying SD-WAN

As more IT infrastructure moves to public cloud, cloud providers will offer more native network capabilities, and public cloud will expand to include more network functionality. The vast majority of organizations need their security vendors to offer advanced security and cloud connectivity tightly integrated with the major cloud platforms.

Facebook expresses censorship concerns after blocking Singapore users’ access to fake news page- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Facebook has blocked Singapore-based users access to the page of the State Times’ Review (STR) on the orders of the Singapore government.
STR has been accused on multiple occasions by the government of perpetuating fake news and misinformation. It had been served three correction directions by the government under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA), but failed to heed any.
The latest correction notice was served after STR posted an article containing claims about the coronavirus (Covid-19) situation that was deemed “entirely untrue” according to the government.
The Covid-19 crisis has hit a high level of concern globally, and has now infected 75,151 people and claimed the lives of 2,007 people across 29 territories at the time of writing.
However, after STR failed to heed the notice, it was designated as a Declared Online Location (DOL) by POFMA. A DOL is defined by the POFMA Office as “online locations that have carried three or more different online falsehoods that are the subject of active directions issued by POFMA Office”.
DOLs are required to carry a notice warning readers to “exercise caution and do additional fact-checking” when accessing the sites for information.
However, the STR refused to carry the required DOL notice and instead said it was shutting down to meet the Government’s compliance requirements, with The Real Singapore taking over its Facebook page and website. Its Facebook page name was changed to @THEREALSINGAPORE.
Following this, the minister for communications and information S Iswaran then directed the POFMA Office to order Facebook to block Singapore users from accessing STR’s page.
Facebook complied as it said it was “legally compelled” to carry out the order. However, the social network told Channel NewsAsia it believed “orders like this are disproportionate” and “contradict the Singapore government’s claim that POFMA would not be used as a censorship tool”.
“We’ve repeatedly highlighted this law’s potential for overreach and we’re deeply concerned about the precedent this sets for the stifling of freedom of expression in Singapore,” said a Facebook spokesperson.
Tempemail previously looked at why misinformation is a clear and present danger during the coronavirus outbreak.

Concerns over safety at Amazon warehouses as accident reports rise | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

More than 600 Amazon workers have been seriously injured or narrowly escaped an accident in the past three years, prompting calls for a parliamentary inquiry into safety at the online retailer’s vast UK warehouses.
Amazon, whose largest shareholder is the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos, recently launched an advertising campaign fronted by contented staff members, after a string of embarrassing revelations about working conditions.
But new figures obtained by the GMB trade union under the Freedom of Information Act suggest safety at its more than 50 UK warehouses has not improved, and may be worsening.
Local authorities have received 622 accident reports involving Amazon warehouses over the past three years. The annual total has risen from 152 in 2016-17 to 230 the following year and 240 last year.
In one case, a self-employed contractor at a London warehouse lost consciousness and appeared to stop breathing following a head injury, having attempted to restart work.
The accident investigation report found that sorting baskets had been overfilled and that “the main root cause of this incident was failing to provide a safe working environment”.
A report covering an incident in 2015, before the period covered by the figures, concluded that a lapse of concentration due to “long working hours” was behind an incident in which a forklift truck driver reversed into a steel structure, bringing some of it down.
Internal emails from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) show that the accident was reported by an Amazon worker who would not give their name because they were “worried about getting sacked”.
Lisa Nandy, the MP for Wigan and a Labour leadership contender, called for an investigation into Amazon. She said: “The warehouse injuries suffered by Amazon workers are beyond appalling. I stand ready, if and when Amazon’s workers take strike action and protest, I will be there with them.
“The Tories need to start taking workers’ rights seriously and standing up to businesses like Amazon. I call on an urgent investigation – workers simply cannot wait for their conditions to improve.”
Jack Dromey, MP for Birmingham Erdington, said: “In my 30 years in the world of work I cannot remember any company clock up so many injuries to its workers.
“I have been inside the giant Rugeley depot and heard first-hand from frightened workers of the 77 serious incidents in Rugeley alone.
“Amazon purports to be a 21st century company. It behaves like a 19th century mill-owner. [Its] owner, the American billionaire, Jeff Bezos, should be called to account by parliament for his actions.
“How can he or Amazon justify refusing to talk to their workers’ union, the GMB, on safety? Their behaviour is disgraceful.”
The GMB said the escalation in the number of accidents and near-misses demonstrated the need for parliament to investigate the online retailer.
Mick Rix, GMB national officer, said: “Amazon are spending millions on PR campaigns trying to persuade people its warehouses are great places to work. But the facts are there for all to see – things are getting worse.
“Hundreds of stricken Amazon workers are needing urgent medical attention. Conditions are hellish.
“We’ve tried over and over again to get Amazon to talk to us to try and improve safety for workers. But enough is enough – it’s now time for a full parliamentary inquiry.”
Amazon became the second company in the world to be valued by Wall Street at $1tn, while its founder Jeff Bezos is the world’s richest man with an estimated net worth of $137bn (£104tn).

Sign up to the daily Business Today email or follow Guardian Business on Twitter at @BusinessDesk
But the company has been dogged by allegations that its success is founded on the backs of workers enduring poor safety and low pay, leading to claims that Scottish staff resorted to living in tents to cut commuting costs.
Bezos is paying $165m for a house in the exclusive Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles, according to the Wall Street Journal, more than Amazon is due to pay in US federal taxes in 2019.
An Amazon spokesman said: “Amazon is a safe place to work. Yet again, our critics seem determined to paint a false picture of what it’s like to work for Amazon. They repeat the same sensationalised allegations time and time again.
“Our doors are open to the public, to politicians, and indeed to anyone who truly wants to see the modern, innovate and, most importantly, safe environment we provide to our people. The fact is we benchmark against UK national data, published by the Health & Safety Executive, confirming we have over 40% fewer injuries on average than other transportation and warehousing businesses in the UK.”

Nvidia trims earnings outlook by $100 million over coronavirus concerns – Blog – 10 minute

In brief: Nvidia in its latest earnings report this week said it generated $3.11 billion in revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2020 that ended on January 26. That’s an increase of 41 percent over the $2.21 billion brought in during the same period a year ago and a three percent hike quarter-over-quarter.
Q4 earnings per diluted share were $1.53, up an impressive 66 percent from $0.92 in the year-ago quarter and six percent over the $1.45 in the previous quarter.
Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang cited record data center revenue in the quarter. “Adoption of Nvidia accelerated computing drove excellent results,” he added.
Full-year figures weren’t quite as positive, however, as Nvidia earned just $10.92 billion last year. That’s a seven percent decrease from the $11.72 billion generated a year earlier.

Nvidia, like many others, is already feeling the financial impact of the coronavirus. The company was among several that pulled out of Mobile World Congress 2020 earlier this month. Given the health concerns and the fact that many were already off the docket, event coordinators had no choice but to cancel the conference.
That said, Nvidia reduced its revenue outlook for the coming quarter by $100 million to account for the virus’ potential impact. Now, the company expects revenue of $3.00 billion, plus or minus two percent.

Britain ‘reasonably confident’ of US trade deal despite Huawei concerns – Strategy – Security- Tempemail – Blog – 10 minute

Britain takes US concerns about its use of Huawei equipment seriously but is confident a trade deal with the United States will be among its first after leaving the European Union, its foreign secretary Dominic Raab said on Monday.
US officials have hinted future trade talks could be affected by Britain’s decision last month to grant Huawei a limited role in its 5G mobile network, frustrating a global bid by the United States to exclude the firm from the West’s next-generation communications systems.
“We listened and take the concerns of our American friends very seriously,” Raab said in response to a question about the issue.
“We are reasonably confident that we can do a free trade agreement (with America) in that first wave of post-Brexit trade deals,” Raab added, during a visit to Singapore.
“We have had a good conversation about Huawei and the one thing we all recognise is there has been market failure in terms of high-trust vendors being able to provide telecoms infrastructure.”
Last month, Britain said it would cap at 35 percent the involvement of “high-risk vendors”, such as Huawei, in the non-sensitive parts of its 5G mobile network. Excluding Huawei altogether would have delayed 5G and cost consumers more, it added.
Yet some senior members of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservatives have demanded that Huawei must not have a role, a position described on Sunday as a “kind of witch-hunt” by China’s ambassador to Britain.
Britain is in talks with America, Australia, Canada, and others on future technological innovations that could challenge Huawei’s dominance in the field, Raab said.
“For 5G, the sooner we can build up our pool of high-trust vendors the less reliant we will be on high-risk vendors,” he added.
Raab, who is visiting Asia to seek free trade deals after Brexit, said he also expected Singapore to be in the first wave of post-Brexit trade deals.
He will travel to Malaysia on Tuesday, wrapping up a tour that included Australia and Japan.

Interior Department orders grounding of Chinese drones over national security concerns – Blog – 10 minute

The big picture: After looking into national security concerns about the surveillance potential of drones made in China, the US Interior Department has chosen to ground its fleet and use it only in case of emergency. Interestingly, this isn’t just about Chinese espionage as DOI officials want to assess all possible actors that might represent a threat in this regard.
While the trade tensions between China and the US have eased a bit thanks to new agreements signed by presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, it doesn’t mean there’s less paranoia in town.
Recently, the secretary of the Interior Department has issued a no-fly order for all drones made in China or using parts built in the region, with the sole exception of situations where they are needed to aid rapid response teams, such as for natural disasters and rescue operations.
This is just a step up from what the US Department of the Interior did last year when it grounded its fleet consisting of around 800 drones, mainly because of concerns that they might be sending sensitive information back to China to aid in spying operations. The DOI uses these drones for a number of different tasks like monitoring dams, erosion, endangered species, as well as energy and transportation infrastructure, so this raises the question whether to trust that they aren’t used for espionage by foreign entities.

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said that he came to the recent decision after investigating the potential security risks from drones, so his department will make exceptions for tracking wildfires or saving human lives, as well as training flights.
And while China wasn’t mentioned directly, it is definitely the main target of the order. Bernhardt says “it does not specifically mention Chinese [drones] because we wanted to leave it open in case there are additional foreign-made sources that may be issues.”
Popular drone maker DJI was quick to slam the order as “part of a politically-motivated agenda to reduce market competition and support domestically produced drone technology, regardless of its merits.” The manufacturer argues that such decisions ignores the fact that the industry relies on a global supply chain and that validation tests made by US federal agencies haven’t found any reasons for suspicion.
According to Interior representative Carol Danko, 121 of the DOI’s drones are made by DJI, while the rest use Chinese parts but are made by other manufacturers.
The DOI’s decision adds on top of other governmental bans and restrictions that have been placed on telecom infrastructure equipment from Huawei and surveillance system manufacturer Hikvision. And while DJI’s defensive statements do look similar to Huawei’s, it’s hard to ignore that even if the concerns are warranted, the US hasn’t exactly filled the technological gap with locally-produced drones.
Some speculate this is all part of a “New Cold War,” but the more pressing matter is that those drones present cost and safety advantages over using human-flown helicopters and planes. A former DOI firefighter attests to these benefits, but rising national security concerns seem to trump them anyway.

Apple reports record profits amid concerns over economic impact of coronavirus | Technology – Blog – 10 minute

Sales of the iPhone 11 propelled Apple to all-time record revenues and profits for the final three months of 2019, a strong performance that comes amid concerns over the impact of the coronavirus on the Chinese economy.
Apple’s $91.8bn in quarterly revenue topped analyst expectations thanks to $56bn in iPhone sales. The strong performance marks a rebound for the company, which suffered a rare setback in holiday sales one year ago.
On a call with investors, the chief executive, Tim Cook, faced questions over Apple’s reliance on China, as that country is rocked by the outbreak of the coronavirus. China is both a market for Apple products and a critical part of its supply chain.
“We’re closely following the development of the coronavirus,” Cook said. Apple said it had set a wider than normal guidance range for the next quarter, of $63bn to $67bn, due to what Cook deemed “greater uncertainty” related to the outbreak.
The company has also restricted employee travel to “business critical”, closed one retail store in China, and restricted hours in other stores in order to institute additional precautions, such as deep cleaning and temperature checks for staff.
Cook said that Apple is working on mitigation plans to make up for some suppliers that are based in the Wuhan area, where the outbreak is centered. It will also have to deal with delays in production from suppliers in the rest of China, which will return from the Lunar New Year holiday later than expected due to the outbreak.
Tuesday’s results cover Apple’s first full quarter of iPhone 11 sales, as well as the key holiday shopping season.
Apple has worked over the past year to diversify its revenues and avoid overreliance on the iPhone, but the device remains the foundation of the company’s business, accounting for 60% of revenues.
Earnings per share of $4.99 and net income of $22.3bn also marked all-time records for the company. The stock price jumped 3% in after-hours trading in response to the strong showing.
Among the sectors that Apple is hoping to expand is subscription services. The company’s new streaming service, which it hopes will rival Netflix and Amazon Prime, launched in November. Cook said the service was “off to a rousing start” on a conference call with investors, but did not disclose any specific subscription numbers for the nascent product. Instead, he highlighted award nominations garnered by actors on some of the channel’s shows.
The company recorded 17% growth in revenue from services, to $12.7bn, slightly below analyst expectations.
“This miss could be attributed to the competition from Disney+, which launched at roughly the same time,” said the eMarketer principal analyst Yoram Wurmser.
Wearables have also been an important driver of sales for the company. Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research estimates that Apple sold $6bn worth of the wireless earbuds AirPods in 2019, and projected that number to double in 2020.
Revenues for wearables, home and accessories products grew 37%, to $10bn.
“This product category is now the size of a Fortune 150 company,” Cook said.

Apple’s stock price had an extraordinary year, more than doubling since this time in 2019. That is despite its complicated relationship with the Chinese market in recent years. An economic slowdown dampened demand – forcing the company to issue a profits warning in January 2019 that shocked investors and sent its stock price tumbling. The company has also had to navigate the trade dispute between the US and China, and its reputation suffered in October 2019 when it removed a mapping app that was used by protesters in Hong Kong.

The DOJ may team up with state attorneys general to investigate Google over antitrust concerns – Blog – 10 minute

In context: Google is currently facing down numerous antitrust investigations from federal regulators and a coalition of 48 state attorneys general. However, these separate investigations might soon combine into one giant, legal threat against Google, if upcoming talks between the DOJ and the coalition in question pan out.
For a bit of context, the investigations in question weren’t started over any single potential infraction; they’re a bit more general in nature. The DOJ’s investigation, which was launched in July of 2019, is looking into the possibility that digital platforms (Google included) are not acting in ways that are “responsive to consumer demands” due to their lack of meaningful competition.
Later, in September, the massive state attorneys general investigation began over similar concerns. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the attorneys general and the DOJ are set to meet later this week to discuss the possibility of combining their efforts, or at least sharing knowledge and resources.

Google’s legal team is well-paid and formidable, so such a partnership just might prove necessary if these investigations are to have any chance of success.
Some of the topics expected to be discussed during the meeting include Google’s “dominant position” in the search industry, as well as its “possible” anticompetitive behavior concerning the popular Android mobile operating system.
While it’s unclear whether or not the two sides will indeed team up against Google, we will be following the situation closely moving forward, and we’ll update you if any new information comes to light.
